About Southwark Charities
With a history of over 400 years, Southwark Charities provides affordable housing giving older people the opportunity to live independently in a safe, secure, and supportive environment. We also provide grant funding to a wide range of community organisations and charities working with older people in Southwark. We have a thriving membership programme to help enrich older people’s lives, support their health and well-being and tackle isolation.
Due to our prudent financial management our investments and varied income portfolio yields an annual operating budget of £1.9 million each year. Of this, we distribute around £500,000 in grants, a figure set to increase to approximately £1 million by 2029. In addition, we pay modest annual grants to around 200 individual members and organise a wide range of activities—such as theatre outings, day trips, and community events—for both almshouse residents and our wider membership community.
On completion of our new almshouse we will be providing affordable office space for like-minded organisations.
We are proud of our long history of service to Southwark’s older people and are committed to ensuring our organisation is well positioned to meet future challenges, including property expansion, increased grant-making, and a growing programme of resident and community engagement.
Our organisation currently employs a small but dedicated team of four:
- Clerk/Chief Executive (FT) – due to retire in November 2028.
- Operations Manager (FT) – appointed three years ago to free up the Clerk so they could oversee a major building programme.
- Grants Officer (FT) – currently manages ~£500k in grant giving (expected to rise to ~£1m by 2029) and provides administrative support to another charity.
- Membership Officer (0.8 FTE) – supports and organises activities for ~250 local people.
In the coming years, we face several organisational changes:
- Leadership transition with the retirement of the CEO (2028).
- Expansion of our property portfolio by 30 additional units on completion of a major works project, with the potential of a further site of 18 homes coming into our management and the rental of affordable office space.
- A possible second redevelopment of an existing site
- Growth in our grant-making capacity (from £500k to ~£1m annually).
- Expansion of membership support, resident engagement, and facility management responsibilities.
Objectives
We seek to engage an HR consultant to provide advice and proposals on the following:
- Staffing Structure Review
- Assess the current organisational structure and workforce capacity.
- Review roles and functions through one-to-one interviews for clarity, overlap, and efficiency.
- Benchmark against similar organisations.
- Skills Audit
- Identify current skills, gaps, and training needs across the team.
- Recommend professional development opportunities.
- Future Planning
- Develop short-term (2025–2027) and medium-term (2028 onwards) staffing models.
- Provide options for succession planning, particularly in light of the CEO’s planned departure.
- Advise on HR implications of property & services expansion, increased grant-giving, and membership growth.
- Practical Options & Recommendations
- Present at least 2–3 structural options with cost implications.
- Improvements to HR processes and systems
- Any potential risks, concerns or obstacles and solutions to overcome them
- Suggest phased implementation plans to align with organisational growth.
Deliverables
- Written report with analysis, skills audit results, and recommended structures (short-term and medium-term).
- Presentation to Board/Leadership team to discuss findings and options.

Consultant Profile
We are seeking an HR consultant (or consultancy) with:
- Experience in the non-profit, community housing, or grant-giving sectors, desirable but not essential.
- Demonstrated expertise in workforce planning, succession planning, and organisational design.
- Strong understanding of governance and operational needs of small-to-medium charities.
We would welcome an outline of your approach, proposed fee structure, and relevant experience.

About the role
Reporting to the Director of Fundraising and Campaigns, the Head of Philanthropy and Capital Campaign will lead a high-performing team to deliver significant philanthropic income, with a particular focus on our landmark £50 million ‘Join the Future’ capital campaign to build the Royal Free London Cancer Centre. As Senior Philanthropy Manager, you will be responsible for delivering sector-leading fundraising, sitting at the heart of a successful team to drive relationships and income from some of the UK’s leading philanthropists.

What you’ll do
Since 2019, we have been building a cross-cutting thematic programme using our investor accountability, corporate engagement and public policy toolkit to build a movement to harness the power of the investment system to address commercial determinants of health.
In 2022, we launched Long-term Investors in People’s Health (LIPH), a cross-cutting programme of work leveraging our toolkit of investor accountability, corporate engagement and policy advocacy. It is one of ShareAction’s largest programmes. Since the launch of LIPH, we have run high-profile campaigns to get large food manufacturers and retailers to improve their health disclosures and sell healthier products via our Healthy Markets Initiative (HMI); recently set up a Clean Air Initiative (CAI); mobilised investors to engage with corporates, the UK government, and standard-setting bodies on issues such as clean air and sick leave policies; and partnered with academics to grow the evidence base on the financial materiality of health. We have ambitious plans to take this work forward and are looking for a new Head of the team to help us do so.
In this role, you will:
- Oversee and contribute to the successful implementation of ShareAction’s strategy to tackle poor health via its LIPH programme, a cross-cutting programme of work leveraging our toolkit of investor accountability, corporate engagement and policy advocacy.
- Lead and motivate a team of 10 staff members and directly line manage at least three of them.
- Ensure adequate risk management and Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) processes are in place.
- Together with the Fundraising team and Co-Director of Corporate Engagement, be responsible for securing funding for the LIPH programme, including writing funding bids, supporting with relationship management, supporting the coordination of our Funders’ Governance Group, and helping produce update reports.
- Plan, manage and report on budget for the LIPH programme, delegating workstream and campaign budgets where there are appropriate leads.
- Develop and nurture strategic relationships with senior external stakeholders, including funders, journalists, investors, and civil society organisations.
- Act as one of ShareAction’s subject matter experts on commercial determinants of health, keeping your knowledge up to date with developments across academia, civil society, and public policy.
- Act as a media spokesperson for the team and represent it in internal and external forums.
- Work with peers at the “Head of” level to play a leadership role across ShareAction.
What you’ll bring to the team
Essential
- Passionate about harnessing the power of the financial system to address poor health across the commercial determinants of health.
- Excellent organisation and project management skills, with demonstrable experience leading ambitious programmes of work.
- Great team player with experience of building, managing and leading a high-performing team based on mutual trust, respect and inclusion and providing mentoring support to more junior members of staff.

We have a formal hybrid working policy in place. As Head of the team, we expect that you will work from the office at least every Tuesday if you are based in London and at least two Tuesdays a month if you are based outside of London. The team holds its weekly meetings on Tuesday morning.

Core Purpose:
The Head of Public Fundraising is a pivotal strategic leadership role at Make-A-Wish UK, responsible for the strategic direction, planning, delivery, long-term growth and performance of all public fundraising and supporter engagement activity.
This includes strategic oversight of all public income streams - individual giving (cash, regular giving, lottery, payroll), legacies, in-memory giving, challenge events, community fundraising, owned products, and innovation—as well as operational leadership of the Supporter Care team, which manages supporter care, income processing, data imports, and inbound queries for the whole organisation.
The role leads a multi-disciplinary team of around 20, across four core public fundraising and engagement functions, who are responsible for delivery of a high-performing public fundraising programme and sector-leading supporter care function - acquiring, engaging, and retaining supporters at scale, growing income sustainably and ensuring every interaction reflects Make-A-Wish’s values and drives long-term income growth.
This role contributes to over 50% of the charity’s total fundraised income, plays a critical role in long-term sustainability, and operates at cross-organisationally to embed a supporter-first culture, championing segmentation, stewardship and integrated journeys that drive lifetime value. The role is responsible for delivering significant and growing income targets, developing multi-year investment plans, and influencing organisation-wide strategies to ensure we are equipped to serve a growing supporter base. The postholder is part of the Extended Leadership Team (XLT), reporting to the Director of Income & Engagement, and influences decisions at Board level through strategic investment planning and performance reporting.
Essential Criteria:
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in public fundraising, with a strong track record of income growth across a broad portfolio of income streams (e.g. individual giving, legacies, community, events, innovation, lottery).
- Experience of leading the development and implementation of organisation-wide strategies, and aligning team plans to broader strategic priorities.
- Demonstrable success in a senior leadership role of similar scale and complexity, with full accountability for strategy, delivery, performance and people management across multiple teams and functions.
- Proven experience in designing and delivering large-scale fundraising strategies, investment plans, and innovation pipelines which supports the organisational vision, mission and strategic objectives.
- Significant experience of leading both income-generating and operational functions (e.g. supporter experience or donor services).

- Highly experienced in using different direct marketing techniques across a range of channels including DRTV, DM, F2F, TM and digital marketing, with a proven track record of income growth within a fundraising environment, developed and delivered with a focus on future sustainability.

- Ensure the team adopts a test-and-learn culture grounded in insight, continual improvement and audience understanding.

- Set up and model new income streams from scratch (e.g. lottery and regular giving programmes), with robust 10-year financial investment cases to inform Board-level decisions.

- Oversee the development and delivery of a comprehensive Supporter Care Roadmap, ensuring all inbound supporter touchpoints are high quality, timely, compliant, and aligned with Make-A-Wish’s tone, values, and fundraising activity.
- Provide strategic leadership to the Supporter Care function, ensuring it is fully embedded into the public fundraising model and capable of scaling as supporter volumes grow, including future-facing processes, tech use, and journey mapping.
- Lead strategy on audience journeys and supporter touchpoints, including Make-A-Wish’s Contact Strategy, driving joined-up experiences and consistent messaging.
- Contribute to the overall organisational strategy through Extended Leadership Team (XLT) engagement, ensuring public fundraising is fully integrated. Act as a senior leader within Income & Engagement and across the organisation, contributing to cross-functional strategy and planning.
Operational Delivery
- Oversee the delivery of public fundraising programmes across all channels and products, ensuring alignment to income, supporter volume, and ROI targets.

STRUCTURE AND PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As Deputy Director, Digital Fundraising you will be based in the London office or work remotely and will be part of the Mass Markets Global Support Team. The Deputy Director will play a pivotal role in advancing IRC’s global digital fundraising efforts by providing consultation and hands-on support across paid media, creative development, analytics, and process improvement. Serving as a strategic adviser to country teams, they will guide campaign planning, platform strategy, and performance measurement while handling key relationships with digital agencies and platform partners. They will also support creative process refinement, champion digital ads testing and optimisation, and ensure compliance with data privacy standards. Through thorough analysis and cross-functional collaboration, the role will help refine attribution models, enhance reporting infrastructure, and drive continuous improvement across digital programs. Additionally, the Deputy Director will lead special projects to streamline operations and foster knowledge sharing across the global digital network.
SCOPE AND AUTHORITY

In this role you will provide consultation and guidance on spending decisions about how best to utilise IRC budget on paid digital platforms to maximise income, and responsibility for suggesting, planning and delivering new and engaging ways to introduce prospects to the IRC brand.
Responsibility for Resources:
- Oversee Digital donor acquisition market support and cross market pilots - assessing the market needs and requirements and working with HQ functions to support local market fundraising goals and objectives
- Oversee and assess potential digital acquisition external opportunities available to IRC and advise fundraising markets on implementation.
- Coordination and oversee the work of any and all agencies, freelancers and external consultants required to deliver on the agreed strategic plan.
- Oversee and coordinate cross market testing and channel optimisation activity.
KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- External Relations colleagues globally, including the USA, UK, Sweden, Korea and more.
- Partner teams across Digital Engagement, MarTech, Global Donations Operations, Creative Studio, Analytics and other key support functions.
- Collaborate with the Director of Digital Transformation & AI Enablement to prepare digital programs for AI integration and future-readiness.
- Liaise with marketing agencies, partners and freelancers as needed.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1) Digital Media Consultation & Support— 40%
- Act as subject-matter guide and adviser on paid platforms (Meta, Google, programmatic and others) for digital country teams.
- Guide efforts to translate digital strategy into campaign and audience recommendations, investment levels and bidding strategies, and measurement approaches.
- Work with internal MarTech colleagues and external digital media agencies to ensure operational readiness - to include pixel/tagging, audiences, budgets, trafficking, and more.
- Aid in the development and coordination of digital agency RFPs, such as drafting scopes of work, gathering team inputs, and contributing to the evaluation and selection process.
- Liaise with digital media consultants and agencies as needed to support digital teams.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for global digital consultants, agencies, and platform representatives (e.g., Meta, Google, TikTok), managing relationships to ensure timely access to trends, product updates, and optimisation opportunities.
- Provide hands-on support to digital teams by troubleshooting issues, testing roadmap components, and resolving critical blockers to help ensure seamless campaign execution.
- Provide mentorship on data privacy standards and compliance to ensure digital media activities align with regulatory requirements and standard methodologies.
2) Creative Support for Digital Campaigns — 25%
- Support the management of digital creative production workflows and SOPs to help ensure smooth collaboration across fundraising, creative, and content teams.
- Coordinate across Creative & Content and local country teams to reduce lead times and ensure formats meet platform requirements and accessibility/GDPR standards.
- Support efforts to implement creative testing programs like A/B and dynamic creative, and translate results into scalable standard methodologies.
3) Digital Analytics & Optimisation — 25%
- Lead regular review cadences to analyse digital media performance, surface optimisation opportunities and share cross-market insights.
- Contribute to refining digital attribution models and building clarity around full-funnel performance to help inform and justify ongoing investment in upper-funnel activities.
- Define and maintain core reporting (dashboarding, conversion funnels, LTV/CPA analysis) for digital media and ensure data integrity with MarTech/analytics partners.
- Partner with experimentation and CRO leads to convert insights into prioritised tests and iterate on landing pages and donation flows.
- Lead time-boxed projects to streamline processes underpinning digital fundraising (e.g., automated reporting, audience governance, creative development playbooks).
