We are seeking an employment law adviser to fill the post of National Officer Employment Law. As a professionally qualified Solicitor or Legal Executive with 2 years post-qualified experience you will lead our legal team and provide professional legal advice on employment law matters. Successful candidates for the National Officer Employment Law will be able to demonstrate:

Main duties and responsibilities

1.Key areas

• Conduct legal research into past cases and documents
• Draft and prepare claims or other legal documents
• Provide legal advice to SMT, NEC, members
• Negotiate settlements on behalf of PCS members
• Keep up to date with new developments in employment legislation
• Provide employment law briefings to PCS staff about changes in employment legislation
• Advise members and Reps on wrongful termination and unfair dismissal claims, including reviewing dismissal procedures and advocating for members' rights
• Assist members and reps in cases of workplace discrimination, harassment, or retaliation based on factors such as age, gender, race, disability, or other protected characteristics
• Contribute to the development of the Unions policy objectives including the PCS planning process
• Provide leadership in delivering the unions Legal and Employment Rights strategy
• Provide support and have direct involvement through the National Management Team (NMT) in the unions bargaining, organising, campaigning, equality, learning and digital agendas
• Manage people and resources in the Legal and Employment Rights Unit
• Provide advice to relevant committees including the preparation and presentation of reports

2.People Management

• Manage work allocation and workflow, future planning and support for officer team/line manager

My Life Films is seeking a Finance Manager to ensure the organisation is compliant with all statutory and regulatory requirements with regards to the main charity and its subsidiary. The post-holder is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective management of the organisation’s finances, including accurate reporting and maintenance and development of financial systems and processes that are fit for purpose.

The BMA is the trade union and professional body for doctors in the UK.  They represent, support and negotiate on behalf of all UK doctors and medical students.

Reporting into the Group Financial Controller, the Group VAT Accountant will be responsible for ensuring that the BMA Group (BMA and BMJPG) properly accounts for VAT and meets their statutory return, including overseas equivalents. You will proactively ensure that the finance systems and internal processes across the group are compliant and will manage relationships with external advisors and HMRC, as the organisation’s VAT Subject Matter Expert.

Scope of role

The post holder will undertake casework, assisting clients to access their entitlements to welfare benefits and other sources of financial help. Advice will be delivered through a range of channels, including face-to-face, telephone, email, and other means, provide Welfare Benefits advice and information to people living with cancer and their families.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Case work

• Provide a full welfare benefits casework service for people affected by cancer. This includes disability benefits and other sources of financial support, such as grants and help with health and travel costs.

Welfare Benefit Appeals

• Assist clients to prepare for benefits appeals, research, and the draft was written legal submissions, and provide representation at tribunals as required.

Outreach

• Alongside other team members provide advice sessions through outreach, including at hospitals - currently St Bartholomews, Homerton, Royal London, Newham, and Whipps Cross; and at Toynbee Hall through telephone, email, and any other channel

Targets

• Meet targets as set with the line manager, which will change regularly depending on the needs of the services.

Quality Standard

• Ensure consistent quality assured advice, to AQS standard, monitored by checking casework and observations
• Maintain thorough and detailed case records for continuity of casework, information retrieval, statistical monitoring, and report preparation
• Use all relevant case management systems, such as Advice Pro, as well as Microsoft Office applications, for statistical recording, record keeping, and document production. Ensure all work conforms to Toynbee Hall’s systems and procedures.
• Along with the rest of the team ensure stocks of leaflets, posters, and stationary, are ordered from suppliers and distributed to outreach locations

• Support Macmillan Toynbee Hall Welfare Rights Advice Service’s social policy work by providing case studies and feedback on issues of concern to people affected by cancer; including attending internal and appropriate external meetings, and identifying and acting upon social policy issues

Essential Criteria:

• Strong interpersonal skills
• Recent Welfare Benefits advice work experience, particularly in the areas of health and disability, with at least one year’s specialist welfare benefits casework experience.
• Ability to write detailed accurate case records and drafts, letters reports, and statements in plain English.
• Recent experiences of working in a performance-driven environment and evidence of meeting targets set.
• An ordered and disciplined approach to managing a challenging caseload, meeting targets; planning and prioritising work in the face of competing demands on your time.
• Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with clients suffering from health problems in a professional but empathetic manner, and the ability to respond sensitively to clients.

WorkWell is an exciting new government/DWP initiative to get people back to work. As well as providing work placement support, it will also address and support any physical or mental health needs via a Mental Health Provider and Physical Health Advisor who form part of the team. The pilot in Surrey went live in December and aims to empower people to take control of their health, wellbeing and any impacts this is having on their employment via referral to a WorkWell Coach. That’s where you come in.

Working as a key part of the primary care network (PCN) and other community hubs, your challenge will be to provide a supportive environment that enables each individual to identify their health and wellbeing concerns and the impact these are having on their employment. That will involve taking a strengths-based approach, focusing on ‘what matters to me’ and, together with the individual, producing a personalised and holistic support plan that aims to help the individual thrive at work. We’ll also rely on you to work alongside a multi-disciplinary team of physical activity, mental health and skills and employment advisors to provide direct interventions and connect individuals to diverse community-based support, thus ensuring they are able to maintain their health, wellbeing and employment in the longer term.

To succeed, you’ll need a good understanding of motivational coaching and interview skills, the ability to organise, plan and prioritise and a real commitment to develop. Familiar with office IT systems, you have good word processing skills and know how to use emails and the internet to create simple plans and reports. Just as important is a proactive and flexible approach plus the ability to listen to, and empathise with, people from all backgrounds and provide person centred support in a non-judgemental way. Put simply, you’re committed to reducing health inequalities and able to support people in a way that inspires trust and confidence, thus motivating others to reach their potential.

IKWRO –Women’s Rights Organisation (IKWRO) is an award-winning charity founded (as the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation) in 2002. As testament to its’ success and in response to huge need, IKWRO has expanded and now provides unique and vital support for women and girls from all Middle Eastern, North African and Afghan (MENA) communities who are at risk of “honour” based violence, child marriage, forced marriage, female genital mutilation, domestic violence, sexual violence and other forms of gender violence.  

IKWRO provides direct services including advocacy and professional counselling. IKWRO opened the UK’s first specialist Middle Eastern women’s refuge. IKWRO is regularly called upon to share expertise with government, academics, and media and to train professionals from bodies such as the police, social services and schools.  

IKWRO has led the recognition of “honour” based abuse and “honour” killing as forms of violence against women and girls. Campaign successes include; the first extradition from Kurdistan-Iraq to the UK of perpetrators of “honour” killing of Banaz Mahmod, the UK’s criminalisation of forced marriage, child marriage, virginity testing and hymenoplasty, as well as the first ever national inspection of policing of “honour” based violence. 

The post-holder will help Arabic speaking women who have experienced Forced Marriage, Female Genital Mutilation and “Honour” Based Violence. Working in a confidential setting, counsellors listen attentively to their clients and offer them the time, empathy and respect they need to express their own feelings, to help them overcome their problems and to make appropriate changes to their life.

The post holder must be BACP or UKCP accredited (or equivalent e.g. HCPC) or training to achieve these accreditation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
