Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) are recruiting for a Community Activities Coordinator to join our growing, dynamic organisation. This exciting new role will sit within AFRIL's busy Casework and Advocacy Service, working collaboratively with our asylum seeking and recently granted refugee clients to plan and deliver a range of activities, improving wellbeing and community solidarity. 

We are looking for a good people person, able to engage and inspire others, who demonstrates a collaborative approach to working with a range of stakeholders and in particular AFRIL clients who come from a variety of backgrounds. The postholder will be highly organised, have good project planning and execution skills, and a good working knowledge of the issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. Community language skills are an asset.

Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) is a registered charity that supports asylum seekers, refugees, and vulnerable migrants in South East London. We support people to lift themselves out of poverty, assert their rights and rebuild their lives in the heart of our community. AFRIL delivers the following core services in the London Boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich, Southwark, Bexley and Bromley:

• Rainbow Club Supplementary School - providing weekly supplementary education in English and Maths, arts, music and sports activities to children from refugee, migrant  and asylum seeking backgrounds from 4-11 years old, plus youth volunteering programme and Youth Council (NRCSE and Sanctuary Status). 

• Casework and Advocacy Service: providing AQS accredited advice, casework and legal interventions in asylum support, community care, housing, welfare benefits and related matters. Pre-Action Protocol letters to challenge unlawful public law decisions. The service currently provides Level 1 immigration advice under the Immigration Advice Agency.

• Destitution Support - a fortnightly Food Bank in partnership with St Peter’s Church providing food, food vouchers, toiletries, and other essentials, alongside a warm hub with free cafe, information and support. Small grants for essential items and cash payments for food in emergencies. Securing and distributing gifts in kind, e.g. winter coats, laptops and data. 

• Allotment of Refuge - a welcoming community of food growers that supports improved health, wellbeing and integration of members, whilst protecting the local environment. 

• Immigration Project in partnership with Southwark Law Centre, providing free legal advice and representation to support people to regularise their immigration status. 

We also use our frontline experience, together with our clients, to engage in Policy and influencing work to improve the services and policies that impact our client group. This includes advising the GLA on 3 asylum related working groups, and as a member of the London Housing Panel.

The Role

The Head of Partnerships and Fundraising is responsible for the majority of income generation for our charity. The Switch raises income from corporate volunteering partnerships and through grant applications to other trusts and charities, which together contribute circa £800,000 per year. This is a role that requires strategic thinking, relationship and negotiation skills, and the ability to meet income targets.

This role will manage and grow our current key corporate partners, ensuring sustainability and longevity in our partnerships. The person will be responsible for communicating effectively with corporate partners on a strategic level, to understand how we can improve our volunteering offer and communicate impact to their business.

The job-holder will seek new partnerships in diverse industries where we have fewer stakeholders, to ensure our young people work with companies and volunteers from wide-ranging sectors.

In this position you will scope fundraising opportunities from grant and trusts, and be adept at assessing our viability so that applications we submit have a higher rate of success than average.

As Head of Partnerships and Fundraising, you will create new income streams which The Switch has not considered before, for example legacy funding, individual giving, corporate match funding. This will improve our financial stability.

In addition to income generation, this role will lead the Partnerships team and manage two to three staff as follows :

1. Our Corporate Partnerships and Volunteer Manager - oversees all volunteer logistics, including maintaining volunteer records and distributing relevant briefing materials to ensure volunteers are well-prepared for their role. Some time dedicated to fundraising too.

2. Our Communication Coordinator – leads on our regular comms including our digital newsletter, social media pages, and bespoke comms for projects or funders.

3. Coordinator TBC.

Details

· The Head of Partnerships and Fundraising leads the Partnerships Team and reports to the CEO.

· Working hours are typically 9am – 5pm Monday – Thursday, and 9am – 4pm Fridays.

· Working from home (WFH) is typically 2 days a week, with Wednesdays mandatory in the office.

The post holder will be responsible for the following:

• Providing a specialist advice and advocacy service to the homeless guests of our services, which include partner day centres and night shelters through the winter season.

The Dollywood Foundation UK runs Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in the UK, the worlds largest book gifting programme. Over the last 30 years the Imagination Library has delivered nearly 300 million books to children globally. In the UK we support over 60k children a month, delivering them a free book sent to their house every month.

The primary purpose of this new role is to increase registrations for the Imagination Library initially across London. This role will support our Local Programme Partners to reach families with whom they are not currently engaging.

About the role

As an Experienced Practitioner, you will provide direct support and care for our young people who have complex emotional and mental health difficulties (such as trauma and loss) and can struggle to regulate their emotions.

Applicants will ideally already be on the DBS Update Service; if this is not the case St Christopher's will carry out a DBS (police) check prior to starting.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists is a membership organisation and the voice of the profession, with 4,500 members in the UK and overseas. Our role is to champion the specialty, set standards of training and practice, and influence change to make a difference to the lives of patients with eye conditions.

Job purpose

Part of the Policy & Engagement department, the Senior Communications Officer is responsible for devising and supporting strategic communication initiatives that elevate the College’s visibility, advocate for the importance of sustainable ophthalmology services, spotlight our work and values, and promote membership. Working with colleagues, members and external partners, you will craft, execute and evaluate multichannel campaigns, secure profile-raising media coverage, and create engaging content for all our communications channels.

Main responsibilities

Strategic communication planning

• Plan, deliver and evaluate multichannel communications campaigns and plans – working with colleagues across the College to identify objectives, target audiences and key messaging.
• Contribute to developing and implementing communications strategies to increase the College’s profile, promote its work and the importance of ophthalmology, and support membership recruitment and retention.

Content development and management

• Contribute to developing, delivering and evaluating the performance of our content strategy and organisation-wide annual content plan.
• Work with all College departments to develop promotional materials, and to identify and gather content, stories and information for sharing across College media.
• Produce engaging, and accessible content for the College’s member magazine, social media accounts, website and e-newsletters.
• Copyedit, proofread and format publications, and manage the production of printed materials, including liaising with printers, designers, and other external suppliers.
• Help keep the College’s photo library up-to-date, and work with colleagues to commission photographs.

Media relations

• Identify new and nurture existing relationships with editors, journalists, commentators and producers, expanding and updating our contact list.
• Develop and implement a schedule of strategic media engagement, identifying new opportunities upon which the College should capitalise.
• Handle day-to-day proactive and reactive media relations, including acting as the first point of contact for media enquiries; writing and pitching comments, press releases, quotes, and op-eds; arranging interviews; and working with international, national and local media.
• Record, monitor and report on the College’s media activities, coverage and performance.
• Work with the Communications Manager to brief and commission training for College spokespeople.
• Work with colleagues to keep our media lines on priority policy issues up to date.

 Digital communications

• Co-plan, produce and distribute targeted and segmented e-newsletters.
• Develop and implement a social media schedule that is aligned with organisational and departmental objectives, capitalises on external opportunities, reflects the latest trends and best practice, and delivers regular, timely and targeted posts.
• Manage the College’s social media channels day-to-day, producing topical and relevant content, and monitoring and responding to comments and messages.
• Support the Communications Manager in maintaining and managing the College website, including inputting to reviews and our ongoing redevelopment project and content audit.
• Support and train colleagues in using our content management system (CMS).
• Monitor and report on the College’s digital performance monthly.

Brand management

• Uphold the College’s brand identity and messaging across all materials and platforms.
• Help champion and ensure compliance with the College’s brand and style guidelines.
• Support the department in averting and handling communications crises as needed.

 Other

• Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the College
•  Working outside normal hours and/or overnight stays may be necessary to support the delivery of key organisational events.

Person specification

Knowledge, qualifications and experience

• Demonstrable expertise in strategic/corporate communications, with a professional qualification or evidence of learning in communications, public relations, journalism or marketing
• At least three years’ experience of working in a busy communications team, press office or newsroom
• Experience of devising, implementing and evaluating multichannel communications strategies and/or campaigns
• Experience of writing materials for a range of audiences, including blogs, magazine/news articles, newsletters, social media posts and website copy
• Experience of commissioning, editing, and proof-reading copy, ensuring adherence to brand and style guidelines
• Working knowledge of the media and experience of fielding enquiries, and developing briefings and press releases
• Experience of using CMS, website analytics, social media monitoring and scheduling tools, and e-newsletter software

Job Information:

This exciting new role in our award-winning External Affairs Department will fight for the hospice sector and people who need their care and support.

This is a critical time for hospice and end of life care. Hospices across the UK are in the worst financial situation they have faced for 20 years. The funding crisis means hospices are cutting services and making redundancies.

But this is also a time of significant political opportunity. The Assisted Dying Bill has placed palliative care firmly on the agenda. We have recently secured £100m of emergency funding for the sector in England and the 10-year health plan has identified hospices as central to the shift from hospital to community. 

To seize this once in a generation opportunity, we are expanding our UK-wide policy and public affairs team from six to eight, including a new Policy and Public Affairs Manager. 

We are looking for a proactive and driven policy and public affairs professional with excellent influencing and communication skills. You will have your finger on the pulse and have strong policy and political knowledge that enables you to quickly understand and analyse the impact of external developments. 

You will be curious about how best to improve people’s experiences of death, dying and bereavement and strengthen the contribution of the hospice sector to this. As well as collaborative and committed to building coalitions to maximise our impact. 

You will provide leadership but must also be willing to pitch in at all levels to get things done. Excellent project management skills will mean you can identify where our resource is best spent and how to delegate tasks. This exciting new role in our award-winning External Affairs Department will fight for the hospice sector and people who need their care and support.

You will personally lead an impressive and wide ranging portfolio of work. This includes leading the charge on securing long-reform of the way hospices are funded in England and taking the next steps in our UK-wide policy and public affairs work on access to palliative and end of life care for people living in financial hardship. You will also line manage a new Policy and Public Affairs Assistant who will be supporting our team across all four nations of the UK.

Launched in 2024, Making Waves is our flagship one-to-one music-making programme designed for people at risk of offending or those leaving prison. Over 10 sessions, participants work with a professional producer in our private studio to create, record, and release their own music, building confidence and gaining new skills along the way. Alongside music-making, participants can also gain a King’s Trust qualification in Personal Development and Employability Skills, receive tailored mentoring from Trailblazers to support them into employment, and join our alumni programme for live performance opportunities, industry masterclasses, and ongoing support.

The Programme Coordinator is a new role within the Finding Rhythms team. Based on the success of the Making Waves programme over the last year, we now are in the process of expansion - with plans to increase delivery and engage more participants. The Programme Coordinator fulfills an essential role to support successful expansion of the programme whilst maintaining maximum impact for participants and partners.

To be successful in the role, you will be a highly motivated and proactive individual. You will support the day-to-day running of the programme on site, providing administrative support, and being the first point of contact for programme participants. You will have a person-centred approach, empathy and patience, alongside excellent attention to detail and an ability to think ahead. You will be passionate about music’s ability to transform lives.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

REFERRALS AND ON-BOARDING
● Processing a high volume of referrals of participants onto the programme, in a time-effective manner, ensuring all essential information is gathered and recorded
● Communicating regularly with participants and referral partners on the status and timeframe of their place on the programme
● Responding to general enquiries about the programme and distributing relevant information
● Encouraging participants to attend including identifying issues and providing solutions
● Briefing participants in the lead up and throughout the duration of the programme
● Being the on site point of liaison for the programme

PROGRAMME COORDINATION
● Ensuring all relevant paperwork is completed and processed
● Updating the musician and Programme Manager with key information in the lead up to sessions and on the day
● Liaising with partnering organisation Trailblazers Mentors and participants to organise mentoring sessions on-site and online
● Ensuring the studio is clean, tidy, and correctly equipped
● Ensuring studio ‘rules’ are adhered to and sessions run smoothly, flagging any issues to the Programme Manager
● Supporting the Programme Manager with the alumni programme including the organisation of live performance events and industry masterclasses

OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATIONS
● Organising and attending outreach and taster sessions across multiple locations (some of which will take place in prisons)
● Being the main point of contact for participants and alumni, sending reminders and general information about upcoming events
● Supporting on organisation and coordination of Finding Rhythms events
● Taking photographs for social media, sharing ‘success stories’ and case studies

GENERAL
● Ad hoc tasks as required, as Finding Rhythms is a small organisation, flexibility is required in every role so we can help and support each other wherever necessary

You'll combine your passion, organisation and collaboration skills to recruit, train and support hosts, process referrals and make guest placements. 

Hope at Home operates a hosting scheme for survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking in the UK.  We train and support volunteer hosts to welcome a survivor facing homelessness into their homes for an agreed time period.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Recruiting new volunteer hosts using networking and marketing skills including cold calling, following up warm leads and presenting at in person events.
• Supporting hosts with training, host support groups and staying in touch.
• Processing referrals and facilitating guest placements
• Building relationships with partner agencies
