Brief
There are always jobs to be done to care for the Museum – replacing light-bulbs, deep cleaning, oiling locks, and painting – helping to improve the visitor experience and protect the artefacts. We rely on our maintenance team to build and create displays, and to maintain, restore and repair our collection. Whether you are a skilled craftsperson, or good at DIY, we have a project for you to help.
This back of house role is for you if you are a hands-on team player, have some experience or interest in a craft/trade and are physically fit.
Purpose of Role
Under the direction of the Maintenance Team Leader, there are several tasks that are carried out:
· General maintenance tasks to restore, repair and maintain Milton Keynes Museum buildings, machines and exhibits
Key elements
After relevant training has been provided:
· General DIY and maintenance tasks, including painting and decorating
· Create, repair and maintain buildings and displays in the museum, including emergency repairs
· Moving the collection
Your profile
What we are looking for:

What will I be doing?

Helping carry out and log a rolling schedule of pre-planned checks, maintenance and repairs.

Making regular fire systems and legionella checks.

Keeping an eye on the safety, state of repair and smooth running of all plant, machinery and equipment.

Being available, if possible, for emergency call-outs (though this is not essential).
How much time should I give?
Ideally one day per week but we can be flexible to suit our volunteers and the hospice.

What do I need to have?

Reliability, consistency and attention to detail

Ideally, some experience in routine building maintenance and repairs, such as plumbing, electrics, HVAC system maintenance and carpentry.

Ability to work as part of a team and independently.

A permanent UK address or a visa that allows you to stay and volunteer in the UK (unfortunately we cannot sponsor visa applications).
What training and support will I be given?
You will be supported by the Maintenance Lead and Head of Operations. You will receive induction plus training such as health and safety regulations and best practices, conducting safety inspections and addressing hazards to ensure you feel confident and capable in your role.

About The Role
An exciting opportunity to volunteer with the team at the Conservation Breeding Unit (CBU) at Slimbridge has arisen. As a CBU horticulture and maintenance volunteer, you will play a vital role in assisting the Conservation Breeding Team to uphold the highest standards of care and welfare. You'll achieve this by maintaining and constructing facilities and aviaries at CBU and carrying out various horticultural roles such as grass mowing, weeding and 'planting up' aviaries for a collection of birds that are vital to ongoing conservation efforts.
This role is ideal if you are interested in learning how things work 'behind the scenes' at an organisation that prides itself on carrying out effective and successful wetland conservation. You will have the opportunity to develop your horticultural and DIY skills. You will also learn from a team of dedicated conservation aviculturists who are happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm, making this an ideal stepping-stone for those who are looking to enter the world of practical conservation work but require more experience to get their foot in the door.
Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.
About You
This role could be perfect for you if you are:
- An early career conservationist/aviculturist looking for some extra experience of working within the sector
- Looking to develop your skillset, especially horticultural skills, through experience and training opportunities
- Keen to learn and improve your understanding of how conservation looks and functions 'behind the scenes'

We are looking for someone who:
- Cares about managing vegetation in and around a small site for the benefit of wildlife.
- Is proactive and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision, initiative is a highly valued characteristic.
- Is willing to listen and learn new skills and information on a regular basis in order to support the work of CBU.
- Has a moderate level of fitness.
- Is able to work well within a small, cross-department team and doesn't mind getting wet and mucky!
- Has some knowledge or experience of gardening/conservation/DIY (not essential).

General notes:
Road: Slimbridge Wetland Centre is 2 miles off the A38. There is a large car park with ample car parking spaces and there is a bike rack available for staff volunteers. Rail: Cam & Dursley rail station is a 3.5 mile cycle or taxi ride away. Bus: Unfortunately, there is no bus service directly to Slimbridge: the nearest services stop is at the A38, 2 miles walk from the Centre.
This position is entirely voluntary and is therefore unpaid. Are you green-fingered and have time to help nurture wildflowers for the community?
The Wetland Wildflower Project aims to grow and distribute meadow plants of local provenance to enhance the wildflower diversity of local community projects, as well as the grounds and reserve areas at WWT Slimbridge. We will grow these plants in a recently refurbished polytunnel at Slimbridge.
Floodplain meadows are not only beautiful, but these rare, species-rich plant communities are part of the heritage of the Severn Vale. Floodplain meadows can store more carbon than woodlands, are incredibly biodiverse and can help mitigate flooding. Unfortunately, today just over 1000ha remain in England and Wales.
To help our efforts to restore floodplain meadows and other wet grasslands in the Severn Vale, we are looking for volunteers to assist with growing wildflower plug plants in our polytunnel.
This is a great role for those who will enjoy this hands-on work behind the scenes, whilst playing a role in saving wetlands for wildlife and people.
Tasks will include:
- Receiving simple training on the methods and essential health & safety
- Caring for plug plants e.g. weeding, hand watering, potting on plants for sale in shop and watering and replacing these, as required
- Seed collecting and looking for pests and diseases
- Preparing plants for orders
- Ensuring optimal growing conditions in the polytunnel e.g. raising /lowering sides of tunnel, adapting automatic watering regime
- Some general maintenance, as needed, including moving trays and keeping work areas clean and safe
- Updating records, e.g. of any problems/loss of plants/transfer of plants
- Planting out plugs, as and when required
- Supporting attendance at plant sales and fairs, as agreed

This takes a lot of looking after though and we are keen to hear from potential volunteers who would like to take on a specific area of our site as a project, tending to it on a weekly basis and seeing it flourish throughout the summer. There are several areas to choose from, including our Enrichment Paddock, Behaviour Cabin Garden and Pet Cemetery. There are also general gardening tasks to crack on wtih, such as sweeping the Summer House, mowing and strimming, and tackling weeds in the kennel block paddocks.
This is a rewarding role as you will be able to see at the end of your shift the results of your hard work! You will also have the satisfaction of knowing that you have directly impacted the lives of the animals in our care by creating a safe outside space for them to enjoy off-lead play time and exploration, keeping their bodies active and their brains engaged.
About You
You will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a love for animals. This role requires elements of manual handling so you will need to be physically fit and this should be considered upon application. You will be a team player who is able to carefully follow instructions and relevant health and safety requirements for the position, for example the use of appropriate PPE.
Full in person training will be provided by the maintenance team. Your hours will be flexible in line with current staffing levels, but during the spring and summer a weekly requirement of at least 2 hours is required, weather-dependant.

Volunteer Officers are a key part of our team, working with young people and the local community at Skelton Grange Environment Centre. You will be trained and supported by experienced project staff and work as part of a team with paid staff, trainees and Volunteer Officers.
Typical activities for a Volunteer Officer include:
- Running environmental education, play and engagement activities for groups of children and young people on the Skelton Grange Environment Centre site.
- Leading or assisting groups of volunteers on practical conservation tasks, including preparing and organising activities, supporting and training volunteers (including some with additional support needs), looking after tools, refreshments and group welfare.
- Assisting with public events and related activities.
- Working to develop and maintain the wildlife area as an exciting and inspiring location for visitors to get a hands on experience with nature. This will include both development work and routine maintenance.
- Helping with the general running of the centre and the project.
