The Role

The role of Superstore Manager involves managing the day-to-day operation of the charity’s first superstore including managing a team of 18 employees consisting of the Deputy Superstore Manager, Department Team Leaders, Superstore Assistants and a team of volunteers, ensuring accurate accounting and handling of assets, delivering high standards of customer service, and adhering to all charity policies and procedures.

You will lead by example and ensure that employees, volunteers, supporters, donors, and customers understand how their contributions are making a difference to the lives of people in Yorkshire and beyond.
 

Specifically, you will be responsible for:

Driving Success in Our Charity Superstore

• Leading on visual merchandising and display to create a welcoming and inspiring shopping experience that reflects our brand and values.
• Ensuring efficient stock management and generation, so our shop floor is full of high-quality, desirable items that attract customers.
• Maintaining impeccable shop standards and ensuring the store layout supports both customer engagement and operational efficiency.
• Managing and being accountable for implementing and complying with agreed shop operating policy and standards including Health and Safety and Trading Standards.
• Building relationships and working closely with wider functions across the charity such as Facilities, Marketing, Volunteer, and social media teams to ensure the plans are fulfilled and executed.

Efficient Stock Management

• Oversee effective stockroom systems to ensure smooth processing and redistribution of donations, including identifying high-value or surplus stock for resale through online marketplaces or other Yorkshire Cancer Research stores.
• Conduct regular stocktakes to maintain accountability and efficiency.

Inspiring and developing a passionate team

• Recruiting, developing, and retaining talent, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
• Conducting regular performance development reviews for paid employees, implementing and supporting personal development and growth.
• Providing necessary training and resources, ensuring the shop is always adequately resourced and prepared to operate seamlessly, even in your absence.
• Having line manager responsibility for the shop management team, working together to ensure there is management and team cover and sufficient volunteers to operate all trading hours.
• Implementing appropriate training and support for all volunteers to ensure they adhere to all guidelines and legislation including Health and Safety and GDPR.
• Ensuring that all charity policies, shop standards and operating procedures are communicated effectively to all volunteers and are maintained and followed consistently.

 Delivering financial excellence

• Data-driven decision-making, using shop performance insights to inform strategies that maximise income and profitability.
• Accurate record keeping of items donated and the amount paid for each item for Gift Aid tax reclaim purposes.
• All shop administration including cash handling and banking functions, ensuring the team work to the highest standard, accurately and on time, always adhering to charity policy and procedures.
• Reviewing weekly sales figures and from these identifying ways to maintain and maximise income, ensuring information is accessible to volunteers so they are kept up to date.
• Working with the Head of Retail and Finance team to set challenging sales budgets and stretch targets that are achievable or exceedable, and drive and motivate your team to achieve and exceed them.

Championing exceptional customer and supporter service

• You’ll create an environment where every supporter and customer feel valued, ensuring:
• Outstanding service across all touchpoints, from the shop floor to the till point, including seamless and secure payment processes.
• Any complaints are managed effectively and efficiently, escalating to Head Office where they cannot be resolved at a local level.

Building Connections and Driving Engagement

• You’ll act as a proactive ambassador for Yorkshire Cancer Research, generating support and income through:
• Engaging with the local community and businesses to secure donations, build partnerships, and promote the charity.
• Maximising the use of community spaces in-store, hosting events that align with our mission while driving additional income and fostering engagement.

Ensuring Compliance and Best Practices

• You’ll uphold the highest standards of compliance, ensuring adherence to Yorkshire Cancer Research policies in:
• Health and safety, safeguarding, and security.
• Administrative procedures and People management policies.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will need:

• To be educated to A Level or equivalent or have experience in a similar role at a similar level.

· To have experience of managing a large and diverse team of people/volunteers including recruitment and development.

· To have previous retail experience in the charity sector.

· To have previous experience with a high-volume Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) retailer is desirable.

· Experience of meeting and exceeding targets within a retail environment.

· Experience of opening a new shop is desirable.

· Experience in managing high-volume retail environments.

• Strong organisational and managerial skills with success in previous roles leading teams.

· A commercial mindset with proven profit and loss management.

· To be creative and forward thinking.

· To be to handle challenging situations with confidence and professionalism, finding solutions and maintaining composure under pressure.

· Confidence with technology, being able to adapt to new systems and processes to support the smooth running of Superstore operations.

Role overview

An exciting opportunity for a creative and highly motivated candidate with strong technical expertise to help increase Global Canopy's impact by making world-leading environmental and financial data more accessible to our key audiences in the finance sector, business and civil society. 

The role will focus on the DEFT Pathway and related products. DEFT is a transparent, easy-to-use framework that maps out practical steps for companies to transition to deforestation-free supply chains. Hosted by best-in-class data platform Forest IQ, DEFT Pathway helps financial institutions to engage effectively with companies on deforestation. 

A key objective is to make the DEFT Pathway data accessible by building user-friendly frontend components. The data is complex and multi-dimensional and will require considerable creativity to communicate in an understandable and compelling way in order to maximise its impact. You will collaborate with designers, researchers and product managers to fulfill these aims.

As a full stack developer, you will also design and implement the backend to allow the data powering the visualisations to be accessed in a secure way. You will work with data engineers and researchers to ensure the database is well-structured and that queries are performant.

The tech team is small, so you will need to operate with a high degree of independence, and will have the opportunity to influence key technical decisions. We are looking for someone who finds this prospect exciting rather than daunting! 

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, these are the things that will matter the most: 

• Excellent full stack web development skills, ideally using python and typescript
• Knowledge of python frameworks for the backend, such as FastAPI, Flask and/or Django
• Knowledge of javascript frameworks for the frontend (preferably React/Next.js), and common data visualisation libraries such as d3
• Experience querying PostgreSQL databases, potentially using SQLAlchemy as an ORM
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS

Essential behavioural competencies: 

• Self-starter, happy working in a small team with a large degree of independence
• A keen eye for quality, and an appreciation of the importance of automated testing
• A desire to follow industry standard software development processes

Desirable:

• 3+ years experience
• Experience using Agile project management methods and appreciation of the benefits of these
• Knowledge of the Corporate Performance domain

Benefits

Salary: £60K full-time equivalent. This role sits within Band C on Global Canopy’s remuneration framework.
Nature of contract: Full time (37.5 hours) or part time (30 hours, 0.8 FTE). Fixed term for 21 months (approximately the end of 2027). We are a flexible employer and welcome candidates wishing to work flexibly.
Base: Our office is in Oxford, UK with flexible home-working arrangements in place.

Chapter One is a dynamic, growing charity with a vision of a world in which all children have the literacy skills needed to thrive. Our mission is to close the reading gap by providing children with one-to-one support at the time they need it most. 

Our unique Online Reading Volunteer programme currently supports around 3,600 children a year. It pairs disadvantaged, struggling five to eight-year old (KS1) readers with reading support volunteers who come from over 170 local and national businesses. The volunteer ask is very focused: readers commit 30 minutes a week to read with a child using a bespoke digital platform for an entire academic year. The results are transformative, boosting children's reading confidence and ability.

We rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities

Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organization that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally. 

Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organizations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe. 

Summary job description

We are currently recruiting a Software Developer (R Shiny) to support our evolving operations, supporting our Global Data Science team. Reporting to the Head of Data Engineering, this is a full-time role with occasional travel (1-2 times per year) to work closely with overseas colleagues, partners, field teams and communities.

The successful candidate will be a motivated, proactive and highly organised individual with strong experience in developing interactive data visualisation tools in R Shiny specifically.

You will focus on creating user-friendly, customisable tools to support decision-making in small-scale fishing communities and across the organisation. These tools, designed by the Design and Integration team, aim to transform complex datasets into actionable insights, supporting data-driven decision-making at various levels.

You will demonstrate a proven track record of presenting complex data in clear, accessible formats for both technical and non-technical audiences, as well as project design and management. Ideally, you will have experience with community-based conservation and development initiatives. You will thrive in environments that are collegiate and ambitious, and be able to demonstrate experience of working independently and solving complex problems in challenging situations.

A new opportunity has arisen to join the Newt Conservation Partnership as NCP Finance Administration Assistant to support our efforts to create and manage high-quality habitat for great crested newts. This is an exciting time to join our team as we expand to maximise our impact for freshwater habitats and species.

Working alongside NCP’s Operations Manager and Administrator, the NCP Finance Administration Assistant will support daily financial tasks, using bookkeeping skills to ensure accurate and efficient data processing. As part of a small but growing team, they will also assist with occasional office administration

Newt Conservation Partnership (NCP) is a community-benefit society whose main purpose is creating and managing high-quality habitat for great crested newts, at the same time providing new habitats for many other wetland plants and animals. Our work is underpinned by a spatial strategy, and we work at the landscape scale. We have an extensive monitoring programme, and generate critical data for assessing the success of the NatureSpace schemes. We work closely with our partners, Amphibian and Reptile Conservation and Freshwater Habitats Trust and follow their evidence-based best practice guidance for the conservation of amphibians and ponds.

Job Purpose:

This role sits within Family for Every Child’s (Family) Sustainability team, providing comprehensive support for all aspects of financial management.  The Finance Officer will work closely with the Secretariat, providing a central support function for the Sustainability, Impact, and Innovation teams.  This role will support the International Finance Manager (IFM) in building an internal finance function and will work with Family’s outsourced financial service provider in the UK to transition support in-house, ensuring efficient income and expenditure processing, reconciliation and reporting.

This role includes study support to become a qualified accountant (ACCA) with the potential for role development linked to successful exam progression. Family offers a study leave policy of 10 days over a rolling 12 month period (pro rata for part time staff).

Scope and Limits of Authority:

The post holder is expected to organise their own day-to-day activities according to the overall priorities and timescales set, and to exercise sound judgement in many critical decision-making areas.

Key Responsibilities:

Finance administration

• Principal point of contact for staff and suppliers (purchasing, expenses and payments).

• Managing and organising the finance inbox, ensuring queries are answered in a timely manner and ensuring good supplier relations are maintained.

• Processing all invoices and expenses onto the accounting system, ensuring correct coding and allocation of costs.

• Preparation of domestic and international payment runs, ensuring international payments are compliant with local requirements and following up on any issues.

• Working closely with the Programme Officer to track the status of grants and ensure outgoing payments are received.

• Managing the prepaid cash cards and monthly sign off of spend, supporting staff with purchases and expenses, checking and updating expense claims prior to processing of payment.

• Bank reconciliations, monitoring bank activity, ensuring invoices/expenses paid by direct debit are processed and approved as required, maintaining supplier details up to date.

• Preparation of monthly journal entries for review and approval by the IFM.

• Acting as the main point of contact for staff to provide guidance on all operational financial policies and procedures.

• Leading on continuous improvement to operational finance processes, including the use of AI technology to streamline processes and improve efficiency.

Payroll

• Preparation of monthly UK payroll.  Working closely with the HR Officer to ensure all adjustments are processed.

• Preparation of monthly UK pension submissions within the required deadline.

• Processing all pension changes, including auto-enrolment and adjustments to contributions.

• Checking calculations for EOR and international payrolls.

• Preparation of monthly payroll allocation journals for review and approval by the IFM.

Financial budgeting and reporting

• Supporting and coordinating the budgeting process with the International Finance Manager and budget holders, updating the budget templates and checking the draft budget for accuracy and completeness.

• Supporting the production of monthly and quarterly financial reports and cash flows, reviewing trial balances prior to accounts consolidation, carrying out income reconciliation  review by the International Finance Manager, and completing sample checks of the financial reports.

• Supporting the preparation of the accounts for the annual audit and financial report

• Supporting the Impact team by reviewing project budgets, re-forecasts and financial reports prepared by members

Income processing and reporting

• Carrying out the income reconciliation between the Bank and Salesforce, working with the Database Officer and Analytics & Process Officer to ensure the necessary adjustments to the database are made.

• Ensuring income recognition is in line with accounting standards and preparing and uploading draft journals for recognition of income to Xero.

• Preparing and completing HMRC Gift Aid submission files, monitoring the Gift Aid debtor balance and receipts from HMRC

• Assisting the IG Finance Manager in administering and reporting on legacy income 

• Carrying out financial analysis and reports as needed for donor reporting, forecasting and financial modeling.

Cross Cover support

• HR:  Managing the monthly payroll process with the outsourced provider including provision of data, and checking reports and calculations, for UK payroll and all international payrolls

• HR: Maintaining day to day liaison with line managers and any outsourced payroll and employment providers (EOR).

• Fundraising:  Assisting the Supporter Care team with income processing, including regular payment processes

• Impact:  Assisting the Programme Officer with purchase orders and grant management as needed to cover periods of leave and heavier workloads (i.e. during events, etc…)

Self management

About the role:

The Advance Prison Advocate will support sentenced women facing imminent release from custody, providing pre-release support; focused on Accommodation, Finance, debt & benefits, Family & significant others and Social inclusion.

The Prison Advocate will develop a referral pathway with the Offender Management team within the prison, for women to access the service and will work in partnership with the existing service providers operating within the prison. You will co-design a person-centred support and action plan with women accessing support, enabling you to support them to address their needs and any risks in relation to the interventions identified above including providing ‘through the gate support’. The role will combine a casework- based approach, along with a signposting and advice service for the women in custody.

You will have demonstrable experience and understanding of working with women in a challenging multi-agency environment, ideally working with prisoners and/or their families.

You will build strong relationships with the Pre Release teams to ensure clients are able to maintain or access suitable accommodation, finance, benefits and debt, family and social inclusion support including negotiating terms on behalf of the women. Ensure that interventions are responsive to and meet the needs of women from diverse and minoritised backgrounds. This, together with referrals to wider partner organisations in the community, will ensure additional support needs are addressed post-release and continuity of support exists

A car may be desirable for this role, though not essential

About You:

To be successful as the Advance Prison Advocate you will need the below experience and skills:

Knowledge and experience of the criminal justice system obtained through academic study, experience of working in the criminal justice system (or closely associated social system).

The ability and experience as a caseworker delivering gender specific and trauma responsive interventions which support resettlement and rehabilitation of female adults in the criminal justice system whether in the community or in prisons.

You will possess excellent organisational skills, excellent communication skills and be able to work in a prison environment whilst remaining calm.

Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of managing a caseload including maintaining and updating records, remaining focused on action plan goals, and keeping to deadlines

You will have the ability to complete trauma informed, support and action plans in collaboration with the woman; to support in addressing their multiple and individual needs and enable them to engage with services, which will result in timely and prescribed outcomes being achieved.
