Role Summary
The Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) is seeking an enthusiastic and committed individual to serve as Patient Lead. This voluntary leadership role is central to ensuring that the patient voice is embedded in all aspects of CPOC’s work. The Patient Lead will represent patients on the CPOC Board, chair the Patient & Public Engagement Network (PPEN), and guide the team of patient representatives.

Key Responsibilities
• Represent the patient voice at CPOC Board and Executive meetings.
• Chair and lead the Patient & Public Engagement Network (PPEN).
• Develop and deliver the PPEN’s programme of work, focused on improving outcomes for surgical patients before, during, and after surgery.
• Collaborate and build relationships with a diverse range of clinical and non-clinical stakeholders to influence perioperative care policy and practice.
• Champion the views and experiences of underrepresented and marginalised patient groups, ensuring their voices inform perioperative care policy and practice.
• Contribute to strategic planning and decision-making from a patient perspective.
• Participate in bi-weekly virtual leadership meetings and quarterly in-person or virtual board and executive meetings.
• Inspire, support and mentor the patient representatives.

Role Overview:

The Chair will ensure that the board functions effectively, maintains high standards of governance, and that the charity's mission and goals are achieved.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Board Leadership:

   • Lead the board in setting and implementing the charity’s culture, direction, and strategy.

   • Ensure the board operates inclusively and effectively.

   • Chair board meetings, ensuring decisions are made and actions are followed up.

2. Strategic Direction:

   • Guide the development and implementation of the charity’s strategic plan.

3. Oversight and Accountability:

   • Monitor the charity’s activities and ensure high standards of governance.

4. Close Supervision:

   • Ensure that all members of staff have adequate line management and supervision (not necessarily by the Chair as this may be allocated to another trustee).

5. Direct Involvement:

   • Take a hands-on approach to day-to-day operations, as necessary.

   • Assist in tasks typically handled by additional staff due to the charity’s limited resources.

6. Enhanced Communication:

   • Ensure clear and consistent messaging between the board and the staff member.

7. Financial Oversight:

   • Oversee the charity’s finances, possibly taking on some treasurer responsibilities (currently the board has an appointed treasurer and an honorary accountant).

   • Ensure the charity operates within its financial means.

8. Volunteer Coordination:

   • Recruit and manage volunteers to support the charity’s activities as and when appropriate..

9. Policy Development:

   • Ensure the development, implementation and review of policies to ensure effective and legal operation of the charity.

Our partner is a fast-growing charity that prepares young children in rural Ghana and Uganda for school, empowering marginalised mothers to run educational play schemes to improve children’s development and reduce malnutrition.

They are seeking a qualified accountant to join them as Treasurer and oversee all financial aspects of the charity. You will monitor cash flow, income, expenses, and strategic resource management, ensuring sound governance and compliance with charity regulations.

The Treasurer will chair the Finance and Audit Committee, oversee risk management, and guide the preparation of year-end accounts. You will also advise Trustees and help communicate financial information clearly to the Board.

The Board meets quarterly, with the Finance & Audit Committee meeting approximately 10 days beforehand, all online besides an annual in-person meeting in London. The total estimated time commitment required for the role is 1-3 hours per week.
