We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the Leicester and District Group. As our local group Support Volunteer you’ll help people affected by MS find information about local and national services. That could be helping someone access local information about the care or benefits they need or giving them a hand with a grant application. See a video about one of our Support Volunteers here.

In this role you’ll be able to develop your listening and communication skills, as well as your knowledge of local services. Most importantly you’ll help people affected by MS to access the help they need.

Time commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About our charity

Everyone deserves to live their life to the full, with maximum choice and control.  Our purpose is to make that a reality for young people with vision impairment and complex needs.  They face a multitude of barriers because of the combined impact of a vision impairment with other disabilities and support needs.  We enable each person to find their unique pathway towards their very best life, using our specialist expertise and knowledge.

Our charity is now looking to recruit new trustees to help shape this vital work.

Plans to develop our board

We are specifically seeking one or more trustees with a good knowledge and experience of adult social care.  As well as the normal duties of a trustee, you would take a specific interest in our adult care service provision – St Davids House (residential care), Jigsaw (day service) and our Supported Living service.  You would scrutinise the quality and operation of our care services for adults and offer advice and challenge to our staff team as a member of our Adult Care Advisory Committee.  You will liaise closely with the Director of Care and Support.

You may have been a senior manager in an adult care service or have been a commissioning manager within the NHS for people with complex care needs.  You will have a passion for great person-centred care.  Experience of CQC would be an advantage.

The Board meets seven times a year and is also invited to all events and celebrations which is optional.  Trustees are warmly encouraged to attend meetings in person, but if required can attend some meetings online.  Expenses are paid for travel and overnight accommodation can be arranged for those not local to Devon.

Don’t have the time to become a full trustee?  We also have a role of Advisory Member on all our committees.  Advisors are appointed by the Board.  This role allows us to access knowledge and experience about running a charity, specialist SEND education and adult social care, but you do not have to take on the full role and responsibility of a trustee.  If you would be interested in finding out more about this role, please contact us.

We’re looking for an empathic person with good listening skills to facilitate our new group for blind and partially sighted veterans. You might be a veteran yourself but this isn’t essential. You’ll help the group run smoothly and the participants to feel comfortable.

This group will run fortnightly by phone.

Deafblind UK support people who have combined sight and hearing loss. We help them to live with their condition and to build their confidence and independence.

Many of our members have lost the confidence to leave the house alone but would love the opportunity to stretch their legs, explore their local areas or to learn new skills to use their local transport network.

We are looking for a volunteer who can help one of our Newport based members to get out locally, increase their fitness and give them the confidence they need to get back out and about in their community. 

Do you need experience? No …. simply a genuine desire to help, access to a car and some spare time on a regular weekly basis.  We will ensure you are supported throughout your journey with us, offering training and support at all times. We will also reimburse out of pocket expenses and pay for your DBS check.

Compassionate Neighbours are trained volunteers offering friendship, support and listening ear to people living in their local community, sometimes with serious, long-term or terminal illness who often struggle with loneliness.

By popping round for a cup of tea or a friendly chat once a week you can make a world of difference. You will be a good listener, kind and have a genuine interest in other people.

As a Compassionate Neighbour Volunteer you’ll not only gain new skills, confidence, and social networks; you’ll be making a difference in your local community.

The Trustees of the RSPH demonstrate a commitment to public health and to using their specific skills, knowledge, and experience to help make collective sound decisions for the benefit of the charity. They are responsible for the governance of RSPH and for setting its vision and mission. The Trustees are responsible for ensuring financial probity and for the strategic direction of the RSPH. They are dedicated to working with the executive to support the objects of RSPH and to ensure that the organisation flourishes to improve and protect the public’s health. 

Time Commitment 

Every trustee is expected to participate in regular RSPH Council meetings (currently four per annum) and may be asked to serve on a sub-committee of the Council. Trustees may be asked to participate in the educational activities of the RSPH by supporting conferences, publications, external relations, or training programmes. 

Opportunities will arise for Trustees to support senior staff in specific projects/initiatives. We would expect you to be able to be able to commit to 8-12 days per year. 

Trustees are generally appointed for a three-year term which may be renewed once.

The Trustee skill mix at RSPH 

As well as the formal duties, Trustees have a key role both as expert advisers and as a 'critical friend' to the Executive Management Team. Therefore, in seeking to identify new Trustees, we are particularly looking to enhance our current range of skills and experience across the Council with Trustees with the following backgrounds:

• Policy/influencing
• Government relations
• Public affairs

Sub-Committees 

RSPH Council has five sub-committees comprising, Audit & Risk, Qualifications Governance, Nominations and Governance, Public Health Workforce and Policy and Impact. We are looking for Trustees who would be able to commit to participation in one or more of these committees. We are especially interested in someone with the expertise to chair our Policy and Impact Committee. 

Support from the RSPH 

In return for this commitment, the charity will:

• Provide induction, training and support to enable trustees to carry out their role as effectively as possible. 
• Give adequate notice of relevant dates and events.
• Provide reports and papers in advance of meetings.
• Respond to information requests and governance queries.
• Trustees at RSPH are unremunerated; however, reasonable expenses will be covered in accordance with our Expenses Policy.

Home-Start works with families in communities, supporting  thousands of families and children to transform their lives. At Home-Start Birmingham Central and South-West we're now seeking a Chairperson.

What will you be doing?

At Home-Start Birmingham Central and South-West we are seeking a Chair to contribute their expertise and experience to lead and support the effective running and governance of the Scheme.

We’re looking for a skilled volunteer who can Chair the board, as well as lead on strategic and operational advice and guidance.

As Chair, you will work with fellow trustees and the Scheme Manager, to advise on governance, have oversight of finances, risks, safeguarding, lead on the direction of the Scheme to achieve its objectives and support operational aspects.

The role will be responsible for:

· provide supervision and management of Scheme Manager and act as sounding board for staff

· lead and support the Strategic role to use local procedures appropriately

· contribute to Board discussions about the Home-Start’s capacity in working with more complex families, including those where there are child protection concerns

· support the Board to monitor and review systems, policy and procedures to ensure good practice within the Home-Start and compliance with the Home-Start Quality Assurance Standards

· Ensuring the board of trustees understands and fulfils its responsibilities

· You will also play a vital role, along with the rest of the board of trustees, in developing our overall Scheme strategy and ensuring the ongoing good governance of the Scheme.
