The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based NGO that builds the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation modification (SRM), a controversial proposal for reducing some impacts of climate change by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth. Degrees is neutral on whether SRM should ever be used, but we believe that developing countries should be empowered to conduct their own research and to play a central role in SRM discussions.

This is a unique opportunity to shape global conversations on climate science by empowering researchers in developing countries to publish and communicate their work, collaborating with some of the world’s leading SRM experts. 

The Scientific Writing and Publishing Lead will play a key role in supporting researchers in the Global South to communicate their findings effectively and contribute to the global SRM conversation. Working within the Programmes team, reporting to the Programmes Director, and in cooperation with the Communications team, the Scientific Writer will collaborate closely with research teams and external partners. Responsibilities will include: 

1. Support researchers with scientific writing and publishing

• Develop guidance materials on topics such as structuring research papers, writing abstracts, and best practices for peer-reviewed publication. 

• Train and support researchers to develop, refine, and publish scientific manuscripts through one-on-one and group training sessions and technical editing and feedback. 

• In collaboration with the Staff Scientist, help build climate researchers’ capacity to prepare and communicate their findings to different audiences. 

• Advise research teams on scientific publishing norms, including peer review, and open-access publishing.

• Support researchers in choosing appropriate journals and navigating the submission and review process.
• Assist researchers in adapting their work for public and policy-facing communication channels, ensuring clarity and accessibility.

2. Lead and coordinate reports and publications

• Serve as the lead coordinator for a recurring international scientific report, overseeing contributions from multiple researchers and ensuring deadlines are met. 

• Act as a writer for key sections of the report, synthesising insights from researchers into a compelling and scientifically rigorous narrative. 
• Work closely with stakeholders and coordinate peer review and fact-checking to ensure the report’s accuracy, consistency, and accessibility.

3. Support Degrees’ scientific communication and outreach

• Collaborate with the communications team to ensure that external materials such as blog posts, website content, policy briefs and media articles are scientifically accurate and up to date. 

• Work with the policy engagement teams to develop scientific summaries and briefings for a range of stakeholders. 

• Keep Degrees staff and researchers abreast of new techniques for communicating research results to a range of stakeholders and training them how to use them. 
• Ensure that information from our funded research teams is shared with the communications teams. 
• Work closely with Degrees’ Staff Scientist and provide support when required.

4. Manage projects 

• Manage multiple writing and editorial projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met. 

• Work closely with programme officers, researchers, and external partners to coordinate content development and align with strategic goals. 

• Working closely with the Staff Scientist in helping them to maintain an organised archive of scientific publications, reports, and communication materials for internal and external use.

Your new role
The Human Resources Division supports all people management activities across the school and is committed to delivering high-quality and customer-focused services. Reporting to the Director, HR Policy and Employee Relations, this post is responsible for maintaining existing HR policies and contributing to the development of new policy in consultation with a wide range of HR colleagues and stakeholders across the School.
This role also supports the development and implementation of key employee engagement and wellbeing projects. This includes playing an important role in developing and implementing initiatives and actions that emerge from staff feedback and annual benchmark reports. The post-holder will present a positive and efficient image of the Human Resources Division, working collaboratively with colleagues inside and outside the Division in order to deliver high-quality solutions that contribute towards the School's strategic agenda.Key responsibilities will include:

Policy Development:

• To stay informed of new legislative developments and ensure that appropriate revisions to HR policy are made accordingly, as well as working with the Director, HR Policy and Employee Relations to ensure that the wider HR Division is aware of the changes.
• To undertake appropriate policy benchmarking across the sector and with other leading organisations (both public and private).
• To support in ensuring that the university has a set of up-to-date and appropriate HR / employment policies and that these are accessible to staff and line managers, maintaining a regular programme of monitoring, review and improvement.
• To contribute to the development of discussion papers, with appropriate recommendations, for consideration by the HR Management Board, School Management Committee (SMC) and trade unions.
• To effectively engage and consult with appropriate representatives of the staff community in the development of HR/employment policies.
• To work collaboratively with other HR colleagues (e.g. HR Partners, Organisational Learning) to develop effective communication strategies to ensure that LSE policies are well communicated and widely understood.

Employee Engagement Projects

• To co-ordinate (i.e. arranging meetings, formulating the agenda, taking minutes and monitoring and following up on resulting actions) and / or participate in a number of internal working groups and consultative forums with trade union members, HR colleagues and managers around the school.
• To support ongoing activities relating to staff engagement and wellbeing, e.g. related projects, events and initiatives.
• To produce draft reports and initial analyses to support the development of new projects and initiatives.
• To support the Director, HR Policy and Employee Relations in monitoring the progress of both individual projects and progress against over-arching action plans, e.g. the School's Gender Pay Gap report.
• To take on the role of Data Lead for the HR Policy Team, supporting with developing the reporting and analytics roadmap, refining the data model to enable better use of available data and providing feedback on data quality issues.To liaise with the Information and Systems team, and other relevant colleagues as required, to produce timely and accurate management information to support project and development work within the team.
• To plan, organise and communicate the school's annual flu vaccination clinics, liaising with external and internal stakeholders, to ensure that this runs effectively.
• To complete annual benchmarking reports, developing and implementing action plans based on feedback.

• Previous experience of working in a large HR department supporting a complex and diverse organisation
• Can demonstrate a sound knowledge of UK employment legislation and HR good practice, with experience of advising colleagues and managers on HR policy and procedure

Key Responsibilities 

Administrative Support

• First point of contact for schools, clients, suppliers, and visitors triaging issues and responding efficiently and helpfully to queries in person, via phone, and by email

The role

The special events coordinator will report to the special events manager.

We're seeking an experienced and enthusiastic special events coordinator to join the dynamic philanthropy team. You will play a pivotal role in planning, organising, and executing a diverse range of events, providing the best possible experience to some of the charity’s most committed donors through a mixture of bespoke events, engagement events, and as we steer towards starting to do income-generating events.

The special events coordinator will support the special events manager in creating and managing an exceptional events programme to underpin major donor fundraising, supporting portfolio managers to successfully engage prospects and donors. You will be a creative and innovative thinker, dynamic and experienced in organising events from concept to delivery. You will be confident and comfortable working in an ambitious and busy team that is driven to provide a high level of supporter care and excellent and exciting events.

Principal responsibilities

Event planning and coordination

· Develop event concepts and themes, create detailed event plans, and coordinate all logistical aspects of events of events falling within the remit of this role.

· Work closely with the philanthropy and campaigns team to design and implement special events that maximise fundraising potential.

Stewardship events

· Plan and manage events to acknowledge and appreciate donors, facilitating their continued support and engagement with the charity.

Engagement activities

· Organise and execute events that foster engagement and increase awareness of the charity's mission and goals.  

Supporting the new cancer campaign

· Prepare for campaign events in support of a £50m campaign for a ground-breaking cancer centre on the Royal Free Hospital site.

Vendor management

· Whether on-site at one of our hospitals or at an external venue, take responsibility for sourcing, negotiating, and managing relationships with vendors, including caterers, suppliers, and on-site partners.

Budget management

· Create and manage event budgets, ensuring cost-effective solutions while maintaining high-quality standards.  

Communications and promotion

· Collaborate with the communications team to develop promotional materials and strategies to maximise event attendance and engagement.  

RSVP management

· Managing the RSVP mailbox, ensuring timely and accurate responses to event invitations and queries.

Database management

· Maintain and update event-related databases, ensuring accurate records of participants, donors, and sponsors.  

Relationship management

· Act as the main point of contact for colleagues, donors, and contractors, ensuring their needs and expectations are met throughout the event planning and delivery process.

Portfolio manager support

· Assist portfolio managers in engaging with prospects and donors effectively, providing event-related insights and facilitating meaningful connections.  

On-site coordination

· Oversee event setup, execution, and breakdown, ensuring all elements are in place and events run smoothly.  

Post-event evaluation

· Conduct post-event evaluations to gather feedback and identify areas for improvement.  

Oversight and responsibility

· Manage risk assessment, risk management, and first aid training to ensure the safety and well-being of all event participants. 

This position would suit a candidate who:

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications

· No specific qualifications are required, but a good level of numeracy and literacy is essential.

Experience

Essential 

· Significant events delivery experience, ideally within the not-for-profit sector.

· Proven track record in developing and managing events on time and ensuring it is in line with budget (managed by the special events manager) achieving key performance indicators and receiving positive feedback from guests.

· Evidence of using outstanding planning skills to deliver complex projects.   

· Experience of setting, monitoring and managing targets, objectives, KPIs and activity plans.  

Desirable 

· Experience of leading on the creation and implementation of innovative events that are tailored towards a specific audience’s interests.

Skills and knowledge

· A keen interest in the fundraising sector, with a desire to learn and grow in the role.

The team

Our dynamic fundraising department generated £4.5m through donations in 2023/24, and we are now preparing for an ambitious multi-million-pound campaign in support of a ground-breaking cancer centre on the site of the Royal Free Hospital.

Responsible for attracting and retaining donors, and delivering an outstanding supporter experience, the fundraising department comprises two teams which work closely together to achieve our shared objectives:

·Our philanthropy & campaigns team builds relationships with individual philanthropists, trusts, foundations, corporate organisations and intermediaries, giving or facilitating donations of £10,000 or more to the charity each year. They lead major appeal activity for the charity, currently focused on our forthcoming cancer campaign, the charity’s first patron programme, and special events to support these activities.

·Our public fundraising team harnesses the support and energy of individuals and groups, helping them to give back in the way that works for them. This includes committed giving, in memory support, gifts in wills, and fundraising events and challenges.

Job purpose

The Clinical Lead will play a pivotal role in leading and developing Action for ME’s Healthcare Services with the Operations Director, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care for individuals affected by Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). The postholder will be responsible for clinical oversight, service development, and leadership, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to enhance outcomes for children and adults with ME and will be the CQC Registered Manager for the service.

At present, the Healthcare Services is a small team with two doctors (GPs) and two physios. Our counsellors are overseen by a Counselling Lead Supervisor and our multi-faith Chaplains are supported by our Lead Chaplain.

We are keen to develop and expand our services, building on the small amount of spot purchasing from local commissioning boards and exploring a diagnosing and prescribing offer. We are also keen to explore the potential of increasing the range of disciplines offered within the team. You will play a key role in driving the strategy for our Healthcare Services with the Director of Operations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clinical support and expertise to Action for ME's Healthcare Services, ensuring evidence-based, person-centred care.

• Act as Registered Manager for CQC (Care Quality Commission) purposes and ensure that the service meets all required standards.

• Lead the development and implementation of clinical policies, protocols, and best practices in line with national guidelines and regulatory requirements.

• Supervise and support healthcare professionals within the service, offering guidance, mentorship, and training.

• Designated safeguarding officer for Healthcare Services.

• Collaborate with external stakeholders, including NHS services, researchers, and others, to enhance healthcare provision for people with ME.

• Ensure the service complies with regulatory and safeguarding standards, including CQC requirements where applicable.

• Monitor and evaluate service delivery, using data-driven insights to improve clinical outcomes and patient experience.

• Provide expert advice on complex cases, supporting staff with clinical decision-making.

• Represent Action for M.E. at external forums, conferences, and policy discussions.

Person specification

• A registered healthcare professional (e.g., doctor, nurse, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist) with active professional registration (GMC, NMC, HCPC or equivalent) OR an experienced commissioner of healthcare services with experience of quality assurance, safeguarding and compliance.

• Extensive clinical experience in chronic illness management OR sound understanding of clinical practice, ideally with expertise in ME or related conditions and a clear understanding of the challenges faced by people with ME.

• An understanding of Care Quality Commission regulatory requirements.

• Proven leadership experience in a healthcare setting, including team management and service development.

• Strong understanding of evidence-based practice and clinical governance.

• A sound understanding and experience of safeguarding children/young people and vulnerable adults.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with patients, carers, and healthcare professionals.

• Experience in training and mentoring healthcare professionals.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.

• Commitment to patient-centred care and advocacy for people with ME.

• Knowledge of NHS structures and commissioning processes.

• An understanding of working within the third sector or charitable organisations.

You should have:

• A deep understanding of international development & humanitarian theory, practice and standards
• Extensive relevant experience in the humanitarian ecosystem 
• Experience of leading within disaster response situations 
• Experience of contributing to complex programme decision-making, basing practical recommendations on sound analysis of risk and opportunity 
• Experience and knowledge of international humanitarian policy and practice issues and the humanitarian architecture sufficient to command the respect of others in the sector
• Experience in using best practices and humanitarian standards in designing programmes.
• Commitment to and experience of supporting locally led humanitarian action.
• Experience of developing and distance-managing partnerships with international or local agencies. 
• Proven experience of managing all elements of the project cycle. 
• An understanding of logical frameworks, monitoring and evaluation methodologies and the measurement of project impact. 
• Willingness to undertake significant international travel (approx. 4-6 trips per year).

The Fundraising Writer will help ensure the Partnerships & Philanthropy (P&P) Team has access to the information and assets needed to drive income generation and to meet our goals.

In this dynamic role you'll craft a range of compelling and creative fundraising materials.  Using your excellent communication skills, you will collaborate with colleagues across the charity to understand their work and translate into high quality propositions, cases for support, and other inspirational collateral for the P&P audience. Flynne’s Barn is a charity supporting young people living with cancer. We offer residential stays in the Lake District, bringing young people with a shared experience of cancer together to build community. During a stay we offer a range of outdoor and creative activities. We aim to provide the space for young visitors to relax, find friendship and to build confidence in a safe, supportive context. We also provide an online/telephone counselling service for young people and their families.

Vision of adventure, a small outdoor charity based in the Lake District , is seeking an experienced fundraiser to join our team. We specialise in working with people with visual impairments facilitating outdoor adventures, social connection and access to specialist coaching. To achieve this the organisation partners visually impaired individuals with sighted guides for residential weekends focusing on: long walks, canoeing, climbing, tandem biking, and more. The team comprises five part-time workers, numerous volunteers, and the board of trustees. We all work remotely, use each others first names, and have flexible scheduling.

The role of a fundraiser is paramount to our continued sustainability. You will be solely responsible for our fundraising initiatives. The charity has a commendable track record of raising funds, and you will be expected to surpass these targets as a professional fundraiser. An engagement officer will support your role by gathering feedback and preparing draft funder impact reports.

You will have extensive demonstrable fundraising experience. You will be personable, be an excellent communicator , make appropriate use of information communication technology, and capable of managing your own time and workload.
