Volunteer, Volunteer Coordinator Opportunity

Are you a natural leader with a talent for inspiring and organising people? Do you have experience in volunteer management, HR or a strong desire to build a thriving volunteer community from the ground up?

Urban Youth is a new charity being established to provide engaging youth work activities, offer positive mentorship, and create safe spaces where young people can thrive and reach their full potential in London. We're currently in the crucial setup phase, and a strong, well-supported volunteer team will be the heart of our operations.

We're looking for a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator to lead the development and management of our entire volunteer programme. This is a unique, high-impact opportunity to shape how Urban Youth attracts, supports, and empowers the incredible individuals who will drive our mission forward.

What will you do?

In this pivotal role, you'll be responsible for building and nurturing our volunteer community from day one.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Strategy & Development: Working with the Founder and Board of Trustees to develop and implement Urban Youth's comprehensive volunteer strategy, policies, and procedures.

• Recruitment & Onboarding: Leading the full recruitment cycle, from writing compelling role descriptions and promoting opportunities to interviewing candidates and managing the onboarding process, ensuring a positive initial experience.

• Training & Support: Coordinating and, where appropriate, delivering essential training for volunteers (e.g., safeguarding, code of conduct) and ensuring they receive ongoing support and supervision.

• Engagement & Retention: Developing initiatives to recognise, appreciate, and retain volunteers, fostering a strong sense of community and commitment.

• Database Management: Establishing and maintaining an efficient system for volunteer records, hours, training, and communications.

• Safeguarding Compliance: Ensuring all volunteers comply with Urban Youth's safeguarding policies, including managing DBS checks and mandatory training requirements.

• Problem Solving: Acting as the primary point of contact for volunteer queries, feedback, and any issues that may arise.

Who are we looking for?

We need someone who is not only deeply passionate about empowering young people but also brings proven leadership and organisational skills to the table.

You should be:

• Experienced: Ideally, you'll have prior experience in volunteer coordination, HR, project management, or a similar role requiring people management and organisational skills.

• Exceptional Communicator: Able to build rapport with diverse individuals, lead meetings, and communicate clearly and inspiringly, both verbally and in writing.

• Highly Organised: Excellent at managing multiple priorities, systems, and processes with a keen eye for detail.

• Empathetic & Supportive: A genuine desire to support others and create a positive, inclusive environment for all volunteers.

• Proactive & Solutions-Oriented: Able to take initiative, identify challenges, and develop effective solutions independently.

• Committed: Willing to dedicate consistent hours per week (flexible, some tasks can be done remotely, with some in-person involvement for training/events) to establish and grow this crucial function.

Our mission is to provide engaging youth work activities, offer positive mentorship, and create safe spaces where young people can thrive, develop new skills, and reach their full potential.

We are currently in the crucial setup phase and are looking for 2-3 dedicated and independent Volunteer Trustees to join our Founder and our Treasurer help lay the foundations for Urban Youth. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the very start of something special, influencing our strategy, governance, and impact from day one.

What will you do as a Trustee?

As a Trustee, you'll play a vital role in the legal and strategic oversight of Urban Youth.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Establishing Urban Youth: Working closely with the Founder to define our charitable purposes, choose the most suitable legal structure (e.g., CIO), and draft our core governing documents.

• Charity Registration: Guiding Urban Youth through the application process to register with the Charity Commission, ensuring we meet all regulatory requirements.

• Strategic Direction: Contributing to the development of our long-term vision, values, and initial strategic plans to achieve our mission.

• Governance & Compliance: Ensuring Urban Youth operates legally, ethically, and in line with charity law and best practices.

• Financial Oversight (Initial): Providing input on setting up robust financial controls and helping to secure initial funding for essential operations.

Who are we looking for?

We're seeking individuals who are not only passionate about youth work but also bring valuable skills and experience to our founding board.

You should be:

• Committed: Dedicated to Urban Youth's mission and willing to commit time to regular meetings (initially more frequent during setup) and responsibilities.

ThinkForward exists to support young people to create better and brighter futures. We want them to be able to identify, realise and shape their aspirations, and be ready to make a successful transition into work.

Young people experiencing barriers such as challenging relationships, living in low-income households, or growing up in areas with a lack of access to opportunities can be confronted with hurdles. Without the right support, these barriers can lead to a high risk of unemployment and long-term effects on career and life chances.

There are more than 900,000 16-24-year-olds in the UK who are not at school or college, or don’t have a job or training place. Our ambition is to prevent young people becoming one of these statistics. In 2025, we will be supporting more than 1,500 young people.

We are looking for new trustees with skills and experience to:

• help to grow our income and support our development team
• help us raise our profile by turning our strong evidence base into policy and campaigns.

You will help drive the progression of successful evidence-based organisation that makes a positive impact on the lives of young people and their communities. We are looking for those who value the potential of young people, are passionate about their growth and development and understand the challenges that some face. An interest in ThinkForward’s work and approach are essential as well as an ambitious outlook for our future.

You will be well respected, have active networks in philanthropy, fundraising and statutory development or in policy and campaigning which has generated systemic change. You will have a proven track record of working at a senior and strategic level and will understand the governance and risk management requirements of the role.

You will also be keen to act as a representative, spokesperson and cause leader creating and identifying donors and business opportunities for ThinkForward.

At our sanctuary (Finsbury Park, North London) for those in suicidal crisis, we offer a potentially transformative experience with a once-only 4-night stay at our non-medical, family-style house. Through respite, time and space for reflection and compassionate and nurturing care, our Volunteer Befrienders and Lead Befrienders support an opportunity for the revival of hope and resilience.  

Volunteer Befrienders are key to Maytree and work alongside Lead Befrienders to provide an open and containing space for people who are feeling suicidal. Befriending is as it sounds: sitting alongside our guests as a compassionate, confidential, and non-judgemental friend. Through active listening and human warmth our volunteers enable our guests to explore their feelings and their options in their own way and in their own time. This face-to-face support is not therapy; it is about being calm and committed and not afraid of difficult subjects, including suicide.
