What is a Helper?
SSAFA Helpers provide support to local SSAFA branches, so that the service to veterans and their families can run smoothly. Perhaps you could help out at an event, take care of some office admin, or give a talk about SSAFA?
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
We have peak times throughout the year when we need extra volunteers. Whether you enjoy organising behind the scenes or being out meeting the public, we need people who can offer some time on a flexible basis.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role will suit you if you are looking to volunteer on a flexible basis as and when you are available, and we need extra help. You may be based in an office, at home, or out and about at events.
What would you be doing?
- Helping at public events by staffing stalls, stewarding etc
- Helping to distribute Christmas hampers to clients.
- Giving talks about SSAFA to schools and local groups
- Helping with office tasks like stuffing envelopes, ordering marketing materials
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

Relevant Persons Representative (RPR) Volunteers ‘looks out’ for an older or disabled person living in a Residential and Nursing care home, making sure they are getting the right care and support and are being treated fairly. This role provides support for people with a Deprivation Of Liberty Safeguard (DOLS) in place. A DOLS is a deprivation of Liberty Safeguarding meaning the person you support is unable to leave of their own free will. A DOLS is put in place to protect individuals from harm or abuse.

The Counter-Trafficking team at HBF is a small but very busy team; it works with people who have been trafficked for all forms of exploitation and supports them in their involvement in the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), asylum and criminal justice systems. The Counter-Trafficking programme provides access to vital ongoing contact and safeguarding support for clients to ensure that they are kept safe and that their risks from others are minimised. The team takes a holistic approach which is tailored to the specific needs of clients, who have experienced human trafficking for sexual exploitation, forms of forced labour and/or criminal exploitation, amongst others.
As a Counter-Trafficking volunteer, you will be trained to take an active role in the administrative and casework load of the team, and to help to provide pastoral support for our clients. This includes online filing, collating case materials (legal, clinical and other) to provide client chronologies, supporting the process of counter-trafficking assessments and other appointments, meeting remotely and in person with clients and engaging in tasks required to support the team. This is a fast-paced role, vital for the proper functioning of the team. You will be exposed to very traumatic information, but you will have careful, friendly supervision from a positive staff team in all aspects of your work.
Main tasks and activities
· Entering client data into our CMS database
· Supporting Counter-Trafficking team staff with organising and booking client appointments
· Collating legal and other case materials, writing up clients’ chronologies and drafting letters
· Follow up calls with clients and/or professionals involved in cases
· Meeting remotely or in person with clients alongside Counter-Trafficking team staff members
· Taking clear and comprehensive notes at meetings with and about clients
· Researching and collating key data and information for clients and the staff team
· Administrative tasks as required by the team
Skills and Experience
Needed:
· Understanding of, and commitment to, the objectives of the Helen Bamber Foundation.
· A demonstrable empathy for our clients, including asylum seekers, refugees and survivors of torture and human trafficking.
· Experience of working with asylum seekers, refugees and survivors of human trafficking & awareness of the challenges they may face.
· A high level of understanding of the duty of confidentiality when considering the sensitive information that the Counter-Trafficking team handles.
· A respect for the principles of diversity and human rights.
· Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
· Strong time management and prioritisation skills.
· Willingness to learn and ability to adapt in a fast-moving environment.
· Comfortable using Office 365 (in particular Outlook, Word & Excel).
Desired:

Your role will include supporting clients to understand and undertake a task on a one-to-one basis. The task will vary from client to client as will the needs of the individual.
As a support session volunteer, you might:
- help people have their say when it matters most
- Helping individuals navigate challenges and ensuring their needs are met
- help people to make complaints and use local services
All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00. You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

ABandOfBrothers Trustee Role Description
Key responsibilities
- Ensure that ABandOfBrothers pursues its objectives
- Ensure that ABandOfBrothers applies its resources carefully and responsibly
- Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees' role in direction to ABandOfBrothers – setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and measuring performance
- Keep the young men we exist to support at the heart of decision making
- Ensure that ABandOfBrothers complies with the various legislation relating to charities
- Safeguard the good name and values of ABandOfBrothers
- Ensure the effective administration of ABandOfBrothers
- Ensure the financial stability of ABandOfBrothers
- Protect and manage the property of the charity and ensure the proper investment of the charity's funds
In addition, all Trustees should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions and provide honest and constructive criticism, advice and comments.
Further duties
- Support our staff to improve operations by bringing specialist knowledge and skills, contacts and networks and experience on different aspects of the operations as required
- Read Board papers carefully in advance of meetings
- Keep informed of the services provided by ABandOfBrothers
- Network where possible on behalf of ABandOfBrothers to support income generation from organisations and individuals
Further duties of Trustees as a group
- Be accountable to funders for the services provided and money spent
- Appoint charity leadership
- Approve major actions of ABandOfBrothers, such as capital spending and major programme changes
- Annually review the performance of the Board and take steps to improve its performanceSeek new Trustees when appropriate
- Appoint independent auditors
What We're Looking For
We aim for our Trustee Board as a group to have a mix of skills and backgrounds. Ultimately, we want to find people who are committed to ABandOfBrothers’s mission and who have the time to meaningfully engage at board level. Some additional things we're looking out for this time include:
- Lived experience of the care system or experience of the care system from your working life
- Lived experience of the criminal justice system (this might be your own experience, but could also be that of a partner or family member) or experience of the criminal justice system from your working life
- Experience of HR and employment law
- A background in successful charity fundraising or a network that you are happy to share to further our fundraising efforts
Time commitment
Our Board meets four-six times a year, for about three hours. Trustees also provide support and advice to the leadership team between meetings on subjects from fundraising to programmes. We are happy to pay travel and childcare expenses to enable Trustees to attend.
Trustees are normally appointed for four years. This term is sometimes then extended for a further four years to a maximum term of eight years.

Previous convictions
There's a small range of offences- mainly fraud, sexual offences and terrorism-related offences – which can currently disqualify some people with unspent convictions from serving as a charity Trustee. Even in these cases, individuals can apply for a 'waiver' and this is often granted. If this is a matter of concern for you, please raise it- completely privately- with us via the email above. We’ll arrange an informal chat with one of our trustees to discuss.

What is a Helper?
SSAFA Helpers provide support to local SSAFA branches, so that the service to veterans and their families can run smoothly. Perhaps you could help out at an event, take care of some office admin, or give a talk about SSAFA?
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
We have peak times throughout the year when we need extra volunteers. Whether you enjoy organising behind the scenes or being out meeting the public, we need people who can offer some time on a flexible basis.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role will suit you if you are looking to volunteer on a flexible basis as and when you are available, and we need extra help. You may be based in an office, at home, or out and about at events.
What would you be doing?
- Helping at public events by staffing stalls, stewarding etc
- Helping to distribute Christmas hampers to clients.
- Giving talks about SSAFA to schools and local groups
- Helping with office tasks like stuffing envelopes, ordering marketing materials
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

- Ability to keep within the boundaries of the role with regards to safeguarding, giving advice etc.
- Reliable attitude, keep appointments, update the branch regarding your availability.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and keep information safely.
- Access to transport if needed for your role.

Oxfam's Ulverston Shop is looking for Shop Volunteers to help Oxfam’s fight to support the world’s most vulnerable communities.
We’re looking for volunteers who can give 4-8 hours (or more!) of their time in the shop each week, and we’re excited to welcome brand new volunteers to our stores!
Right now, we're looking for people to help in the shop in our stock room and with our ecommerce/online department!

1. WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS
Release Therapy for Women provides safe, therapeutic spaces for women across Sussex. Our groups are the heart of what we do, and our Therapeutic Group Support Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring these sessions run smoothly.
You will work alongside a Lead Facilitator to create a warm, inclusive, and physically comfortable environment.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Creating a Welcoming Space
* Environment Setup: Arrive early to set up the therapeutic space, ensuring it is tidy, welcoming, and comfortable.
* Sensory Awareness: Pay attention to lighting, noise levels, and seating arrangements to support our neurodivergent participants and those with social anxiety.
* The "Warm Welcome": Greet participants as they arrive, particularly focused on making new members feel at ease and helping to serve drinks.
Supporting the Session
* Facilitation Assistance: Support the Lead Facilitator with practical tasks (handing out materials, managing refreshments, or keeping time).
* Participant Support: Provide a calm, grounded presence. While you are not the primary therapist, you may offer one-to-one emotional support (e.g., sitting with someone who needs a moment outside the circle).
* Closing the Space: Assist in packing away and briefly debriefing with the Facilitator after participants have left.
Inclusion & Data
Actively model inclusive behaviour, ensuring women of all ages, faiths, and sexual orientations feel safe.
* Equality Monitoring: Assist in the distribution of our anonymous Equalities Monitoring forms. In line with our 2026 vision, you will help explain to participants that their data helps us secure the funding needed to keep our groups free for everyone.
3. PERSON SPECIFICATION
Knowledge and Experience
* Counselling Foundation: You have previous counselling experience or have undertaken introductory counselling training.
* Therapeutic Understanding: An understanding of (or a strong interest in) the group therapeutic process and the importance of boundaries and confidentiality.
* Inclusive Values: A deep commitment to equality and a passion for making therapeutic spaces accessible to marginalised groups.
Skills and Abilities
* Empathy & Presence: A calm, grounded, and non-judgemental approach to supporting women in distress.
* Reliability: The ability to commit to a full 6–10 week group cycle to provide continuity of care for our participants.
* Communication: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a Lead Facilitator.
* Local Insight: Ideally, you will live in or have strong ties to Brighton, Worthing, or Shoreham/Southwick.
