About the Role

Reporting directly to the Director of Global Mission, this focal coordinating role within our Global Mission Team (GMT) will ensure the effective functioning of the GMT by offering:

• Administrative support to the Director

Prostate cancer is harming too many men, in exchange for too few cures, which is why we are motivated more than ever to deliver a future where prostate cancer is no longer limiting men’s lives. We invest in the most innovative research which will expand our understanding of prostate cancer and one day improve the lives of men with the disease. Recently we announced the funding of the TRANSFORM study, a £42 million programme to trial on a national scale new ways to screen for prostate cancer. It’s through this initiative that we intend to generate the definitive evidence needed to underpin a national screening programme for prostate cancer which could save thousands of men’s lives each year.

What the job involves

As a Diagnosis Research Lead, you’ll oversee the management of the TRANSFORM study on behalf of the charity, closely monitoring progress and spend against project timelines/budgets and regularly reporting back to key stakeholders internally and externally about this exciting initiative. You’ll regularly liaise with the study leads and the wider network of collaborators, as well as set up and oversee the management of the governance steering committees for the programme.

You’ll develop a detailed understanding of our portfolio of research and the wider diagnostic research landscape for prostate cancer, establishing and maintaining relationships with relevant research groups and companies working in the diagnostic space. This role will also involve working closely with colleagues in our communications and fundraising directorates to showcase the TRANSFORM study to public, scientific and healthcare professional audiences, demonstrating our research efforts towards achieving earlier and accurate diagnosis. 

What we want from you

We believe the TRANSFORM study will generate practice-changing evidence to support screening for prostate cancer, with the potential to save thousands of men’s lives in the UK each year. This is therefore a critical role to us. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about, and experienced in, research grant management and in particular, the management and delivery of multi-site clinical trials.

We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic about research and able to understand and communicate complex scientific information found in applications, progress reports, research papers and presentations. You’ll be a confident and clear communicator, able to build strong working relationships and provide valuable support to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior researchers, senior colleagues, trustees, corporate partners and committee members.

With experience in project management, you’ll have an ability to organise and prioritise a diverse workload depending on business need, delivering to stipulated timeframes whilst consistently maintaining the highest standards, with a meticulous attention to detail. This role will also require you to be proficient in the use of standard IT packages (most notably Microsoft Office), ideally with experience of grant management software such as Symplectic Grant Tracker.

Importantly, you must be excited and motivated about achieving major improvements for men with, or at high risk of, prostate cancer.

Your role will be to grow collaborations, facilitate groups and workshops, and coordinate action. About the role

This is an exciting senior role for an environmentally committed leader to cover maternity leave. We are looking for someone who can take strategic oversight of our Green Space for Health programme and provide effective management of the project and its staff.

Our Green Space for Health programme helps to realise the value of green space for physical and mental health, both at healthcare sites and in the wider community. Our flagship project, the NHS Forest, promotes tree planting and woodland creation at NHS sites, supporting and encouraging sites to plant and maintain trees through offering free trees and advice. We support NHS sites to develop their greenspace for the benefits of patients, health staff and communities, while improving biodiversity and combatting climate change. We do this by encouraging green space enhancements such as meadow areas, vegetable growing, orchards and therapeutic gardens, as well as supporting the delivery of nature-based interventions for health.

The Green Space for Health Director will oversee the development of the NHS Forest and other Green Space for Health projects, delivering the programme strategy. This will include managing the Green Space for Health team, overseeing the delivery of our funded projects including budget management, coordinating reports to funders and trustees, and taking a strategic lead on the development and funding of the Green Space for Health programme in consultation with other stakeholders. The Green Space for Health Director will deliver our programme strategy through fulfilling the following responsibilities:

• Provide line management for the Green Space for Health Team’s 5 staff members. This will include one-to-one meetings, appraisals and regular team meetings.
• Oversee the delivery of the Green Space for Health funded projects, including NHS Forest tree planting projects and our Nature Recovery Ranger programme.
• Raise income for, monitor and oversee the programme budget in consultation with CSH’s fundraising and finance team.

Purpose of project

The work should build on the previous State of The Sector report which was produced in 2020 and can be found here. This will be used to inform decision-making and new ways of working between the public sector and the VCFSE (voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise) sector.

Background

In 2020, there were over 2,700 charities registered with the Charity Commission as active in Somerset. While the majority are based within the county with a local remit, many others have a broader sphere of activity spreading beyond the county’s boundary. There are also hundreds of additional formal and informal or unregistered voluntary groups across the county. 

Together, these make up the local VCFSE sector, performing an essential role in strengthening their communities and enriching individual lives. It is vitally important for the well-being of Somerset’s communities and residents, that the ‘health’ of the sector is monitored and understood. Throughout the Covid pandemic, and the cost of living crisis, these groups provided a lifeline of support and services to individuals within their communities, and they continue to do so. However, these organisations have been hard hit in recent times due to increasing demand and challenges around sustainability and capacity. It is more important than ever to understand the state of the sector and what it needs to grow, develop and thrive in Somerset.

Scope of work

Spark Somerset is committed to innovative and creative approaches to support our communities. We invite interested researchers to design and deliver a mixed-methods approach to the research which will likely include: 

• Scoping: conduct an in-depth review of national and regional research; evaluate findings; compare, contrast & report on findings 
• Survey: design, develop and administer an online survey which gathers evidence from a range of organisations across the sector (e.g. size, type, purpose); analyse, collate and report findings
• Interviews: recruit and conduct telephone/video/in-person interviews with a cross-representative sample of stakeholders
• Focus groups: recruit and conduct focus groups with a cross-representative sample of stakeholders

Deliverables

The researcher will be expected to:

• Produce a comprehensive report detailing results of the research, including recommendations (see the previous State of The Sector report, published in 2020)
• Produce an executive summary of the report along with an illustrative infographic
• Present the results of the research to the steering group

Contract Type: Permanent/ Full time

Salary: £55,000 to £60,000 (pro rata) dependent on experience

Hours: 30 or 37.5 hours per week (4 or 5 days)

You may be an experienced CEO or an experienced senior manager looking for a step up. Our new Director will be skilled in both people and organisational management, with very good business and financial acumen.

We are interested in hearing from candidates with:

• A keen understanding of sustainable development and its status in global, national, and local contexts
• Significant and recent successful management experience at executive or senior level
• Experience of generating income, managing commercial and non-commercial income streams, and leading a financially sustainable organisation
• Experience of working in a small team, bringing together individuals from different parts of an organisation and delivering change

Springfield Advice & Law Centre is a community based legal practice and a registered charity. We were formed in 1982 when we were set up to serve the mental health community.  We are based mainly on the site of Springfield University Hospital Mental Health NHS Trust.  Springfield Law Centre is unique as a working model of a health justice partnership.

We are seeking a for a new Director & Head of Legal Practice to take forward this unique, niche Law Centre.  There is an opportunity for expanding the work of the Law Centre and showcasing the worth of health justice partnerships.We are looking for an energetic and compassionate lawyer with a broad experience of either housing or community care casework and representation, who is capable of being a legal aid category supervisor in either area, who has the confidence to lead the team and to develop it so that we can continue to make a real difference within the community.

Qualifications and experience

1. 5 years’ PQE qualified lawyer, with demonstrable experience of management at a senior level.
2. Ability to meet the supervisor for the Legal Aid Agency contract in either housing or community care.
3. A track record of implementing and managing change. 
4. A track record of leading and motivating others demonstrating strong people skills.
5. A track record of innovation and problem solving.
6. Appropriate skills and experience that demonstrate an ability and commitment to manage staff effectively. This should include support, supervision, and appraisal and performance management.
7. Appropriate skills and experience to effectively handle and manage complaints.
8. Experience of managing a Legal Aid Agency Contract and Legal Help matters, with billing targets.
9. Ability to bill all types of legally-aided work and to report to the Legal Aid Agency.
10. Ability to manage a varied caseload of sufficient, appropriate matters to meet the billing target in place.
11. Ability to draft appropriate documentation in your specialist area of law.
12. Experience of giving successful training or talks, for example giving presentations, or
13. representing clients before Courts or Tribunals.

15. Ability to take an active role in, leading the direction of the Law Centre, developing new strategies and raising profile.
16. Ability to manage the Lexcel Quality Mark and ensure that systems and standards are maintained across the organisation so that audits are passed.
17. Ability to understand the financial viability of the Law Centre.
18. Ability to report effectively to funders and to monitor progress against grant funded projects.
19. Commitment to equality and diversity as set out in the principles and policies of the Law Centre.
20. Ability to be self-servicing: you will be expected to manage most of your own typing, filing and billing of Legal Help/Aid cases to comply with LAA requirements.
21. Ability to prioritise your workload with minimum supervision.
22. Excellent communication skills: you must be able to relate well to colleagues, clients and third parties, in person, in writing and on the telephone, despite the pressures of the role.
23. You must be very well organised, with excellent ICT skills, in order to work well under pressure without compromising standards.
24. Ability to work flexibly and outside regular office hours including attending and reporting to the trustees on the progress of the Law Centre.

Consideration will be given to requests for flexible or family friendly hours of work to include job share, part time working or specific proposals. The Management Committee consider the range and number of duties to be a full-time role and that any reduction from a full-time role will result in a division of duties to accommodate all aspects of the Law Centre’s needs and aspirations.
