Camden People First is a user‑led organisation run by and for adults with learning disabilities. We promote independence, equality, and self‑advocacy across the London Borough of Camden. Our work centres on empowering people to speak up, make their own choices, and influence the services and policies that affect their lives.

Role Purpose
To provide high‑quality, person‑centred advocacy for adults with learning disabilities, and neurodivergency in Camden. The Community Advocate helps individuals speak up, be heard, access services, challenge unfair treatment, and participate fully in decisions about their lives. The role also strengthens Camden People First’s presence in the community and supports our self‑advocacy groups.
As a Community Advocate, you will empower people to have a bigger voice, to be heard, and to be actively involved in decisions that affect their lives.
You will support individuals with issues including wellbeing and health, housing needs, accessing services, organising and attending meetings, and ensuring their rights are upheld.
Key Responsibilities
Advocacy & Empowerment
- Support adults with learning disabilities and neurodivergent) to express their views, wishes, and concerns in their own words.
- Provide independent advocacy during meetings, assessments, reviews, and care‑planning processes.
- Support people with a range of communication needs using accessible approaches (signs, symbols, photos, multimedia, etc).
- Help service users understand information and choices using accessible communication (Easy Read, plain English, visuals).
- Encourage and develop self‑advocacy skills so service users can speak up for themselves.
- Manage a caseload of up to 5 active cases at any time.
- Attend meetings and forums alongside service users.
Community Engagement
- Work in partnership with local services, including Camden Council Social Services, health providers, housing teams, and voluntary and community organisations.
- Promote the rights of people with learning disabilities across Camden.
- Support adults with learning disabilities to access community activities, employment, education, and social opportunities.
Casework & Representation
- Manage a caseload of individuals needing one‑to‑one advocacy.
- Attend multi‑agency meetings (such as MASH) to ensure the person’s voice is heard and respected.
- Challenge decisions or practices that undermine an adult with learning disabilities’ rights, wellbeing, or independence.
Safeguarding & Rights Protection
- Identify and report safeguarding concerns in line with Camden People First policies and statutory guidance.
- Promote the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, Care Act, Equality Act, and Human Rights Act and other legislation.
- Ensure all advocacy is independent, confidential, and led by the person.
Administration & Reporting
- Keep accurate case notes, outcome records, and monitoring information.
- Contribute to service evaluation, member feedback, and quality improvement.
- Support the development of accessible information and Easy Read materials.
Internal Relationships
Reports to the Director, with caseload-only supervision by the Volunteer Caseload Supervisor.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Level 4 Independent Advocacy qualification
- Experience working with people with learning disabilities or other vulnerable groups.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including accessible communication methods.
- Understanding of relevant legislation (MCA, Care Act, Equality Act).
- Ability to build trust, maintain boundaries, and work in a user‑led environment.
- Confident in challenging decisions and advocating assertively but respectfully.
- Commitment to co‑production and working alongside self‑advocates.

Main duties of the job
No two days in our team are the same. SHUK is a leading peer support organisation with over 40 years of experience in developing and delivering peer-led services. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities by embedding peer support principles into health and wellbeing initiatives. We have created a range of innovative programmes that help people living with cancer and other long-term health conditions to navigate challenges and take control of their health and wellbeing.
We work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support on projects that make a real difference. These include national and local initiatives for the Deaf community, volunteer-led support for anyone affected by cancer, and prehabilitation services for those facing complex treatment. This position leads the development of policy and campaigns within the country, aligning with Guide Dogs’ strategic objectives. Working collaboratively with the central policy, public affairs, and campaigns team, as well as the country leadership team, the role builds strategic partnerships with government bodies, local authorities, societies, and other key organisations. This ensures Guide Dogs remains informed and influential on all policy initiatives affecting the organisation and its stakeholders.
The post holder will be responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership, management and oversight of a team.
The post-holder is responsible for shaping policy positions, drafting responses to consultations from councils, combined authorities, and devolved governments, and driving impactful campaigns at a regional level. A key focus is increasing the involvement of blind and partially sighted people in advocacy and campaigning.
Additionally, the role leads the implementation of Guide Dogs’ regional marketing and communications strategy across the Devolved Nations. This includes raising brand awareness, engaging diverse audiences—service users, families, volunteers, donors, and the public—and delivering integrated communications plans that strengthen Guide Dogs’ presence and impact.
Key Responsibilities
Policy Development
- Lead the creation of country-specific policy and position papers, ensuring alignment with organisational strategy.

Purpose of the role:
The Energy Advice Coordinator will provide essential advice to people affected by spinal cord injury who are struggling with, or at risk of fuel poverty, helping them to improve their situation while recognising and responding to the unique challenges that spinal cord injury can bring. They will manage a caseload offering practical solutions, whilst developing referral pathways to connect them with relevant services to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their fuel costs.
The role will also lead the development of knowledge and skills across Back Ups’ staff and volunteer teams, developing easy to use resources and an understanding of when and how to escalate cases for more in-depth advice. They will work closely with sector charities and advice organisations to ensure a high quality of seamless support while creating a lasting legacy for people affected by spinal cord injury.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To provide impartial advice to householders on the telephone, at events or online group events.
- Make use of internal and external referral systems to ensure clients’ needs are met;
- Respond to enquiries from the public, local authority staff, private and voluntary sectors or installers and, where appropriate, redirecting them to members of staff or other agencies;
- Maintain quality of advice and information as required
- Work with the wider Back Up team to create resources to support people affected by spinal cord injury, both digitally and physically.
- Work with Back Up’s services team to embed and deliver group based online advice sessions in our support groups and course modules.
- Develop and lead a programme to ensure Back Up’s services staff and volunteers develop a baseline of knowledge that enables them to identify and provide basic information to people affected by spinal cord injury around energy efficiency.
- Conduct thorough assessments of clients' energy needs and identify potential solutions and further sources of support through telephone-based support.
- Provide tailored advice on energy-saving measures and support schemes to the caseload.
- Work collaboratively with local authorities, energy providers, and other relevant organisations to ensure comprehensive support for those in the caseload.
- Educate people affected by spinal cord injury on energy efficiency and ways to reduce their energy consumption.
- Maintain accurate records of all interactions and support provided, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with data protection regulations.
- Support the project manager with the development, delivery, and evaluation of the energy advice project.
- To maintain up to date, working knowledge of sustainable energy matters, affordable warmth, renewable energy, water heating and usage.
- At all times, ensure that advice service and activity are in line with the requirements of the project;
- Effectively utilise existing sources of data to identify suitable opportunities to meet customers’ needs.
- Stay up to date with relevant policies, schemes, and best practices related to fuel poverty and energy efficiency
- To develop and implement partnerships and referral routes that support people affected by spinal cord injury with relevant energy advice.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Essential:
- Minimum of 1 years' experience in a similar role, ideally within Energy Advice or similar area.
