We're looking for a Head of Governance and Compliance to work closely with our CEO, Executive Leadership Team and Board of Trustees. This is a vital role at the centre of the organisation, supporting a wide range of influential individuals. The Head of Governance and Compliance will need to adapt to varied working styles and expectations, with the ability to approach all relationships with professionalism, clarity and care.
As Head of Governance and Compliance, you will lead our governance function, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance while enabling effective decision-making. With strong governance experience, sound judgement and the ability to build trust at all levels, you will support effective leadership and accountability across the MND Association.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and continuously develop the governance function, embedding best practices aligned with our strategy and values.
- Act as the primary trusted advisor on governance, risk and regulatory matters to the Chair, Board, CEO and Executive Leadership Team.
- Lead and develop governance frameworks, policies and structures that reflect best practice.
- Oversee planning and delivery of all governance activities, including Board meetings, Committee meetings, and the AGM.
- Provide clear structured agendas, timely papers and accurate minutes to support effective governance meetings.
- Maintain governance records and ensure regulatory compliance with Companies House and the Charity Commission.
- Monitor and report on governance performance, risks and improvement areas.
- Take a leading role in managing and enabling constructive and challenging relationships between the Board, Chair, and ELT.
- Manage trustee recruitment, induction, training and succession planning.
- Oversee the organisation's policy framework and serious complaints process, ensuring appropriate enquiry and learning.
- Lead the development and implementation of the risk management framework in line with Board expectations.
- Stay informed on legal, regulatory and sector developments and advise the organisation on implications.
About You:
- Strong knowledge of UK charity and company law.
- Proven experience working with Boards and senior leaders in a governance role.
- Skilled in developing governance policies, frameworks and risk management processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Good level of financial acumen within a governance role.
- High levels of discretion, judgement and political awareness.
- Able to work independently, make sound decisions and prioritise effectively.
- Collaborative approach with the ability to build strong relationships and influence sensitively.

Role Overview
The role is responsible for delivering comprehensive HR support across the organisation, covering recruitment, onboarding, training, and support for performance management and employee relations. It includes managing volunteer processes and working closely with both internal managers and external HR and payroll providers. The postholder will play a key role in maintaining effective HR systems, ensuring policy compliance, and supporting a positive workplace culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing end-to-end recruitment processes across multi-disciplinary teams; including
- Ongoing development, coordination, and oversight of SCT’s volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, and administration in collaboration with SCT’s managers.
- Working closely with SCT’s outsourced HR support.
- Providing SCT managers with guidance on volunteer recruitment and any management issues.
- Implementing, maintaining and reviewing an annual training plan for all employees.
- Maintaining up-to-date staff files and HR system records including DBS validation, handling confidential employee and volunteer data in line with data protection legislation.
- Supporting employee relations by assisting with complaints, grievances, and disciplinary procedures, including provision of support to managers on all employee-relation matters.
- Working with SCT’s Business Operations Officer to ensure accurate information is provided to SCT’s outsourced payroll administrators to ensure accuracy of all relevant information.
- Supporting the ongoing review, development and improvement of clear, consistent, and accessible policies and procedures across the organisation.
- Working closely with SCT’s managers to promote the ongoing communication, implementation, and participation in the review cycle of policies and procedures.

Person Specification
• CIPD qualified to level 5 or significant HR Management experience will also be considered
• 3+ years demonstrable generalist HR Management experience or similar role types
• Demonstrable experience of working across multiple sites
• Excellent communication skills both in the written form and in person with the ability to adapt to all audiences
• Experience of presenting material and report writing to a range of audiences
Essential Skills and Experience
- Proven experience in managing end-to-end recruitment processes, including onboarding, training, performance management, absence, and leaver procedures.
- Awareness of UK employment law and GDPR, with a willingness to learn and apply policies correctly.
- Understanding of volunteer management, including recruitment, onboarding, training, and administration.
- Experience with outsourced HR support services, providing HR guidance and support to managers, particularly in volunteer and employee management matters.
- Experience in maintaining accurate HR records and handling confidential information in line with data protection legislation.
- Practical knowledge of employee relations processes, including handling complaints, grievances, and disciplinary procedures.
- Familiarity with payroll processes and working collaboratively to ensure accurate payroll data.

The Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Service Manager provides leadership for the outsourced service desk, IT supply and Site Service Engineering functions of the DDaT team and is the point of escalation for all Barnardo's colleagues accessing services, incident management and request fulfilment.
The DDaT Service Manager is responsible for the delivery of exceptional Site Service Engineering at over 1000 sites and responsible for the delivery of IT Supply services to over 7000 colleagues across the UK. The Service Manager also owns and operates the outsourced Service Desk via the current partner relationship, working in collaboration with internal technical teams. The Service Manager will report to the Director of Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) and is a member of the DDaT Leadership Team.
Continuous improvement of services, ownership of the service catalogue entries, effective self-help documentation and assets, are core activities of the role, alongside ensuring the delivery of excellent business as usual services, and ownership of key transformation initiatives. Fiscal management of delegated budgets, accurate forecasting are key success factors of the role.
The post holder will be responsible for engagement with all stakeholders, aligning working practices with the DDaT Operating Model, identifying improvement opportunities and all other similar practices to grow the function.
