Due to the nature of the role, we require all applicants to be aged 16 or over. You must have a UK address to volunteer with Sense.

What your role will involve

You’ll get the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service, helping create a wonderful shopping experience.
• Receiving donated items from the public, thanking them for their support.
• Sorting, steaming and preparing donations for sale.
• Helping to display stock in eye-catching and exciting ways.
• Keeping the shop floor clean, safe and tidy.
• Talking to customers about Sense and the work we do. 

When you’re ready, we’ll provide you with additional training to:

• Serve customers on the till in a warm and friendly way.
• Put sales through the till, packing them and thanking the customer for shopping with us.
• Talk to customers about Gift Aid and other fundraising initiatives.

If you’re interested in taking on additional responsibilities, you can train to become a Key Volunteer, helping the shop manager by:

• Helping supervise the shop and other volunteers.
• Supporting the shop manager to make sure customers have a great experience.
• Opening and closing the shop when needed.
• Cashing up at the end of the day.

The Role and Responsibilities

The appointment is primarily strategic in nature, focused on providing robust oversight, direction, and scrutiny, rather than day-to-day management.

Key responsibilities include:

• Setting the College's strategic direction and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and funding requirements.

• Scrutinising performance and holding the Executive leadership team to account as a 'critical friend.'

• Engaging in discussions concerning strategic planning, financial oversight, and the monitoring of teaching and learning quality.

• Reviewing, understanding, and challenging reports prepared by the College Leadership team prior to and during formal meetings.

We are committed to appointing a diverse range of individuals. Whilst previous experience in governance is not a prerequisite, candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest and passion for contributing to the betterment of the local community and enabling students to fulfil their potential. 

Required Areas of Expertise

We welcome individuals with varied skills and experience.  At this time we are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with professional expertise in the following domains:

• Finance;

• Information Technology (particularly Cyber Security and/or Artificial Intelligence); or

• Secondary or Higher Education

Potential exists to progress to become a Committee Chair or Vice Chair of the Corporation.

Time Commitment and Logistics

Commitment

Voluntary and non-remunerated; reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed.

Term of Office

Governor: Four years; Committee Member: Three years.

Meetings

2-3 Monday evenings per term on site at the College in Eastleigh, generally lasting 2-3 hours.  Online attendance is not generally permitted but will be considered in specific circumstances.

Preparation

An estimated 2-3 hours of advance reading is required for each meeting.

Full Governors serve on the main Corporation and at least one dedicated Committee (e.g., Search and Governance, Standards, Finance and Employment, Audit). Co-opted Members serve solely on a Committee initially, with potential progression to a full Governorship within 6-12 months.

Candidates are also strongly encouraged to attend additional College events and departmental visits each term.

Submission of Interest

2. A Letter of Interest (not exceeding 250 words) detailing suitability for the role, relevant experience, and any particular specialism or interest.

There is no fixed deadline for applications. Due to administration by volunteers, applicants should allow up to 10 working days for a response.

Recruitment Stages and Prerequisites to Appointment

All applicants will be invited to the College to meet with the Chair of Governors, the Principal, the Clerk, and an existing Governor. This process is intentionally informal, serving as an opportunity for mutual assessment and for candidates to tour the College facilities.

Safeguarding and Compliance: All appointed Governors are required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, annual Safeguarding training, and commit to the College Code of Conduct, which incorporates the 'Seven Principles of Public Life' (Nolan Principles).

New Governors receive comprehensive onboarding and support from the College Clerk, including access to internal and external training events.

The Digital Fundraising Trustee will participate in all areas of the charity’s governance with a special interest in the fundraising implications of the strategy, governance and support with the Board’s understanding and interpretation.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the CLAPA’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. You would be joining our board at an exciting time, as we implement our new 5-year strategy for 2025-2030.

Volunteering for Sense

Sense is a leading disability charity with extensive knowledge and expertise in delivering personalised, creative and flexible support for disabled people with complex needs. Our tailored approach ensures that every person is empowered to live fully at every stage of life.

Due to the nature of the role, we require all applicants to be aged 16 or over. You must have a UK address to volunteer with Sense.

What your role will involve

You’ll get the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service, helping create a wonderful shopping experience.
• Receiving donated items from the public, thanking them for their support.
• Sorting, steaming and preparing donations for sale.
• Helping to display stock in eye-catching and exciting ways.
• Keeping the shop floor clean, safe and tidy.
• Talking to customers about Sense and the work we do. 

When you’re ready, we’ll provide you with additional training to:

• Serve customers on the till in a warm and friendly way.
• Put sales through the till, packing them and thanking the customer for shopping with us.
• Talk to customers about Gift Aid and other fundraising initiatives.

If you’re interested in taking on additional responsibilities, you can train to become a Key Volunteer, helping the shop manager by:

• Helping supervise the shop and other volunteers.
• Supporting the shop manager to make sure customers have a great experience.
• Opening and closing the shop when needed.
• Cashing up at the end of the day.

Are you someone who loves to drive and enjoys the freedom of the open road? Here’s an opportunity to use your driving skills to help others while making a positive impact in your local community. At Together Trust, we champion the rights, needs, and ambitions of children, young people, and adults with disabilities, autism, and mental health differences – and we need volunteers like you to make a difference.

What You’ll Be Doing:

As a Volunteer Driver, you’ll help transport people to a variety of destinations, including social activities, school, work placements, day trips, and more. Your time and kindness will help enrich lives, giving those we support greater independence and opportunities to thrive. The role is flexible, and you’ll find it just as fulfilling as the people you support.

What You’ll Need:

• A full UK driving licence (held for at least two years) or a D1 entitlement.
• A few hours a week (or more, if you prefer) to give.
• A calm, patient, and friendly attitude.
• Confidence driving larger vehicles (minibuses or MPVs) is ideal, but if you prefer to drive cars, we have those opportunities too.

What You’ll Receive:

• Full training and support to help you feel confident in your role.
• Ongoing guidance from our friendly team.
• All expenses fully reimbursed, including travel and fuel costs.
• Access to our fleet of vehicles – no need for your own car.
• A meal allowance if you volunteer for 4 hours or more during a mealtime.
