What your role will involve

• Helping supervise the shop and other volunteers.

Overview
No Panic is a national charity providing desperately needed support to people suffering from anxiety.

We are seeking volunteers with experience of researching financial costs, to assist fundraisers in our Large Funding Applications Team, by providing figures they need to apply for funding. Funding that helps the charity sustain and grow the services offered to our members.

If you are enthusiastic about helping No Panic to develop further as a charity and expand the number of anxiety sufferers they support, and have experience in assessing financial costs, we encourage you to apply for this rewarding opportunity.

Activities

Research and evaluate running costs, such as salaries, rent, equipment and expenses.

Compile the figures, and present them to the Large Funding Applications Team fundraisers.

The anticipated time commitment is 3 hours a week, this may vary, and we ask our volunteers to commit to at least a year.

Desired Skills

Desirable skills would be financial research.

They should also be proactive and good at compiling researched information.

A reference is required.

Support

Large Funding Applications Team researchers will work under the co-ordination of No Panic staff. Staff will be able to advise on whether to go ahead with funding applications. Staff will also provide any information that is required. Staff will review applications before they are submitted.

We are looking for a male mentor volunteer to provide guidance, support, and inspiration to young boys in our Brent Domestic Abuse Service. You will act as a positive role model by offering a listening ear for challenges, helping build social connections, and developing life skills like self-esteem, respecting others, and decision-making. This role requires empathy, reliability, and a commitment to a positive, non-judgmental approach. If you would like to make a difference, get in touch!

Hestia provides holistic, one-to-one support in our refuges and the community. Our refuge services are for women and children, offering a safe place to stay and vital emotional and practical support.

Outside of our refuges, most of our support services are accessible by anyone who has experienced domestic abuse, including men.

In the last year, 3,855 women and children were supported by Hestia to recover from domestic abuse.

Anyone can experience domestic abuse, at any point in their life, regardless of their background, age, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. However, it is a gendered crime, with women being three times more likely to be victims.

We help people understand what domestic abuse is and develop the knowledge, skills and tools they need to protect themselves, stay safe and leave a relationship, if and when they’re ready to do so.

What you will be doing

• Build a trusting relationship with a young boy by being a supportive, compassionate, and empathetic friend and role model
• Help the young person identify and work toward personal and academic goals
• Provide guidance and support on challenges the young boy faces, helping them consider various options and make positive life choices
• Support the young person in developing positive life skills and problem-solving abilities
• Assist in making social connections within the local community or through other positive activities and groups

• Ability to listen effectively and non-judgmentally
• A genuine desire to support young people and an ability to understand their needs and concerns
• Willingness to serve as a positive example and share experiences, if appropriate

The Role and Responsibilities

The appointment is primarily strategic in nature, focused on providing robust oversight, direction, and scrutiny, rather than day-to-day management.

Key responsibilities include:

• Setting the College's strategic direction and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and funding requirements.

• Scrutinising performance and holding the Executive leadership team to account as a 'critical friend.'

• Engaging in discussions concerning strategic planning, financial oversight, and the monitoring of teaching and learning quality.

• Reviewing, understanding, and challenging reports prepared by the College Leadership team prior to and during formal meetings.

We are committed to appointing a diverse range of individuals. Whilst previous experience in governance is not a prerequisite, candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest and passion for contributing to the betterment of the local community and enabling students to fulfil their potential. 

Required Areas of Expertise

We welcome individuals with varied skills and experience.  At this time we are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with professional expertise in the following domains:

• Finance;

• Information Technology (particularly Cyber Security and/or Artificial Intelligence); or

• Secondary or Higher Education

Potential exists to progress to become a Committee Chair or Vice Chair of the Corporation.

Time Commitment and Logistics

Commitment

Voluntary and non-remunerated; reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed.

Term of Office

Governor: Four years; Committee Member: Three years.

Meetings

2-3 Monday evenings per term on site at the College in Eastleigh, generally lasting 2-3 hours.  Online attendance is not generally permitted but will be considered in specific circumstances.

Preparation

An estimated 2-3 hours of advance reading is required for each meeting.

Full Governors serve on the main Corporation and at least one dedicated Committee (e.g., Search and Governance, Standards, Finance and Employment, Audit). Co-opted Members serve solely on a Committee initially, with potential progression to a full Governorship within 6-12 months.

Candidates are also strongly encouraged to attend additional College events and departmental visits each term.

Submission of Interest

2. A Letter of Interest (not exceeding 250 words) detailing suitability for the role, relevant experience, and any particular specialism or interest.

There is no fixed deadline for applications. Due to administration by volunteers, applicants should allow up to 10 working days for a response.

Recruitment Stages and Prerequisites to Appointment

All applicants will be invited to the College to meet with the Chair of Governors, the Principal, the Clerk, and an existing Governor. This process is intentionally informal, serving as an opportunity for mutual assessment and for candidates to tour the College facilities.

Safeguarding and Compliance: All appointed Governors are required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, annual Safeguarding training, and commit to the College Code of Conduct, which incorporates the 'Seven Principles of Public Life' (Nolan Principles).

Volunteering for Sense

Sense is a leading disability charity with extensive knowledge and expertise in delivering personalised, creative and flexible support for disabled people with complex needs. Our tailored approach ensures that every person is empowered to live fully at every stage of life.

Due to the nature of the role, we require all applicants to be aged 16 or over. You must have a UK address to volunteer with Sense.

What your role will involve

You’ll get the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service, helping create a wonderful shopping experience.
• Receiving donated items from the public, thanking them for their support.
• Sorting, steaming and preparing donations for sale.
• Helping to display stock in eye-catching and exciting ways.
• Keeping the shop floor clean, safe and tidy.
• Talking to customers about Sense and the work we do. 

When you’re ready, we’ll provide you with additional training to:

• Serve customers on the till in a warm and friendly way.
• Put sales through the till, packing them and thanking the customer for shopping with us.
• Talk to customers about Gift Aid and other fundraising initiatives.

If you’re interested in taking on additional responsibilities, you can train to become a Key Volunteer, helping the shop manager by:

• Helping supervise the shop and other volunteers.
• Supporting the shop manager to make sure customers have a great experience.
• Opening and closing the shop when needed.
• Cashing up at the end of the day.
