What is the role?

Our handling collection at RAF Museum is a valuable resource used by schools, families, community groups, subject specialist groups, and others. The opportunity to interact with real objects from the past is a powerful way to learn about and connect with the RAF story.

Working with the Royal Air Force Museum’s Handling Collection based at our London site, you have the opportunity to assist the documentation and reorganisation of our 3-D objects and clothing items.  This will help staff, volunteers and external users to gain greater access to this part of the collection. Your contribution will also help the relocation of these items to a better storage environment for their longer-term survival. Also gain an understanding of how handling objects are used in a museum environment to increase our audiences understanding and enjoyment of the RAF story.

What will I be doing?

• Cataloguing collections data on a spreadsheet and writing information cards

• Carefully packing, storing and labelling collection items

• Colour coding, theming and labelling storage boxes

• Identifying any needs for remedial conservation and cleaning

• Preparing objects and completing forms for external contractors and borrowers.

This role will be undertaken on site within the RAF Museum’s offices and stores, with staff supervision. It will involve infrequent lifting of some heavy boxes and climbing on a set of low foldable steps. Role Summary.

As a QA Reviewer at Roots Academy, you'll work closely with Regional Leads and the QA team to help maintain and raise the quality of teaching across our programmes. Your role is to support our instructors by regularly observing lessons, offering constructive feedback, and encouraging their continued growth and development.

Your input will help ensure that students benefit from lessons that are clear, engaging, and rooted in sound educational practice.

Key tasks

· Observe lessons via site visits or submitted video recordings throughout the semester.

· Use standardised forms to assess lesson quality and highlight key strengths and areas that could be improved.

· Offer honest and practical feedback, using real examples to guide instructors toward better practice.

· Work alongside Regional Leads to deliver feedback at set points in the semester and support instructor development conversations.

Our 40th anniversary events, taking place at both Cockpit Bloomsbury and Cockpit Deptford, include our biannual Open Studios, the launch of our annual report, The Cockpit Effect, during London Craft Week, and more.

Each event is an invaluable opportunity to meet a diverse body of artist-makers that create and showcase their craft directly to the public.  The volunteer team are key to helping Cockpit deliver a smooth and enriching experience to all our partners and visitors.

Cockpit is a centre of excellence in contemporary craft. Spanning a wide range of craft disciplines, Cockpit makers are united by their extraordinary skill and imagination. A charity and award-winning social enterprise, Cockpit gives makers tools to build their businesses so they can focus on what they do best: making. We provide funded studio space, in-house business training and coaching, and exhibition opportunities for 176 makers practicing 23 different disciplines. The Role: Events Volunteer

What will you do?

By joining the Cockpit team as a volunteer, you help us by being an on-site presence at our events, and you will actively engage with those running the event, offer help, talk to and guide visitors around the building, and pass any problems/issues back to the event manager.

• Ideal for someone with a genuine interest in craft and the creative sector and keen to learn from interactions with the core team and makers
