The Development and Alumni Office (DARO) exists to support the University of Birmingham's academic and student community by engaging, inspiring, and celebrating alumni, individuals, and charitable funders who give their money, time, and networks to support the University’s strategic priorities. The Office, which is comprised of five teams, is focused on fundraising and volunteering from alumni, organisations and individuals who are passionate about changing lives, through funding various research projects, supporting student bursaries, mentoring students, and providing internships, as well as providing a versatile programme of engagement opportunities for our global alumni community.
This is an exciting opportunity to join DARO as Donor Experience Manager, helping to shape and deliver outstanding donor journeys for multiple audiences. In this role, you’ll play a key part in deepening relationships with our donors and volunteers, ensuring that their experience of supporting beneficiaries is meaningful, personal and impactful.
You will lead on the planning and delivery of our donor experience programme, from tailored communications and impact reports to stewardship and cultivation events, campus visits and administration of our Recognition Circles. With a strong understanding of donor motivations, you’ll create experiences that reflect the transformative impact of philanthropy and build long-term engagement.
You will manage a team of two Donor Experience Officers, setting individual and team objectives while providing day-to-day support, clear direction, and opportunities for professional development. As a team leader, you’ll create a collaborative and high-performing culture, ensuring that workload is prioritised and balanced, deadlines are met, and work is consistently delivered to a high standard. This role sits in the Fundraising team within the Development and Alumni Relations Office.
Working closely with colleagues across Fundraising, Charitable and Corporate Partnerships (Trusts and Foundations), Communications, Events, Data and Supporter Insight and Campaign Management, as well as academics and Professional Services colleagues across the University, you’ll ensure a joined-up approach that puts donors at the heart of our work. You’ll also support the engagement and recognition of volunteers, including bespoke activity for our Alumni Leadership Mentoring Programme members.
We’re looking for a creative and collaborative individual with experience in donor or stakeholder engagement, event delivery, and writing for impact. You’ll bring a strategic mindset, excellent relationship management skills, and a genuine passion for enhancing the donor experience at a leading university.

Meet your Manager
In this role, you will be managed by Emily Thomas. A fundraiser for over fifteen years, Emily has worked at charities including Brooke, National Trust and the Wildlife Trust. Prior to joining ClientEarth in 2018, Emily was part of the development team at London's Natural History Museum where she worked on the Hintze Hall transformation capital campaign and launch activity. As Associate Director, Philanthropy, Emily manages the global philanthropy team and works alongside external stakeholders and a Development Board to secure income and connections for the organisation.

Role requirements
- Significant fundraising management experience in Asia with demonstrable experience of securing five and six figure, and multi year gifts
- Experience in multiple elements of fundraising including identifying and building supporter bases in new geographies and working with different types of fundraising teams (e.g. philanthropic/HNWIs, trusts and foundations)
- Experience of working in a global team, working across multiple time zones and understanding / experience of working in a matrix style
- Experience of working with senior internal and external stakeholders, to build networks, deliver income and raise organisation profiles
- Ability to represent ClientEarth externally to high value funders and other senior stakeholders.

The Roundhouse is a world-renowned music and arts venue in Camden and a registered charity supporting over 10,000 young people aged 11–30 each year.
Through creative programmes, studio access, mentoring, and professional development, it empowers young people to build skills, grow their confidence, and pursue careers in the creative industries. From its iconic main space, to our state-of-the-art Creative Studios open to musicians, filmmakers, podcasters and performers aged 13-25, to the newly opened Roundhouse Works, a dedicated creative centre for 18–30 year olds – Roundhouse offers the space, support, and resources to help young people thrive.
The Roundhouse’s 13-person fundraising team has recently increased its ambitious annual target, largely driven by strong performance from the Trusts and Statutory team. Operating within a successful mixed economy model, the charity benefits from a diverse range of income sources – including ticket sales, commercial hires, and an increasingly ambitious programme of grants and philanthropy.
Trusts and statutory funding is a core part of this model. This year’s £600k Trusts target has almost been met, supported by a strong pipeline, multi-year relationships, and a wide portfolio of fundable work across employability, wellbeing, and diversity. The postholder will also be responsible for Arts Council England reporting.
With programmes closely aligned to youth sector priorities and policy initiatives, this role offers the opportunity to build on solid foundations and contribute to the organisation’s next phase of growth.
As Senior Trusts and Statutory Manager, you will:
- Lead and manage a successful team (Trusts and Statutory Manager and Coordinator), delivering and growing the team’s £600k annual income target
- Develop and maintain a strong pipeline of trust and statutory prospects by crafting compelling proposals, narratives, and packages of support
- Steward key long-term funder relationships, including Arts Council England, and take responsibility for accurate reporting and statutory funding compliance
- Identify and shape new funding opportunities across a broad portfolio, including youth employability, mental health, creative skills, and inclusion
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across Fundraising, Programmes, and Evaluation to ensure projects are designed with purpose, evidence, and impact
- Represent Roundhouse confidently and professionally in meetings with trustees, funders, and senior stakeholders
Ideal skills and experience:
- Proven success in securing high five- or six-figure grants from trusts, foundations, or statutory funders
- Strong track record of creatively packaging compelling cases for support that align funder interests with organisational priorities
- Experience managing and growing funder relationships with a strategic and entrepreneurial approach
- Experience managing teams (formal or dotted-line) with a collaborative and supportive leadership style
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a skilled storyteller capable of crafting persuasive funding proposals and impactful reports
- Confidence engaging with senior stakeholders, including board members, funders, and programme leads
- Experience in youth sectors is desirable, as is familiarity with funders such as Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Garfield Weston, and bigger strategic funders

ROLE PURPOSE:
The Director of Fundraising and Communications is a member of the Executive Team. This is ShelterBox's most senior management team, with overall responsibility for leading, planning and managing the work and development of ShelterBox.
You will be responsible for the delivery of our current 5 year organisational strategy 2022-27 as well as the implementation of the departmental Fundraising and Communications strategy, driving continued ambitious growth in our reach, engagement and fundraising. You will also play a leading role in driving the development of the next 5-year strategy for 2027 onwards.
You will work with the wider organisation and stakeholders to represent Fundraising and Communications and ensure the team are supported and able to thrive.
This is a role for a dynamic senior fundraising and communications specialist, who will bring significant experience within the sector. Working collaboratively across the organisation, you will develop and implement a strategy that builds foundations for growth and drives a bold and confident ShelterBox of the future. You will take full accountability for the successful delivery of income forecasts and expenditure budgets. You will work with the team to deliver best in class communications across our channels, reach new audiences and grow unrestricted income through digital and offline acquisition, oversee the strategic growth of our philanthropy and partnerships programme, support our strategic partnership with Rotary, and ensure that the ShelterBox brand is optimised to ensure we stand out in a crowded market.
You will also be responsible for understanding the needs and ambitions of the ShelterBox network of affiliates (in Europe, North America and Australasia), seeking to understand the strategies and tactics that will drive global income growth. You will recommend where investments by ShelterBox Trust can support global fundraising into the future.
You will be a proven, highly effective communicator with an empowering management style and the ability to quickly build relationships. A personal desire to invest in your teams with limited resources is essential. Creativity, commitment and best practice implementation are key.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are seeking a highly experienced fundraising and communications expert, who has a passion for storytelling and building impactful relationships. You must be able to hit the ground running, have a strong record of developing and leading successful teams by building highly effective relationships. This role is all about inspiring leadership, strategic innovation, and maximising every opportunity to grow our vital work.
Experience and understanding of the humanitarian sector is desirable, as is an understanding of current fundraising opportunities and challenges, ethical storytelling and communication trends. This includes an understanding of the competitive fundraising environment in the sector, following announcements by some government donors. The need for emergency shelter around the world is vast and growing daily. This role must understand and drive ambitious and effective ways to communicate our specialist focus on shelter and the tangibility of our offer to current and future supporters.
The role will support the Fundraising and Communications department to deliver 2025/2026 plans, as well as implement the longer-term fundraising and communications strategy, seizing all opportunities in an ever-changing landscape.
As well as leading the UK team, working with colleagues from different countries to grow international fundraising, requires excellent communication skills and a commitment to a long-term diplomatic approach.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for the wider cultural context that affects our supporter's lives and behaviours. You will be results oriented and be confident using data and insight to inform decision making and drive our fundraising to the next level. As part of the Executive Team:
- Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of ShelterBox's Strategy 2022-27 as well as play a leading role in developing the next organisational 5 year strategy.

- Direct all fundraising and communication activities to achieve strategic goals, in line with our vision, mission and values.

As Director of Fundraising & Communications:
- Provide inspiring leadership and direction for the Fundraising & Communications department's multi-disciplinary team, ensuring ongoing development and implementation of our strategy to see continued ambitious growth in our income and profile.
- Drive and mentor a high-performing team, fostering a culture of collaboration, setting clear expectations, providing ongoing support and ensuring that teams are aligned with the strategy and our vision, mission and values.
- Ensure we grow the profile and influence of ShelterBox through the delivery of compelling fundraising and communications strategies to increase our supporter base and income.
- Line manage the FundComms SLT: Deputy Director of Fundraising and Communications, Head of Global Comms and Digital, Head of Global Brand and Content, Head of Fundraising Operations, Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships.
- Embed a culture of data and insight driven decision making, innovation and collaboration.
- Build strategic relationships with internal stakeholders to support collaboration, integrated planning and effective delivery of fundraising and communications activities.
- Be accountable for budgets and the best use of financial resources within the department, ensuring all budget and procurement processes are effectively implemented.

- Represent and act as an ambassador for ShelterBox externally, including with strategic partners like Rotary, and our community of incredible supporters. This includes taking part in media interviews to promote our work to a wide audience.
- Work closely across the department and affiliate teams to deepen understanding of our audiences, using data and sector insights to better target and grow these audience groups and increase lifetime value.
- Keep up to date with sector trends and developments, and particularly work with the CEO office to build networking and profile-building opportunities.

- Actively demonstrate the importance of staff development in line with ShelterBox's policies and procedures, for example by undertaking regular 1:1 meetings with direct reports and investing in performance management.

The Museum is looking for an ambitious and self-motivated individual for the role of Legacy Manager.
