An incredibly rare in-house opportunity for a self-motivated & collaborative Communications Officer to join one of the City of London’s most historic and prestigious organisations.
Founded in 1617, The Society of Apothecaries was set up as a members’ association specifically to support doctors, pharmacists, and other health professionals, with the purpose of furthering education, research and innovation in the medical field. Today, the Society, continues to support medical students who are struggling financially and through our Centre for Health Studies, runs a wide range of educational programmes including, post-graduate Medical Diplomas, courses and lectures open to the General Public. Our members are still predominantly medical professionals. We are based at the wonderful C17th Apothecaries Hall, a Grade 1 listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument, where we host a wide range of events including black- and white-tie dinners.
The Communications Officer reports directly to the Senior Leadership Team and sits at the centre of all the Society’s activities. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional who believes that excellent communications have the power to bring people together to facilitate change. You will:
1. Manage the communications and engagement functions in-house to serve all areas of the Society.
2. In collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team & key stakeholders, manage the annual pattern of communications & engagement activities required and ensure key deadlines are met.
3. Be the guardian of the Society’s brand including visual content, tone of voice and owned channels of communication; working with external branding consultants where applicable, act as the main point of contact for checking & editing materials destined for Society and external audiences to ensure they comply with agreed branding.
4. Work across the Society to ensure consistency of message in all communications.
5. Build and maintain relationships across all internal departments to develop, coordinate and facilitate effective communications.
6. Through excellent relationship management with all key stakeholders, be aware of current activities across all of the Society’s branches.
7. Develop & deliver content across the Society’s communications channels, e.g. website, digital newsletters, social media, media relations, printed and digital leaflets, following agreed approval processes and in collaboration with relevant teams.
8. Act as the webmaster for the Society’s website; administering updates within agreed approval processes.
9. Market the Society’s activities including events, lectures, examinations, and courses to attract attendance.
10. Lead the annual production of key Society engagement materials, including the Society Members’ Handbook, Apothecary journal and Galen Awards Ceremony brochure, managing and liaising with key contributors (including volunteers) to ensure timelines are met.
11. Evaluate the success of communications activities against the Society’s goals and objectives to inform the way forward.
12. Report and collaborate on communications activities by organising and minuting monthly comms meetings.
13. Have a strong awareness of the Society’s purpose and objectives, through familiarity with the Communications Strategy, Society’s Standing Orders & By-laws, output of Committees and operational strategic plans.
Please note that due to the high level of interest in this role, you must have hands-on experience of creating and implementing content, including using digital platforms. You will be a wordsmith with a proven track record of producing content appropriate for the target audience(s).

The Communications Department at Alzheimer’s Research UK inspires, engages and informs the public about dementia and the progress being made in research. The department leads on the charity’s media and PR work, including everything from the latest research breakthroughs to compelling stories from people who have been affected by dementia, as well as engaging the public through face-to-face events and activities.
The Communications Assistant will play a key role within the Strategic Communications function. They will be a part of the Supporters & Families Communications team, who recruit and work with the charity’s Media & Communications Volunteers and other supporters, sharing their lived experience of dementia to highlight why the charity’s mission is so vital.
This is a varied role that will involve the day-to-day management of our image and story library and essential administrative support for the Strategic Communications teams. The Assistant will also have the opportunity to generate engaging content to support our fundraising teams in an effort to raise much-needed funds for life-changing dementia research.

Main duties and responsibilities of the role:
Administrative:
Manage the day-to-day organisation of supporter story content and related assets on the digital asset management system (ResourceSpace), which serves as the organisation’s image and story library, including;
· Upload supporter story assets (story write-ups, images and related resources) to the system with associated consent.
· Manage consent of supporter stories and associated imagery to ensure the assets on the system are GDPR-compliant and protect the interests of our supporters.
· Be the point of contact within the Communications department for ResourceSpace queries.
· Use internal communications channels to champion the use of ResourceSpace across the organisation.
· Proactively identify opportunities to improve the system for users through user feedback and problem-solving to ensure the system is working optimally for teams across Alzheimer’s Research UK.
· Work with teams across the organisation to understand their needs and help provide them with curated content.
· Create and update user guides and guidance for ResourceSpace users and administrators.
· Proactively manage the content lifecycle, monitoring the usage of assets through regular reporting. Identify needs for updating content and gaps and opportunities for additional content.
Provide admin support to the Supporter & Families Communications team with their use of the organisation’s customer relationship management system (Salesforce) to record correspondence with and the activities of Media & Communications Volunteers.
· Generate reports of Media & Communications Volunteer activities through Salesforce to provide insights to the team.
Provide administrative support for the Strategic Communications teams as needed, to help manage the flow of communications and media work.
Media & Communications:
· Work with supporters to tell their fundraising stories and personal experiences of dementia for use on our own channels (social media, email newsletters, website articles etc) and to create marketing content to be held on ResourceSpace for organisational use.
· Work with fundraising teams, and other relevant teams, to establish their supporter story needs and gather stories to fulfil this.
· Provide internal communications support as needed for the Strategic Communications teams and Communications department. Use various internal communications channels to champion the work of the Supporters & Families Communications team and other Strategic Communications teams.
· Be a part of the Communications department’s newsdesk function, helping to respond to media enquiries and provide media briefings across the organisation.
· Use our media database to prepare distribution lists for proactive media work as needed and support with the monitoring of media coverage.

We’re looking for a Marketing Manager (Fixed Term) to join our team
Salary: Circa £40,000
Base: Central Edinburgh/hybrid
Hours: Full time and fixed term for 12 months. 35 hours a week over core working hours of 10am – 3pm, Monday to Friday, with a one-hour lunch break. The office is open 8am – 7pm daily and our hybrid working policy requires all full-time employees to work at least two days a week in the Edinburgh office.

Email Marketing
- Plan and execute targeted, data-driven email marketing campaigns aligned with the eoa’s business calendar and goals, using segmentation, A/B testing, and marketing automation tools.

Website Management
- Manage and maintain the eoa website, ensuring timely, relevant, and SEO-optimised content through collaboration with content creators.

- Ensure website compliance with accessibility, GDPR, and brand guidelines, coordinating with all stakeholders as needed.

About you

- Competence in Google Analytics and SEO best practices.
