The Communications Planning Manager leads the organisation’s internal and external communication planning and is the key partner and first point of contact for colleagues briefing in marketing and communication activities.
You’ll lead the organisation’s internal and external communications planning, including an organisation wide communications calendar. You’ll work with colleagues to define their goals, understand their audiences, develop a great communications brief and then help deliver their campaign by coordinating resources and expertise from across the Marketing and Communications team. The projects are varied and you’ll work across fundraising, campaigning, policy and influencing, research, patient services, healthcare professionals and corporate partnerships. You’ll also lead how we communicate with our own internal staff team.
Equally comfortable working with internal and external audiences, you’ll be a strategic thinker and a communications all-rounder. With an understanding of how press and PR, social media, web, email, brand, content and internal communications all contribute to a great communications campaign. You’ll have excellent communication planning skills and a talent for building relationships with colleagues and partners at all levels.

Black Thrive Global (BTG) evolved from the work of the Black Thrive Lambeth Partnership, established in 2016. We exist to address the inequalities that negatively impact the mental health and well-being of Black people so that the thriving of Black communities is the norm.

Purpose of the role
We are looking for an experienced and creative Communications Manager to take on a key role in our rapidly growing organisation. As Communications Manager, you will lead all aspects of our communications and marketing activity with key stakeholders and with the general public. You will be developing and implementing the organisational Communications Strategy which will increase our profile as an organisation, maximise our reach and impact, and raise awareness of the vison, mission and aims of Black Thrive Global.
Working closely with the Directors, the CEO and the staff, you will create a compelling, coherent and consistent narrative that joins up all our communication channels, key messaging around core BTG work, and plan strategically for key dates linked to activities and events corelated with our aims and mission. To do this, you will work with staff across our organisation and with the communities we represent to increase our engagement with the general public and key stakeholders. Our communications will be both reactive and proactive and the post holder will provide quick responses to emerging media stories.
Duties and responsibilities
- Oversee Black Thrive’s communication activity, co-ordinating that activity and planning for all communications channels, including website, social media and external newsletters. This role includes marketing Black Thrive to different audiences to raise the profile of the organisation in support of its strategic aims.

Deal proactively with media enquiries, maintain the media database and log enquiries, monitor media coverage.
- Implement effective external communications strategy to develop a consistent and coherent narrative for Black Thrive; amplify and support the work of the organisation among the general public, potential strategic partners (including but not exclusive to academics, community partners and local decision-making bodies); and provide clear goals around communication and brand awareness.

Evaluate and monitor communications activity – developing KPI’s in line with our Communications Strategy, and ensuring the information is used to build on success and to develop strategy and outputs.

As Head of Development you will:

Starlight is the national charity transforming children’s health through play. We work
to ensure that every child can benefit from the incredible power of play, supporting
their mental and physical health during treatment and recovery from illness.
Play is not just a ‘nice to have’, without play, children can experience short, and
long-term problems. In fact, it’s so important, that being able to engage in play is
one of the human rights listed in the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Without play, problems faced can range from anxiety around having blood tests
which could mean appointments being abandoned and rescheduled, to developing
PTSD and a fear around visiting hospitals and healthcare settings. It’s not
uncommon for health play specialists to have to meet children in the car park as
they are too scared to even set foot inside the hospital.
Each year, there are nearly 1.8 million child hospital admissions in the UK and
nearly three-quarters (71%) of NHS trusts and health boards do not have any
budget for play.
This is simply not good enough; we think that play in healthcare is non-negotiable.
Driven by our research and insights into what works best for them, we provide direct
services and resources for children and their families; and to the health
professionals working with them. We also advocate for more and better health play
services in public policy; and promote the full recognition of health play practitioners
as an integral component of the children’s health workforce.
Our Health Play Services Delivery team provide physical and digital materials and
resources which support the delivery of health play to practitioners and families.
These are informed by insight, evidence and evaluation from our Insight and Impact
Team.
Central to these materials and resources is our range of Boxes which contain toys
and activities specifically selected to help children relax, distract, and engage to
ensure their treatment can be carried out as quickly and effectively as possible with
minimal stress.
The current Health Play Services Delivery Manager is about to be seconded to a
new Commercial Development role, initially for 6-months, as we shape the
development of a new source of income for Starlight through paid for services.
There may be the possibility of an extension to this contract depending upon the
outcome of the secondment.
The Health Play Services Delivery Manager, reporting to our Head of Play leads the
end-to-end process of our services. You’ll need experience in the operational
management of service delivery and experience of working with the NHS and in
children’s services would be an advantage. You’ll work across all areas from
procurement through stock control to the logistics of delivery and you’ll build
relationships internally and externally to ensure efficient, effective, high quality
service delivery and excellent customer relationship management. Reporting
directly to the Head of Play, you’ll manage the Service Delivery Co-ordinator and
the Service Data Officer within the Hospital Services Team.

The Head of Corporate Partnerships is a key leadership role within the Income and Engagement Directorate. Breaking Barriers’ relationship with corporate partners is the USP upon which our growth and success as an organisation has been built. As Breaking Barriers has grown from a start-up organisation to a now 60-strong team raising c. £4m and supporting more than 1,200 refugees annually, our corporate partnerships have expanded beyond our original London base to be nationwide partnerships with a wide range of businesses and employers. Our corporate partners have been crucial in enabling our growth and will be crucial to delivering upon the ambition of our 2030 goals. The Head of Corporate Partnerships is an essential role that will make this ambition a reality.
You will lead a team to deliver outstanding partnerships management of a range of strategic and multi-faceted relationships with a portfolio of c.50 businesses alongside leading strategy for business development. Leading by example you will own a number of our key relationships to drive growth, whilst bringing your experience to bear to coach your team and ensure structures and processes are in place to enable high performance.
You will be:
- a creative and strategic thinker who doesn’t feel bound by traditional approaches to charity / corporate relationships,
- a keen collaborator, working closely with colleagues in our Services directorate to deliver high impact employability programmes for our refugee clients, and with the Head of Philanthropy and Head of Public Engagement to identify and drive cross-fundraising opportunities,
- an outstanding communicator, comfortable and confident in your ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders across the worlds of CSR, DEI and employability, and across the private, public, and third sectors representing Breaking Barriers at a senior level.
The Head of Corporate Partnerships will be part of Breaking Barriers’ Joint Leadership Team and will have overall strategic and budget responsibility for Corporate Partnerships. They will be a visible leader within the Income and Engagement Directorate and across the organisation, and will contribute to a culture of creativity, growth, innovation and entrepreneurialism that will drive us to achieve our 2030 goals.
