Successful applicants will be invited to an interview between 26 January and 6 February 2026. This is an opportunity for you to meet our regional team, to find out more about you and for us to share more information about the volunteering role.

Training:

You'll be given high quality training to prepare you for volunteering with Shannon Trust. This takes place over 4 training sessions and via our online training portal. We ask that volunteers aim to complete the training in one course as this means that you will be ready to start actively volunteering. • Supporting with the planning of, and attendance at, celebration events
• Collecting and sharing good news stories and feedback
• Attending area meetings and sharing good practice with other volunteers
• Engaging with quarterly reviews to receive support and discuss progress
• Acting as an ambassador for Shannon Trust in all that you do, sharing the vision and values of the charity throughout your volunteering

The London Prisons Mission is an independent charity that supports and assists multi-faith Prison Chaplaincy teams; enables volunteers to work with those in prison and leaving prison; and to inform congregations about prisoners, their families, prison staff, victims of crime and issues concerning the criminal justice system.

The Mission has gone through a period of transition and we are looking to refresh the charity’s structures and activities to make it a more effective organisation for those we seek to serve.

The Chair of the Mission will direct this work and work with the LPM support group and the trustees to ensure that the Mission can fulfil its objectives. 
 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer Support and Recruitment:

• Refreshing the leadership structure of the Mission through the recruitment of new trustees to oversee our work
• Identify potential volunteering opportunities for interested members of church congregations (provided proper training and support is in place)

External Networking:

• Meet representatives of national organisations and prison reform groups to discuss volunteer opportunities and information sharing

Staying Informed:

• Keep up to date with developments in the criminal justice system (CJS), including reports from HM Inspectorates

Communication:

• Meet every two months with LPM support group. Share relevant information with management teams, chaplaincy teams (of all faiths), and partner churches

Relationship Building:

• Maintain contact with managing chaplains of partner prisons.
• Initiate contact with prisons which LPM might work with in the future and co-ordinate prison visits for the LPM support group

Church Engagement:

• Communicate regularly with partner churches to promote prison-related awareness and engagement within congregations

Events and Public Engagement:

• Lead on organisation of events like prisoner art shows and activities around Prisons Week
• Encourage faith communities to be more active in CJS issues

 You will work with the London Prisons Mission support group on all of the above, but will be expected to take a lead on all these responsibilities delegating where necessary

Fine Cell Work (FCW) is a UK-based rehabilitation charity and social enterprise. We are supported by an incredible team of prison volunteers who are the link between the charity and the stitchers we work with in prison. Our volunteers run fortnightly stitching groups in the prisons we work with to facilitate our stitchers’ production of high-quality needlework.

Our prison volunteers work in small teams to teach our stitchers’ embroidery and needlepoint, organise their group sessions, and liaise with the prison and FCW office.

What you will do as a prison volunteer:

• Teach people in prison how to stitch and support the completion of our premade kits in our cell groups, which consist of around 10-15 stitchers.
• Communicate with staff at our hub in Battersea to receive kits and supplies for your group and send back completed work for your stitchers to be paid.
• Encourage and help stitchers to complete our Open College Network certifications in creative needlework.
• Develop stitchers’ skills and confidence by encouraging them to take responsibility as peer mentors.
• Act as an ambassador for the charity and sharing our vision and values throughout your volunteering.

Who we are looking for:

• Skills in embroidery and/or needlepoint or a willingness to learn to stitch is essential for this role.
• Ideally some teaching experience or experience working with socially-excluded groups.
• Someone with a non-judgemental attitude and commitment to rehabilitation.
• Someone who is an excellent team worker.
• Someone who is good at observing personal boundaries.

Commitment: our stitching groups run for 2 hours every fortnight, so with travel time and some admin work after groups we ask prison volunteers to set aside a morning or afternoon every 2 weeks.

You must be over 18 for this role with the ability to travel to the prison. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by the charity.

Area coordinators support and coordinate a team of prison volunteers. They help recruit and induct new volunteers and are the first point of contact for advice and support. Area coordinators lead and inspire the team via quarterly 1 to 1s and area meetings.  They also help oversee the progress of Shannon Trust in prisons in their area and provide cover and support where needed.

We are looking for volunteers who are organised, flexible, able to work independently, and able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years.  Due to the nature of the role prison security vetting will be required.

We provide training for the role via e-learning and 5 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.

At Trailblazers, we believe in second chances. Since 1998, we’ve been mentoring young men in prison to reduce re-offending and inspire new futures. Through a programme of 1:1 mentoring and practical support, we support men aged 18–35 during the last 6 months of their sentence and for up to 12 months after release.

In London, our services run at HMP Brixton and HMPYOI Isis, and we’re looking for volunteer mentors who can commit half a day per week to help someone change their life.

What You’ll Do

• Be a positive and empathetic role model whilst supporting someone to fulfil their potential
• Meet regularly to build a supportive, consistent relationship with a mentee for a minimum of 12 months
• Help set goals and celebrate achievements
• Support reintegration into the community, education, and employment
• Attend and participate fully in mentor training and develop an understanding of the role, responsibilities and boundaries of a volunteer mentor
• Engage with ongoing support and supervision sessions to regularly review performance within mentoring relationships
• Perform your role in line with the aims of Trailblazers, following relevant policies and procedures and reporting safeguarding concerns immediately
• Keep mentoring session notes and communicate regularly with Trailblazers staff

Mentoring sessions last around 1 hour per week, with additional time needed for travel and liaison. We ask for a 12-month commitment to ensure consistency for the mentee.

Why It Matters

The national re-offending rate is up to 55%. For those with a Trailblazers mentor, it drops to just 7%. Your time could be the turning point in someone’s life.

• You cannot volunteer at a prison where you were previously a resident

Do you believe that everyone, no matter their circumstances, deserves the chance to learn to read and improve their numeracy skills?

Currently, 65% of people in prison can’t read, or struggle to. Even more struggle with numeracy.

At Shannon Trust, we believe everyone deserves the chance to learn. Over recent years, we’ve made significant progress – expanding our programmes, growing our team, and reaching more people than ever before. Now, we’re looking for new Trustees to join our board and help guide the next phase of our journey.

As a Trustee, you’ll work as part of a passionate board of 14 non-executive members, helping to shape our strategic direction and ensure strong governance. You’ll be involved in setting priorities, monitoring progress, overseeing finances, and ensuring we meet our legal and regulatory obligations. Trustees also play an important role in supporting and constructively challenging senior staff and acting as ambassadors for Shannon Trust.

This is a voluntary position, typically requiring around four to ten days per year. This is an unpaid role, though reasonable travel and other expenses are reimbursed.

You don’t need previous trustee experience — we’ll provide training and ongoing support to help you thrive in the role.

Trailblazers’ mission is to reduce re-offending and inspire new futures. Your support will help a young man to reconnect with his community, friends and loved ones, go into education, training and employment, and give a person a sense of hope for the future.

Trailblazers has been providing mentoring services to people in prison since 1998 with ultimate aim to reduce re-offending. We provide support to men between the age of 18 - 35 in custody who have 6 months left of their prison sentence, and then 'through the gate' into their own community for up to 12 months. The Education, Training & Employment (ETE) team supports our mentees in custody to break down barriers to employability. Post-release, this continues by supporting mentees to gain meaningful and career changing roles in sector specific industries such as Construction, Engineering, Catering & Hospitality or the Self-Employment route. 

The ETE team are looking to build a team of volunteers to work with mentees in the community and to shape the existing ETE service in the Thames Valley area. We are looking for volunteer mentors who can commit for up to 12 months and give a few hours a week to support men to change their life by being inspirational role models, helping with goal setting and supporting their mentee to access ETE opportunities and ultimately gain meaningful employment. Mentoring sessions will be 1:1, take place weekly and can be done remotely by telephone or online. These sessions will last approximately one hour, but some time should also be given to liaising with Trailblazers staff and researching relevant opportunities. 

Induction training is provided, out of pocket expenses covered, a mobile phone is provided to protect your identity, a Trailblazers T-shirt and lanyard are provided, DBS costs are covered, as well as regular reflective practice sessions to support you within your role. 

We are actively looking for people to join our mentoring community with lived experience of the criminal justice system, under represented groups from BAME community, creative arts, business skills, wellbeing - whatever your skills and background we are open to hear from you to support our diverse group of men. 

Trailblazers are looking for Volunteer Mentors who are:

• Empathetic with a positive outlook and manner.
• Able to help others without judgement or discrimination.
• Excellent communicators with a sense of humour.
• Well organised, can prioritise and multi-task.
• Reliable and able to commit to the role for up to 12 months providing weekly ETE sessions remotely either by telephone or via Zoom / MS Team digital platforms.
• Have skills and experience in supporting those who are disadvantaged into education, training and employment (ETE).
• Able to work independently with the ability to prioritise and manage your own workload with minimal supervision taking a flexible and creative approach to the demands of the post.
• Able to demonstrate sensitivity to other cultures, working with people from other backgrounds and demonstrate a commitment to equal opportunities.
• Live within a 30 mile radius of Bicester.

Kensington & Chelsea is a borough of extreme contrasts, with both some of the wealthiest and most deprived areas of the country. In North Kensington there are more than 6,000 children and young people living in poverty, with rates of child poverty in three wards higher than both national and London averages.  Unemployment and underemployment are significant issues, with more than 5,000 people unemployed, and more than 3,000 people claiming in work benefits. North Kensington is also home to Grenfell Tower, which remains a focus of our work, and HMP Wormwood Scrubs where we have provided advice to inmates for over 30 years. We also work with St Charles Mental Health Unit supporting those being discharged.  We are part of the Kensington & Chelsea Advice Partnership and as a partnership we have fielded over 14, 000 enquiries across the borough. 

Citizens Advice Kensington & Chelsea has helped more than 3.500 local people gain almost £2.3 million of support. We see a particularly high number of enquiries related to cost-of-living issues including claiming welfare benefits, managing their money and debts, and getting housing support.

We have a team of 17 staff, around 35 volunteers and operate with a budget circa £1 million. We are a member of both the national Citizens Advice charity and London Citizens Advice, and we contribute to regional and national research and campaign work to improve people’s lives.
