A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Director of Finance and Services with a Christian membership charity, on a full-time, permanent basis. As Director of Finance and Services, you will play a critical role in enabling the necessary resource and support to colleagues to deliver, and also provide advice and guidance as required to the volunteer leaders, including the Board of Trustees, and ensure that the charity operates within its means and in compliance with the laws of England and Wales.

As Director of Finance and Services, you will:

- Have responsibility for all financial aspects of the charity

- Lead a Team of 5-6

- Lead on strategic and operational planning for the organisation, ensuring effective forecasting, budgeting, reporting and risk management

- Provide appropriate advice to the volunteer Boards of over 60 affiliated local charities in Britain and Ireland, and on an as-needs basis with Provinces worldwide, to ensure compliance with statutory requirements

- Have oversight of IT strategy and implementation

- Provide organisational leadership as part of the Senior Leadership Team

The successful applicant will:

- Have significant demonstrable experience in finance within the charity sector, in a similar role

- Be fully qualified (ACCA, CIMA, ACA etc)

- Have good working knowledge of the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP)

- Have experience of planning and implementation of process improvement or change programmes

- Have significant demonstrable experience of working at senior level (with Board contribution), contributing and leading on an organisation’s strategic plans

With a focus on Northern Ireland, you'll lead regional initiatives, tailoring them to local needs and supporting teachers through workshops and online sessions. • An understanding of school level, further and higher education and a breadth of knowledge of the education systems in the UK and Ireland together with a deep knowledge of the local curricula.
• Experience of stakeholder relationship management and an understanding of customer requirements, including those of: school teachers; FE teachers, HE academics and support staff; careers advisors; employers; governments and its agencies, and non-government bodies.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a proven ability to write effectively for different audiences and deliver clear and engaging presentations both online and in-person.

Job purpose

Part of the Policy & Engagement department, the Senior Communications Officer is responsible for devising and supporting strategic communication initiatives that elevate the College’s visibility, advocate for the importance of sustainable ophthalmology services, spotlight our work and values, and promote membership. Working with colleagues, members and external partners, you will craft, execute and evaluate multichannel campaigns, secure profile-raising media coverage, and create engaging content for all our communications channels.

Main responsibilities

Strategic communication planning

• Plan, deliver and evaluate multichannel communications campaigns and plans – working with colleagues across the College to identify objectives, target audiences and key messaging.
• Contribute to developing and implementing communications strategies to increase the College’s profile, promote its work and the importance of ophthalmology, and support membership recruitment and retention.

Content development and management

The role 

Sustrans is the UK’s leading active travel organisation, working to make it possible for people across society to walk, wheel and cycle.  We have a new strategy for the next five years, a key strand of which is to unlock active travel in new housing developments, and we are recruiting a Head of New Developments to lead this work.

This is a new position in which you will draw on your experience in the housing delivery sector to grow Sustrans’ contribution to the creation of new communities that have active mobility at their heart.  As well as leading our influencing work aimed at organisations in housing delivery, you will develop and promote an offer to partners, drawing on Sustrans’ existing infrastructure, behaviour change and advisory services.  You will connect with, inform and inspire professionals and decision makers involved in delivering new homes to adopt the actions required to increase active travel in their developments.  Through collaboration with our Commercial team and subject experts across Sustrans, you will develop a pipeline of funded work from public, private and third sector organisations, ultimately enabling more households to walk, wheel or cycle for their day-to-day journeys.

The role can be based in any Sustrans office and will involve frequent in-person meetings and site visits, particularly (but not exclusively) in the Midlands and South of England. 

About you 

You’ll have significant experience contributing to the delivery of new developments through work for or with organisations such as developers, housing providers, consultancies, local authorities or government.  We’re looking for applicants with a professional network in housing delivery, and significant experience securing new commissions from and/or influencing organisations involved in delivering new developments.  You’ll have a strong understanding of the development process, including the spatial planning system, and of the roles of the parties involved in delivering new developments, the power dynamics between them, and the opportunities and appetite each has for taking action to increase active travel.  Naturally, you’ll have deep knowledge of the challenges, opportunities and hot topics in housing delivery – for new towns, urban extensions and urban intensification schemes.

You’ll have exceptional external-facing leadership skills, and be a strategic, creative thinker, able to solve problems and convert new ideas into practical actions.  Your outstanding communication skills will enable you to engage with stakeholders at a senior level, including on contentious subjects and on high-profile projects.  You’ll have strong business acumen to secure new commissions and deliver effectively for clients, and the skills to influence decision-makers.

You’ll have experience of engaging meaningfully with communities to ensure that new developments respond to the challenges and aspirations of local residents and stakeholders.  And you’ll have good knowledge of how active travel can be embedded into new developments to maximise the number of routine journeys that are walked, wheeled or cycled.

The role:

• Responsibility for all aspects of the financial management of Greenpeace Environmental Trust (GET), a registered charity.
• Responsibility for the preparation of annual statutory accounts, annual report, and conducting the annual audit.
• Work with the Events team to ensure that the budgeting, financial control and management, and reporting of the Glastonbury Festival and all other festivals and events is conducted in an accurate and timely manner.
• Preparation of the annual budget and presentation to the board of trustees.
• Preparation of monthly management accounts and written finance report to trustees and other key stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate cash flow management and forecasting procedures to proactively manage all cash balances.

The successful candidate will:

• Be a qualified, or a finalist Accountant (ACCA/ACA/CIMA or other chartered accountancy qualification) or will be qualified by experience.
  • Proven experience of working in a finance function in a hands-on role.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of accounting principles and best practice, with reference to specific UK charity accounting rules and regulations.
  • Substantial experience of management accounting, budgeting, forecasting and reporting.
  • Experience of involvement in financial year-end and annual statutory audit.
  • Proven experience of delivering a business partnering-focused service and providing in-depth insight, analysis and guidance to budget-holders.
• Support and believe in the aims of Greenpeace.
• Have highly developed communication skills with credibility to operate outside the finance function up to senior management level.

About the role

The post-holder will provide independent advocacy in various settings, including in the community, people’s homes, and hospital settings including mental health wards. You’ll raise awareness of advocacy, including for people from minority ethnic communities. You’ll work as part of a team of independent advocates, reporting to the Advocacy Service Manager. 

You will work as part of the Ealing advocacy team. You may also need to carry out your role in other London boroughs.

Under the Health and Social Care Act 2008, the post holder will be required to visit CQC registered care homes and would be subject to government requirements.

Key responsibilities

î  Provide advocacy for eligible people under Mental Health Act 2007, the Health and Social Care Act 2012, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and under the Care Act 2014.
