Overview
The Centre for Transforming Access and Student Outcomes (TASO) is an affiliate What Works Centre, and part of the UK Government’s What Works Movement. Our vision is to eliminate equality gaps in higher education (HE). Our mission is to improve lives through evidence-informed practice.
TASO was set up in 2019 and became an independent charity in April 2021. Our work focuses on the generation, synthesis and dissemination of high-quality evidence about effective practice in widening participation and student outcomes. We primarily focus on developing and disseminating causal evidence.
We are now looking to appoint new Trustees to take TASO forward into its next phase of development and ensure we are an effective and impactful organisation. This is a great time to join us on our journey, offering the opportunity to contribute to shaping and developing an organisation that has the potential to transform lives.
What we are looking for
We are looking for people who are values-led with wide-ranging experiences across different sectors who can bring a different way of thinking. Above all, our Trustees will be passionate about what TASO is striving to achieve.
We are looking for a number of new people with the following professional experience to join our Board:
- Finance and accountancy
- Risk
- People
- Charity and/or company law
We expect the time commitment to be a day a month. This will include quarterly meetings, occasional considered input into working groups and attendance at sector events.
We are looking for one, or more, of our new trustees to sit on our finance and risk committee.
You do not necessarily need to have any experience of being a trustee; TASO will give you a full induction and support to help you develop into this role.

What skills/experience do you need to have?
You don’t need any specific qualifications or skills but you’ll need to:
- Understand and accept the responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee.
- Be non-judgmental and respect views, values and cultures that are different from your own.
- Have good listening, verbal and written communication skills.
- Be able to exercise good independent judgement.
- Have good numeracy skills to understand accounts with the support of the Treasurer.
- Be willing to learn about and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality and data protection.
- Be willing to undertake training for your role.

Citizens Advice Service
The Citizens Advice service is made up of national Citizens Advice and a network of around 290 local Citizens Advice members.
The Citizens Advice service is based on four principles:
- Independent - We will always act in the interests of our clients, without influence from outside bodies
- Impartial - We don’t judge our clients or make assumptions about them. Our service is open to everyone and we treat everyone equally.
- Confidential - We won’t pass anything on what a client tells us, or even the fact they have visited, without permission.
- Free - No client has to pay for any part of the service we provide.
We help resolve people’s problems by accessing a large electronic information system to ensure our clients are given accurate, up-to-date information on their rights and responsibilities. We also aim to change policies and practices that affect our clients, and we call this Research and Campaigns.
What does Citizens Advice Cheshire West do?
Citizens Advice Cheshire West provides general and specialist legal help to everyone in the Cheshire West area.
We give advice to help people overcome the problems they face, in areas such as benefits, debt, employment, housing, relationships and immigration.
We use our knowledge about our clients’ problems to identify trends and campaign to improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives.
We have specialist services including money advice, welfare rights, and energy advice, Help to Claim and Pension Wise service.
Our local service has over 100 trained volunteers and paid staff. We deal with over 15,000 clients each year, via face to face interviews, over the telephone and through email & webchat.
Our aim is to provide “impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities”, irrespective of who they are and what background they are from. We encourage all staff and volunteers to welcome diversity, to respect the individuality of each person and value their contributions.
Everyone that uses or needs our service needs to know that we are free, impartial, confidential and independent. We want people to feel comfortable using our service, know that they can get advice when they need it and receive a good service that meets their needs.
What does a trustee have to do?
- Complete an induction.
- Gain and maintain an awareness of how Citizens Advice Cheshire West operates.
- Read papers for Board meetings and attend 7 meetings per year.
- Be willing to work on projects with other trustees and/or paid staff.
- Attend 1 Trustee Development Day per year.
- Take an active discussion during board meetings and work with other trustees to:
- set policy and strategy direction, set targets and evaluate the performance of Citizens Advice Cheshire West;
- Make a positive impact for local people by ensuring Citizens Advice Cheshire West is sustainable and able to meet the needs of the community;
- Build relationships with staff, volunteers and other trustees;
- seek the views of all sections of the community and monitor how well the service meets the needs of the local community;
- ensure that the service plans for the recruitment and turnover of staff and volunteers; and
- review its own work and how effectively it operates including action for improvement.
- monitor the financial position ensuring that it operates within its means and objectives, ensuring that there are clear lines of accountability for day to day financial management;
- ensure that all the finances and supporting financial control systems are in order including that full financial records are kept for all transactions, that money is only spent for the purpose given, and that proper financial controls are in place to safeguard the organisation’s resources;
How much time do you need to give?
- There are at least 5 two-hour Trustee Board meetings per year, usually held between 5pm and 7pm.
- 1 day per year to attend a Trustee Board Development Day.
- Trustees may be asked to attend additional meetings from time to time, including during office hours.

Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds and we particularly welcome applications from disabled people, people with physical or mental health conditions, LGBT+ and non-binary people, and people from Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

Position: Chair of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is the ultimate governance body for the organisation, serving as stewards of the organisation’s resources, and is ultimately responsible for Self Help UK’s strategy, operations, adherence to law and regulation, and financial management. The Trustees serve on a voluntary basis and currently meet virtually every 6 weeks.
Chair Responsibilities: The Chair leads the Board of Trustees and works closely with the Charity’s Chief Executive and Senior Management Team to achieve its goals. The Chair is responsible for key areas, including:
Strategy and Governance
• Ensuring that the Board operates effectively in the consideration, iteration, and approval of the organisational strategy in support of the charity’s mission and values.
• With Trustees, ensuring that the charity operates efficiently and effectively to fulfil its objectives
• Safeguarding the interests of the charity’s beneficiaries and providing oversight of stakeholder interests • Maintaining high standards of governance and risk management.
• Ensuring that the Board is as diverse as possible and provides the range of knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to deliver the charity’s aims.
• Ensuring the organisation is accountable and transparent in its activities.
• Maintaining compliance with relevant charitable and company legislation.
• Oversight of the Sub Committees of the board.
• Ensuring a high-performing and effective board by committing to regular appraisal and review of Trustees and board performance (including managing retirements and resignations of Trustees).
Guidance and support to the Chief Executive
• Appointment of the Chief Executive and approval of Chief Executive’s salary with the Trustees.
• Line management of and work in partnership with the Chief Executive to support them in achieving the aims of the charity.
• Support and guidance on operations, including personnel management.
Financial
• Ensuring, with the Board, sound financial oversight, including review and approval of the annual budget
• Oversight of high standards of financial management
Advocacy and fundraising
• Using personal and professional networks to help the executive with access to potential donors and supporters, including governments, international bodies, corporations, trusts and foundations, NGOs, and individuals.
• Advise and assist in raising and maintaining the charity’s profile in the UK and internationally.
Lead Board Meetings:
• Lead all aspects of meeting management.
• Encouraging discussion at Board meetings, summarising key points and ensuring decisions are made and implemented.
Remuneration: Unremunerated, but reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed
Time Commitment: Estimated at 2 days per month, but some flexibility and the ability to offer more time on occasion are required.
Standard commitments include:
• Attending Board meetings every 6 weeks. Currently, meetings are held via Zoom
• Attendance at subcommittee meetings as necessary
• Monthly scheduled meeting with the CEO, with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.
• Attending, as a minimum, an annual half-day strategy session and other face-to-face events as required.

Oxfordshire Youth Trustee – Finance Role

Remuneration: None, voluntary position. Expenses for travel may be claimed.

Oxfordshire Youth
Oxfordshire Youth is a boundary-breaking youth development charity, passionate about creating a future for and with young people that gives them the best possible opportunity to realise their potential. Oxfordshire Youth supports the youth sector across the county, working with grassroots leaders; it delivers innovative youth leadership programmes; and it provides a transformational supported accommodation service for young people. In everything it does, OY aims to meet the needs and aspirations of young people. All the charity’s work is grounded in best practice safeguarding and youth work principles and practice.
1. Charity Trustees
The Charities Act 1993 defined charity trustees as those responsible under the charity’s governing document for controlling the administration and management of the charity. This is the case regardless of the terminology used to describe the role. The trustee board at Oxfordshire Youth usually comprises up to twelve trustees, although there is no formal limit on the number of trustees, including the following roles:
- the Chair of the Board of Trustees
- the Deputy Chair and CEO Line-Manager
- the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance, Audit and Risk Sub-Committee
- the Safeguarding Lead and Chair of the Safeguarding,Quality and Impact Sub-Committee the People and Development Lead and Staff Liaison Trustee
2. The Role of the Board
At its most fundamental the role of the trustee board is to receive assets from donors, safeguard them and apply them to the charitable purposes of Oxfordshire Youth. The trustee board must always act in the best interests of Oxfordshire Youth, exercising the same standard of duty of care that a prudent person would apply if looking after the affairs of someone for whom they have responsibility.
Trustees are ultimately and legally responsible for everything Oxfordshire Youth does. Trustees fulfil this responsibility by deciding the strategy, establishing organisational policies and implementing appropriate monitoring, reporting and control mechanisms to ensure and evidence compliance. Trustees appoint the CEO and, on recommendation by the CEO, appoint the Senior Leadership Team to manage all operational matters and the operational team in line with the approved strategy, policies and control mechanisms.
3. Duties of a Trustee
The statutory duties of a trustee are:
- Ensure that Oxfordshire Youth complies with its Articles of Association, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations
- Ensure that Oxfordshire Youth pursues its objects as defined in its Articles of Association
- Ensure Oxfordshire Youth applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects. For example, it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be
- Contribute actively to the board of trustees by giving firm strategic direction to Oxfordshire Youth, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
- Safeguard the good name and values of Oxfordshire Youth
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organization
- Ensure the financial stability of Oxfordshire Youth
- Protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds
- Appoint the Chief Executive Officer and monitor performance
In addition to the statutory duties listed above, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives and evaluating or offering advice on other areas in which the trustee has particular expertise. Trustees must ensure that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
4. Minimum Time Commitment
Trustees are expected to attend an induction session at Oxfordshire Youth prior to their first board meeting. Trustees are expected to attend the four annual board meetings which last approximately three hours (typically 6.30-9.30pm). Papers, proposals and reports are distributed one week in advance of meetings. Trustees may be asked to join a sub-committee or working group each of which have their own terms of reference and minimum time commitments. There is also an annual strategic planning board away-day or residential held each year.
5. Person Specification
Each trustee must have:
- A commitment to the mission of Oxfordshire Youth
- A willingness to meet the minimum time requirement ● An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
- Strategic and forward-looking vision in relation to the charity’s objects and aims
- Independent judgement, political impartiality, an ability to think creatively and a willingness to speak their mind
- Good communication and interpersonal skills including a willingness to use tact and diplomacy to challenge and constructively criticise
- Integrity
The board of trustees collectively needs skills and experience in the following areas:
- Leadership and human resource management
- Financial management, income generation and enterprise
- Safeguarding experience and expertise
- Public policy and public affairs
- National and local youth sector
For this position, we are looking for an individual to join the Board of Trustees who is currently practicing within the finance profession, or who has significant skills and experience within this field, and who would be happy to use their position to provide financial advice and guidance to Oxfordshire Youth.
Oxfordshire Youth (OY) recruits outstanding talent to ensure we provide outstanding programmes services to the young people of Oxfordshire and the organisations who serve them. We are committed to creating a team of people that make diversity and inclusion the normal. Oxfordshire Youth are actively seeking to recruit candidates from Global Ethnic Majority backgrounds, and from candidates who may consider themselves to have lived experiences in the areas in which they work.
Oxfordshire Youth offers Trustees robust training to support them to succeed in their role and to broaden their knowledge on the youth sector, and other relevant issues.
6. Trustee Role Boundaries
Trustees in a decision-making capacity:
- As a board of trustees
- As a sub-committee
- Chair - delegated authority by the board to make decisions between board meetings where necessary
- CEO Line Manager - delegated authority by the board to make decisions between board meetings where necessary
Trustee roles outside of the above decision-making capacity:
- Advisory role (i.e. offering advice in an area of expertise). In this capacity the Trustee is acting as Trustee but, as noted above, does not have decision-making capacity in their own right.
- Volunteer role (i.e. participating in an operational working group). Here the Trustee is subject to the decision-making of the operational team-member who is in a position of authority. As a volunteer the Trustee is at liberty to withdraw.
- Observer role (i.e. attending an OY workshop for young people or observing OY work). In this capacity they are acting as a Trustee but have no role beyond observing or information gathering for the purposes of strengthening their own understanding and / or board-level decision-making.
- Champion role (i.e. spreading the message about the work of OY). In this capacity they are acting as a Trustee, helping to build the profile of the work of OY, with no decision making, but with the view of creating a positive image and sign-posting people to OY.

Haig Housing Trust provides housing for veterans and their families. We’re looking for a passionate, experienced individual to join our Board of Trustees and help us drive real change.
What will you be doing?
Our purpose is to provide quality homes to improve the lives of veterans and their families. We have a long and proud history of supporting our beneficiaries. We have over 1,500 properties across the UK on small well-managed estates, ranging from six houses to 360 homes on our largest estate in Morden. Homes are available at an affordable rent. We also offer extensive support, advice and signposting to assist those in housing need. We believe housing is fundamental to building thriving communities.

With our new chair, the Board will shape our strategic goals, ensuring that we continue to deliver housing that is fit for the future.
We are in a strong financial position. Total income in FY 23/24 was £12M. We are debt-free with a strong balance sheet. We own our properties, have strong reserves and are diversifying our income, growing fundraising so that we can modernise our homes and increase our impact.
We are governed by a diverse Board of independent, non-executive trustees with a wealth of professional, charity and Armed Forces experience. Trustees meet formally every quarter and delegate specific issues to three committees (Finance and Risk, Estates and People) that report to the Board. Who we are
We are seeking trustees to work with a small non-profit family mediation service covering West and North Yorkshire. The service has been in operation for 30 years, helping families that have experienced a breakdown to resolve their outstanding issues surrounding their children, property and finances with a view to avoid the trauma and expense of attending family court. Our mission is simple, by helping people resolve these issues we aim to reduce the mental health traumas incurred by both adults and children who have experienced a family breakdown whilst helping them to alleviate the financial hardship that so often follows a relationship breakdown.
We deliver our service to over a thousand clients annually both remotely and face to face from our main office suite in Bradford and from our satellite suites in Leeds and York.
We do have a small but active board of trustees who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the service and who provide the financial and operational oversight that the service requires.
Who we are looking for
We are looking to expand the number of board members and would welcome expressions of interest from people who would like to be involved with the service and to help us on our mission to continually improve and grow. Whilst there is no specific criteria requested, we would welcome expressions of interest from people who have a legal background, or can help develop our business acumen, or who can aid us with marketing and promotion or who have experience in HR.
The involvement of our trustees in the strategic planning and oversight of the charity is absolutely essential to the success of the service. We hold four trustee meetings each year, three of which are usually held remotely.

About the role

Trustees are responsible for giving direction to The Passage and ensuring it meets its objectives effectively.
They are concerned with the policy, strategy and monitoring of the organisation; day-to-day management is delegated to paid professional staff who report to the Board of Trustees.
Trustees are appointed initially for a period of 3 years and can be re-appointed for 2 further periods of 3 years, up to 9 years.
What you will be doing
Principle responsibilities:
The formal duties of the Board of Trustees collectively are to:
- Ensure that The Passage complies with its Memorandum and Articles of Association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
- Ensure that The Passage pursues its charitable objects as defined in its memorandum of
association. - Ensure The Passage applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects.
- Give clear strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
- Safeguard the good name and the values of The Passage.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of The Passage.
- Ensure the financial stability of The Passage.
- Protect and manage the property of The Passage and to ensure the proper investment of its funds.
- Appoint the Chief Executive, monitor their performance and determine their remuneration.
- Act at all times in the best interests of The Passage, and declare any conflicts of interest.
In addition to the above statutory duties, all Trustees should use any specific knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. This will involve focusing on key issues and providing advice and guidance requested by the Board on issues and initiatives relevant to the area of Passage Housing Services work in which the Trustee has special expertise.
Expectations
In order to fulfill the role of Trustees effectively, all Trustees are expected to:
- Attend Board meetings, currently held quarterly.
- Attend and participate in the Board’s annual strategic planning day held on a weekday (usually off-site).
- Visit The Passage from time to time to build an awareness of the work and develop an understanding of the needs of the different teams.
- Occasionally attend functions on behalf of The Passage, liaise with other Trustees and the Senior Executive Team in between Board meetings.
- Read Board papers in advance of meetings and come prepared to discuss key points arising from those papers.
- Complete the trustee induction process.
- As part of the Board’s ongoing Development Process participate in a one-to-one annual review with the chairman.
