The team is a multi-tasking team that undertakes most Health and Safety tasks in-house, working closely with most other teams within Cats Protection. The team deal with the Cats Protection retail outlets, Cat Centres, accident investigations, DSE, branch volunteer enquiries and more.
What we’re looking for in our Environment & Sustainability Lead:
- An environment and sustainability specialist with strong experience of leading the development and implementation of environmental plans or ESG strategy
- Degree in environment management/sustainability or equivalent professional experience
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders to drive change

About the role

Support the development of Youth Employment UK policy positions, recommendations and messages
Work with Youth Ambassadors and young people to gather insight that informs policy positions, reports and recommendations
Support delivery of our Youth Voice Census by writing up findings for a wide range of audiences
Support Youth Employment UK’s Good Youth Employment Benchmark by conducting employer interviews and writing employer-facing reports.
Support Youth Employment UK’s public affairs activity, including APPG, Connected Communities and other policy forums.
Work closely with the Policy and Research Director, Policy and Research Coordinator and wider team in an agile, fast-paced working environment
About you
We are looking for someone with strong policy judgement, excellent writing skills, professional curiosity and a commitment to improving systems for young people.
You will bring:
Experience in policy, public affairs, research, youth employment, education, skills, employment support, social policy or a related area
Research literacy and confidence working with evidence, data, reports and lived experience insight
Ability to turn complex information into clear briefings, recommendations and practical outputs
Confidence in engaging with a range of stakeholders, such as young people, employers, members, policymakers, charities, NGOs, think tanks or public bodies.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication to a wide range of audiences
A high level of self and project management skill, able to work effectively as part of a team and independently
A clear passion for improving education, employment and transitions outcomes for young people through policy activity.

About this role
This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing Philanthropy Team in a brand-new role that will play a key part in securing transformational funding for Alder Hey Children's Charity.
As Bid Writer, you will lead on the development of compelling, high-quality funding applications to large-scale national grant programmes and, over time, statutory funding bodies. Collaborating across the Charity and the hospital, you will translate complex clinical, research and capital projects into persuasive, evidence-led cases for support that inspire investment in the future of children's healthcare.
This is a varied and rewarding role for someone who enjoys writing, research and building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You'll bring together ideas, evidence and expertise to shape ambitious projects into funder-ready proposals with the potential to make a lasting difference for children and families.
We're looking for an excellent communicator with outstanding writing skills, exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Key responsibilities will include:
Bid Development & Writing
Lead the development and writing of high-quality funding applications to national grant programmes and, over time, statutory funding opportunities.
Produce compelling, tailored funding applications that clearly demonstrate need, impact and outcomes.
Manage a varied pipeline of funding applications, ensuring multiple deadlines are delivered to a consistently high standard.
Research & Opportunity Development
Research and identify new funding opportunities that align with the Charity's strategic priorities.
Develop and maintain a proactive pipeline of opportunities, working closely with colleagues across the Charity.
Collaboration & Project Development
Work with clinicians and charity colleagues to gather information and develop strong funding propositions.
Translate complex clinical and technical information into accessible, engaging and persuasive cases for support.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
Ensure applications meet funder guidance and eligibility criteria
Maintain accurate records of applications and outcomes using the charity CRM.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of bid writing processes, templates and resources across the team.

Additional Information
In April 2025, the charity adopted a four-day working week policy. Staff previously working 37.5 hours now work 30 hours across four days, maintaining full pay while supporting a better work-life balance.
