About the role
Are you passionate about women’s health and the power of communications to advocate, inform, and influence? If so, we have an exciting opportunity to join us as interim Head of Media and Communications.
In this role, you will play a vital part in the RCOG’s mission to improve the lives of women and girls around the world, through the delivery of creative communications campaigns and high-impact media stories. You will promote our guidelines, research and reports to support their use around the world to deliver high quality, safe and compassionate care for women.
Leading our busy press office, you will have opportunities to shape the media agenda on critical women’s health issues and champion the voices of women and girls through creative story-telling. Your social media expertise will ensure we are effectively listening to and engaging our members, partners and the public.
You will enjoy building and managing relationships with stakeholders to deliver opportunities for partnership working – including national health organisations, other Royal Colleges and women’s health charities. You will have excellent strategic judgement and be confident to advise senior College stakeholders on high profile and sensitive issues.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, you will line manage our Senior Media and Communications Officer and work closely with colleagues in our policy, public affairs and marketing teams to help ensure the College’s external affairs work is integrated, coherent and impactful.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of our annual media and communications plan, including priority campaigns in partnership with marketing, policy and public affairs colleagues
- Oversee our busy press office, ensuring we maintain strong media relations and are achieving high impact coverage on College priorities
- Deliver proactive external communications to promote awareness and impact of RCOG programmes, projects and products
- Ensure we are effectively using our social media and digital channels to listen, engage and influence, including production of videos, podcasts and webinars, etc.
- Build strong relationships with partners and stakeholders to gather intelligence and identify partnership opportunities
- Lead on ensuring the RCOG maintains effective communications and media processes, including forward planning tools, media logs, activity summaries, and evaluation reports.
About you
This position is well-suited to an experienced communications professional who is passionate about women’s health, and the role that creative communications and campaigns can play to advocate, inform, and influence.
Requirements:
- Experience leading the development and delivery of integrated communications campaigns Excellent news sense and experience leading a busy press office covering high profile issues
- Ability to lead on and manage sensitive/ emotive/ ethical issues in a sensitive manner
- Creative and technically excellent writing skills
- In-depth experience to use digital channels to listen, engage and share information
- Confident in building partnerships and being a trusted advisor to senior colleagues
- Ability to work independently to meet deadlines, with a proactive and efficient working style

About this key role
Our successful candidate will work collaboratively with senior management to contribute to the implementation of the new income generation strategy – focusing specifically on retention and developing our unrestricted voluntary income from a range of funding streams. We're offering you the opportunity to become the Director of Education of the British Institute of Radiology (BIR), an international membership organisation for everyone working in imaging, radiation oncology and the underlying sciences.
As Director of Education, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the educational direction of the BIR. It's a leadership position which involves overseeing the development of new initiatives, programmes and strategies to enhance the BIR’s educational offerings and outcomes, and the post-holder will be responsible for the strategic focus and financial performance of the BIR Education programme.
We're half way through our new five-year strategy, and the education team plays a key role in helping to ensure the BIR remains financially sustainable, offering education to more people, and helping expand the membership. The role has also recently been recently expanded to include leadership for two important new roles in Communications and Partnerships, and both positions will be responsible for leading and delivering their respective strategies as part of the wider strategy.
Our new Director of Education will be experienced in developing and implementing successful education strategies at senior level, which will include new business development, income generation or building revenue streams, as well as experience of creating, managing and reporting on budgets.
You'll have had experience of educational events as well as the development of online educational activities, such as virtual events, webpages or apps, and you'll be adept at managing projects and working with stakeholders to achieve outcomes. We’re an award-winning charity that runs local learning centres in the heart of communities where the young people we support live. Our centres provide an innovative education programme which includes practical learning support and motivational and confidence-building activities for children and young people aged 7-18. We are looking for a high-calibre candidate to take up a fixed-term, maternity cover role as Centre Leader at our IntoUniversity centre in Brixton. You will have responsibility for running your IntoUniversity centre, including managing your team, planning and delivering the programme, liaising with external stakeholders and meeting IntoUniversity’s targets for delivery. A substantial element of this role is delivering our education programme to children and young people aged 7-18, so you will need to have a genuine passion and enthusiasm for working with young people, including leading a class of 30 from the front, working with small teams of children and providing one-to-one support.

The post-holder will also deliver training on welfare benefits to other organisations and their helpline staff. You will provide a person-centred information, advice, and casework to disabled people with complex needs on cost-of-living support, welfare benefits and to access small grants.
As the lead welfare benefits worker within the organisation, you will work with relevant staff and organisations to provide an accessible welfare benefits service, across the borough, with flexible hours and access routes to meet the needs of the client base i.e., internet, phone, email.

About the role
As the Director for London, you will be accountable to the Chief Operating Officer for the overall strategic direction and performance of the charity in London, contributing to Sustrans-wide strategic development, as a member of Sustrans’ senior leadership team.
Managing 4 direct reports from multi-disciplinary teams across the city, you will manage resources, providing effective, positive leadership to the heads of teams, in order to deliver Sustrans’ strategy and business plan priorities and initiatives across London.
Strengthening our strategic relationships with key organisations and people, such as Transport for London (TfL), local authorities, the Mayor’s Office and politicians, you will positively influence decision-makers in the field of sustainable transport.
You will be responsible for income generation through business development, identifying new areas of funding, guiding your teams to do the same. You will build and manage relationships with key funding bodies and partners in order to secure funds for project delivery and implementation and to help catalyse change in London.
This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans. Candidates should be based in or close to London, with 2-3 days per week in our London Hub, based in Brixton.

About you
You will have set strategic direction previously and have good business acumen and the ability to evidence a collaborative working approach. This will enable you to effectively engage with external stakeholders and influence key decision makers. Internally, your strategy and clear direction will gain confidence from your team, enthusing them and creating a space where they generate innovative ideas, creating a high performing team. As an experienced senior leader you will be able to evidence motivating and managing multi-disciplinary teams.
A skilled communicator, you will be experienced in negotiations; with the ability chair complex meetings and deliver presentations that are engaging to a range of stakeholders, such as politicians, funding bodies and local authorities.
We are looking for someone who is values driven and passionate about advocating for sustainable transport. Our ideal candidate will have significant experience of working with TfL and/or local government in London in sustainable transport, urban development or an associated industry.
