Role description
Are you passionate about changing the way we treat animals? Do you want to help reduce environmental damage? Do you want to inspire people to enjoy healthy vegan food that both looks good and tastes great?
The Vegan Society aims to make veganism more accessible. We help people to adopt a vegan lifestyle by supporting individuals, policy- and decision-makers, caterers, manufacturers, healthcare professionals and the media.
Why do we need you?
Laura Chepner is our Education Officer, and she is looking for a volunteer to support her in her role. Laura has a background in education, with a degree in Primary Education which preceded a decade of teaching and a short stint in the role of SENco (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). Shortly after that, Laura theorised vegan-inclusive teaching, published An Educator’s Guide for Vegan-Inclusive Teaching and worked as the UK’s first vegan-inclusion education specialist until joining The Vegan Society.
At The Vegan Society, Laura supports vegan learners in education who have been discriminated against by acting as an intermediary between their families and the institution. Additionally, Laura supports educators by creating resources and delivering training sessions on what it means to be vegan-inclusive in their practice. Furthermore, Laura empowers parents/guardians to ask for vegan-inclusion by creating documents, with the help of The Education Network, that they can present and highlight their rights.
What does the role involve?
This role involves working alongside our Education Officer to create around 50 differentiated worksheets for teachers of key stage 1 (KS1), Year 2 to use. No lesson plans to be made – just worksheets that support the National Curriculum English programmes of study for KS1, Year 2 outcomes. Laura would delegate certain literacy areas such as ‘suffixes –ful and –less’. Once complete, we would meet online to look over and then Laura would delegate another area of literacy to be completed.
Below is an example of the type of worksheets that will be created.
‘Today I am learning to use regular plural noun suffixes – s or – es.’
These tasks are not exhaustive, and more assignments may arise as the project progresses.
What training and support is available?
The ideal candidate for this role will have a background in Primary Education and be comfortable working independently. However, we are always willing to invite volunteers along to staff training when possible and to deliver training on specific skills in-house, as identified throughout the volunteering period. This role is remote, so support from the Education Officer will be available through email and phone calls as required. Monthly reviews with the Volunteering and Engagement Officer will also be conducted to ensure the volunteer is happy in their role.
What skills would be useful in doing this role?
We are looking for a volunteer with:
-
KS 1 or KS 2 experience
-
good Microsoft Office competency
-
an awareness of Vivi the Supervegan books
-
confidence to communicate any training or support needs
-
an ability to work independently.
What does my availability need to be?
We are looking for someone who is available for two months, starting as soon as possible. We are looking for eight hours of volunteer time per week, done across one or two working days, which are the same working days each week.
Who does this role report to?
Laura Chepner, Education Officer.

Every day, neurodivergent people in the legal profession face misunderstanding, outdated assumptions, and well-meaning but misguided "support." We're building something different - a charity that gets the science right, speaks with authority, and creates change based on evidence rather than good intentions.
We need someone who understands what neurodiversity really is - professionally, academically, maybe personally, to be our compass and our credibility.
What we're looking for
We need a neurodiversity specialist who can be our knowledge foundation - someone whose expertise ensures everything we do is grounded in current understanding and best practice.
Your background might include:
-
Professional expertise in neurodivergence through psychology, neuroscience, education, occupational therapy, or related fields
-
Deep knowledge of current research and evidence base around neurodivergence
-
Understanding of the real challenges neurodivergent people face in professional environments
-
The ability to translate complex concepts into language that lawyers (and everyone else) can understand
-
Genuine commitment to making the legal profession work better for neurodivergent people
What would be brilliant (but not essential):
-
Hands-on experience working with or advocating for neurodivergent individuals
-
Academic qualifications or research experience in relevant areas
-
Knowledge of workplace adjustments and inclusive employment practices
-
Understanding of career progression challenges in professional settings
-
Experience in education, training, or public awareness work
-
Personal lived experience of neurodivergence (valued but not required)
What you'll be doing
This isn't about lending your name to our letterhead. You'll be actively shaping everything we put out into the world:
Being our quality control:
-
Reviewing all our educational materials, resources, and communications to ensure they're factually accurate
-
Keeping us current with evolving research and best practices
-
Making sure our language is appropriate, respectful, and up-to-date
-
Helping us spot and counter misinformation before it takes hold
Guiding our strategy:
-
Providing specialist input on how we approach neurodiversity promotion in the legal profession
-
Advising on the most effective methods for raising genuine awareness and understanding
-
Supporting the development of educational programs that actually work
-
Identifying where we can make the biggest impact
Building our credibility:
-
Helping establish partnerships with respected neurodiversity organisations, researchers, and experts
-
Supporting our reputation as a source that legal professionals can trust
-
Advising on collaboration opportunities with academic institutions and healthcare professionals
Supporting our people:
-
Providing guidance to our neurodivergent volunteers in their advocacy work
-
Ensuring volunteer-led initiatives are built on solid understanding
-
Advising on accessible and inclusive team management practices
The need-to-know
Time commitment: Around 4-8 hours per month - one monthly trustee meeting plus the specialist input that makes the difference, and the occasional extra task that crops up.
Term: We're looking for a minimum 2-year commitment initially, which then becomes a rolling 1-year term subject to the constitutional requirements.
When we meet: We will be setting our meeting dates at the start of the organisation's year (October 2025) so everyone can plan ahead.
Next steps:
-
Applications close: 5 September 2025 at 17:00
-
Interview dates: TBC - dependent on application numbers
-
Next board meeting: TBC
Why this role matters
The legal profession is finally starting to talk about neurodiversity. But too often, the conversation is happening without the depth of understanding it deserves. Myths persist, outdated language gets used, and initiatives are built on shaky foundations.
Your expertise doesn't just add value to our work - it protects the people we're trying to help from being let down by another well-meaning but uninformed initiative.
What We Offer in Return
-
Real influence: Your knowledge directly shapes our approach and ensures our impact is positive
-
Professional recognition: Work with a charity that's building a reputation for getting it right
-
Meaningful connections: Network with other professionals who share your commitment to evidence-based change
-
Flexibility: We’re a team of working professionals and always work around professional commitments
-
Support: Join a board that values expertise and provides genuine collaboration
-
Development opportunities: Expand your governance experience and charity sector knowledge
-
Recognition: References, recommendations, and opportunities to speak on topics you care about
-
Expenses covered: We reimburse reasonable costs related to your trustee work
Whether your expertise comes from clinical practice, academic research, educational settings, or lived experience combined with professional knowledge, if you care about ensuring neurodiversity initiatives are built on solid foundations, we want to hear from you.
Application deadline: 5 September 2025 at 17:00
We're committed to making reasonable adjustments throughout our recruitment process and welcome applications from all backgrounds. If you need any support with your application, please let us know.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum (NNRF) is a £1m+ community-based charity providing advice and support to individuals and families who seek asylum or live as refugees. The Forum is a key partner of Nottingham City Council, and its work spans a number of separate programmes, much of which is delivered from our building and cafe in the heart of the city.
What exactly does the Forum do?
- We believe in a future where people are treated fairly and compassionately, and where everyone has the chance to feel safe and live with dignity.
- Working in partnership with others, our focus is on helping refugees and asylum seekers to rebuild their lives and to help with their immediate needs. We do this by providing a welcoming community centre, and by offering a range of support services and programmes, including impartial advice, advocacy and signposting.
We are seeking to appoint several Trustees during 2025, each on an initial 3-year term and applications are welcome from any background. In common with many organisations in this sector, people from ethnic minority backgrounds and those with lived experience of the asylum system are underrepresented on our Board at this time. Applicants who have governance experience, for example in schools or local government, or who may be working in a legal/HR role may be of interest. However, the most important attribute is that you have the energy, time and interest necessary to support the Forum’s work. Candidates will be appointed solely on a defined selection criterion, ensuring that ethnicity plays no role in the decision-making process.
The role of our Trustees is vital to what we do and it means that you can support those seeking refuge to re-establish themselves in a new country. The Board of Trustees has the ultimate authority and responsibility for directing and governing the organisation. Being a Trustee can be a hugely rewarding experience - it offers a fantastic development opportunity, the chance to make a positive impact, to build new relationships and to gain experience in charity operations. As a Trustee you will be able to use your knowledge, skills and experience and have a direct influence over a cause you care about. You will also get free access to a range of Board-level learning resources, including articles, webinars and national networking events.
These are voluntary roles, with meetings usually set for after normal working hours. The minimum time commitment is quite modest - we have six Board meetings per year, each lasting a couple of hours, and an Annual General Meeting in November. We do actively encourage Trustees to also get involved in the work of at least one of our committees, so all of this means a commitment of no more than 1 day per month.
How can I apply?
