Role Description - Peer Support Group Leader (Voluntary)
Lead safe, welcoming peer-support groups for neurodivergent adults (with a focus on ADHD), building community, confidence and fair access to help.
Key responsibilities

Plan and facilitate group sessions that are calm, inclusive and boundaried.

Welcome participants, set/hold group agreements, and manage dynamics sensitively.

Identify risk, de-escalate where needed, and follow safeguarding procedures.

Signpost to local services and resources; encourage peer-to-peer support.
-
Keep brief attendance/impact notes and handle data in line with GDPR.
-
Liaise on venues, accessibility and materials; ensure spaces are neuro-affirming.

Attend training, supervision and debriefs; contribute to service improvement.
Person specification
-
Compassionate, non-judgemental listener with strong facilitation skills.
-
Confident setting boundaries and managing difficult conversations.
-
Organised, reliable, and comfortable with basic admin/digital tools.
-
Knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) ADHD/neurodiversity and local support.
-
Lived experience of ADHD/neurodivergence or mental health is welcomed.
-
Understanding of safeguarding and confidentiality (training provided).

Enhanced DBS and references required (organisation-funded).
Time & commitment

Approx. 2-4 hours per week (including prep, session and notes).

Minimum 6-month commitment preferred; flexible scheduling.

We are looking for someone like you to facilitate our monthly special interest group for blind and partially sighted people who are interested in these topics and who would like to share their experience with others.
You will contribute to the group to ensure that all participants feel comfortable and that the group runs smoothly.
This group will run monthly either over the telephone or as a video call.

What skills and experience are needed?
- Empathy with blind and partially sighted people. Good listening skills. Experience of working in the building or carpentry trades, or a keen interest in these topics. Ability to work with wide range of people. Ability to use the telephone or video call system to talk to groups of people.
Cadet Group Leaders work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By organising a mixed weekly programme, this role will support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Leaders also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

Shannon Trust fulfils an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.
We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading skills.
Area coordinators support and coordinate a team of prison volunteers. They help recruit and induct new volunteers and are the first point of contact for advice and support. Area coordinators lead and inspire the team via quarterly 1 to 1s and area meetings. They also help oversee the progress of Shannon Trust in prisons in their area and provide cover and support where needed.
We are looking for volunteers who are organised, flexible, able to work independently, and able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years. Due to the nature of the role prison security vetting will be required.
We provide training for the role via e-learning and 5 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.
