Befriending Networks, the world’s largest network of befriending projects, is recruiting two trustees to help us champion the vital role of befriending in reducing loneliness and social isolation.
Around 1 in 6 people worldwide experience loneliness. Befriending services respond to this need by matching people in their communities for planned social activities that build meaningful connections.
Befriending Networks supports over 300 member organisations to deliver quality befriending services, through sector-specific training, events, resources, awards and 1:1 support.
As a Befriending Networks trustee, you will be part of a welcoming and active board that enables befriending services across the UK and beyond to thrive. You will join us at an exciting time, as we begin to deliver our next strategic steps as an organisation.
Following a recent board skills review, we are seeking two individuals who can offer skills in the following areas:
- Income generation – This trustee will have an enterprising mindset, with experience of strategic fundraising, working with grantmakers, trusts and foundations or devising corporate sponsorships. Their guidance will help our charity to move into new ways of generating income, allowing us to become more resilient and advance our vision for a society where the importance of meaningful connections is valued.
- Sector influence and advocacy – This trustee will be a great communicator, with a skill for forming and sustaining effective relationships. They will have a broad professional network which might include national or international connections. They may have connections which include the private sector, academia, thinktanks or investors interested in making social impact. Their experience might include research, policy making or campaigning. Their guidance will help us advocate for the befriending sector with greater impact and effectiveness.
By joining the Befriending Networks board, you will play an integral role in moving our charity forward and helping us champion the impact of befriending on loneliness and isolation. If you have the skills we’re looking for and are energised by working collaboratively to help organisations (and others) succeed, we’d love to hear from you.
We are keen to hear from applicants with diverse lived experiences, especially those currently underrepresented in trustee boards. No previous board experience is required and you do not need to meet all requirements listed in the role descriptions to apply.
Location: Remote/UK-wide (with one in-person meeting in Edinburgh per year)

You will be based at Esteem’s Shoreham office but may meet your mentee in a public place such as a coffee shop, if that is what you both prefer and meets safeguarding requirements.

You will be skills matched with a young person who will have similar interests, experience or an interest in your professional field. You will support your mentee by identifying and highlighting their skills and establishing realistic and achievable goals by breaking them down into manageable steps.

You will enter notes onto our database system UpShot after each meeting with your mentee and will be asked to fill in an outcome form at the conclusion of your mentoring relationship.
Principal tasks and responsibilities

To meet with your mentee regularly (once a week or once a fortnight) at a convenient time for you both either at the Esteem’s office or in a public place like a cafe.

To offer ongoing vocational support to your mentee and support them to access services (such as in-house Counselling or from external organisations) if they need help with any issues they are dealing with.

To support your mentee through their vocational setting, either volunteering at Esteem or within their personal, work or educational setting.

To offer positive feedback and aim to build self-confidence with your mentee.

To keep up to date notes of your meetings.

Complete regular reviews with the mentee and create a clear action plan if appropriate.

Attend all relevant training to your role.

To report any safeguarding concerns to the Safeguarding Team.

To maintain the required level of confidentiality in all tasks and communications.

Experience
For this round of recruitment we are looking primarily for those who work in the creative industry and those who may have started their own business and/or have an entrepreneurial background. That being said, we are more than happy to accept applications from those who feel they have other skills and experience that could benefit young adults.
Whilst some experience of mentoring or supporting young adults would be helpful this is something we will cover in the day’s training.

What will I be involved in?
- Identify and research information and services to signpost that are relevant to the client’s situation, drawing on information resources, agencies, and other sources of information.

Who we are
Arts for Dementia uses the power of the arts to inspire people living with dementia to get creative, connect, learn new skills and most importantly, have fun.Our free workshops aim to challenge and boost confidence and wellbeing through a variety of art forms from visual arts to drama, sculpture, dance and more.
For people living with dementia and those who support them day to day, these are opportunities to make friends in a safe and friendly setting, to be part of the local community, to stay active and to enjoy the fulfilment that comes from creative activities. Our current priority locations are the London boroughs of Southwark and Camden.Our in-person workshops are all in London, while online activities are open to people across the UK.
Our regular one-day training courses provide creative facilitators across the UK with the knowledge and skills they need to support dementia-friendly activities.
The role of a trustee
Our team of trustees plays a key role in setting the strategy – the overall direction – of the charity. There are four formal board meetings each year where, together with the Chief Executive, our trustees oversee the delivery of the strategy and financial management, consider operational plans and explore what support they can provide to enable the staff team in their work.
Often this support is connected to a trustee’s expertise in a particular field, for example marketing, fundraising, I.T. or legal, or the networks they have access to such as local community groups, potential donors or arts organisations.
Specific areas of activity such as finance and fundraising are also supported by small sub-committees that bring appropriate staff and trustees together so that work can be progressed between the quarterly meetings. These are arranged at times to suit those involved.
Currently quarterly meetings of all Trustees are held in person and online alternately. Online meetings are early evening, and in-person meetings are in central London during the day. They each last for two hours. If it helps new trustees to be fully involved, we are happy to explore different timings for future meetings.

You can make a real difference to those and others affected by bringing your additional experience into the charity. This might be from involvement in your community or your understanding of dementia within a minoritized ethnic group. It might be from your work, leisure activities or your profession.
The important thing is that your experience should broaden our knowledge, help us reach a wide range of people and ensure our charity is far-sighted and well run.

We know that dementia and its effects have no barriers, so our approach to recruiting new trustees aims to have no barriers and to be supportive and open to ideas. As a Trustee, you would be working with a friendly and approachable board that brings together a range of experience, which is enhanced by the skills of the staff team. All new Trustees will benefit from an induction programme that allows them to get to know the staff and other trustees, meet some of the beneficiaries, learn how the charity works and understand the formal responsibilities. We would also enable you to develop your skills and confidence through access to training and information on Trustee responsibilities and skills.

About Youth ESOL:
Our award-winning ESOL project offers English language classes to young people at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling young people to do well at school or college.
About the Role:
CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our face-to-face study programme called ‘Get Ready for School.’
This programme is attended by young people out of education and is based in Tooting on Mondays and Wednesdays. Core delivery of the programme includes English, Maths, Digital skills, complemented by Reading and Writing for Pleasure.
Volunteers in this role are required to commit to at least one 2-hour session per week, during these times:
- Monday 10am - 3pm
- Tuesday 2pm - 6pm
- Wednesday 11am - 6pm
Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.
Volunteer Tasks and Responsibilities:

We pioneered the first LGBTQ+ youth group in Europe and launched the UK's first specialist psychotherapy service for survivors of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Our groundbreaking work continues to inform practices and policies at both local and national levels.
We are particularly seeking trustees with skills in fundraising (including expertise in securing grants from trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships, statutory funding, legacies, and major gifts), Human Resources, and communications. Knowledge, experience, and a thorough understanding of the charity sector are essential, alongside a demonstrable commitment to our values. Previous board experience is desirable but not essential. We particularly welcome candidates with lived experience of the issues we are seeking to address, including socioeconomic inequality, mental health, and the asylum process.
Trustees commit roughly 6 hours monthly, guiding strategic direction, ensuring effective governance, promoting equality and inclusion, and serving as ambassadors for MGWT’s vital work.

Community Development Volunteer
Our Community Development Volunteers undertake an administrative role that provides support to our Community Development Co-ordinator in a variety of ways.
As a Community Development Volunteer in England, you might:
· conduct online research
· attend events to raise awareness or present
· engage with project participants on social media
· deliver promotional material in a variety of locations
All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00. You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

Greater Together Manchester (GTM) is a dynamic and forward-thinking charity, working across Greater Manchester to support communities to tackle deprivation and transform the lives of vulnerable people.
This is an exciting time for GTM as we look at our strategy post-pandemic, and how we can expand the remit of our work to better achieve our charitable aims.
The aims of the charity include:

As a trustee with fundraising expertise, in particular grant and trust fundraising, you will have the skills and capacity to support our staff in applying for grants.
You will take the lead on fundraising at board level, working with trustees and staff to create and implement a robust fundraising plan for all of GTM’s activities.
This is an unpaid, voluntary role, but presents a great opportunity for personal and career development. Trustees are able to claim out of pocket expenses in accordance with GTM’s expenses policy.
The role would suit a range of people, from young professionals looking to broaden their leadership credentials, to senior or retired professionals looking to give something back to their local communities.
The statutory duties of all trustees are:
- To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
- To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations, and that the organisation complies with all relevant reporting requirements.

Main Responsibilities of Trustee (Fundraising Lead):
To advise the Board of Trustees on matters relating to funding and fundraising
- Working with other trustees and senior staff, the Trustee (Fundraising Lead) will take a lead role in setting an effective fundraising strategy for GTM.
- Provide governance leadership on GTM’s fundraising, helping to build and implement fundraising that supports our strategy.
- Provide strategic oversight of fundraising.
- Draw on your networks and experience to support the work of GTM.
- Help ensure that staff have the skills and capability that they need to implement the strategy.
Person Specification
Essential for the Fundraising Lead:
- Recent experience in a fundraising role, ideally at a senior level, with a track record of large grant successes.
- An understanding of the UK charity sector, good governance, and statutory requirements relating to companies and charities.
- A thorough understanding of fundraising policies and procedures.
Essential for Trustees:
- Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trustees.
- Enthusiasm and belief in our vision and mission.
- Commitment to the charity’s objects, aims and values, and a willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities.
- Strategic, forward-looking and the ability to think creatively in relation to the aims of the charity.
- Good, independent judgement and the ability to act in the best interests of the charity.
- Ability to work at a strategic level whilst understanding the detail and complexities of delivery.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Respect for the importance of confidentiality.

Desirable for Trustees
- Personal experience of poverty, or experience of working with people experiencing poverty.
- Prior experience of being a charity trustee.
- Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation.
- A wider involvement/interest in the VCSE sector.
- A knowledge and understanding of the Church of England and/or the Diocese of Manchester.
Time Commitment and Location
You will be expected to commit approximately one day per month to support with grant fundraising, although this will be flexible and can work around your schedule. There may also be a requirement to meet with staff to discuss fundraising and grant applications outside of these meetings and to act in an ambassadorial role for GTM at other meetings and events.
Trustee meetings take place four times per year, normally at GTM’s offices in central Bury.
You will also be expected to commit to approximately 1-2 hours to prepare and/or read through papers prior to each meeting (papers are distributed one week in advance of meetings).
The Board is also called upon for advice or to update on ongoing matters, or to make more urgent decisions by email.

Who We Are
The Weston Park Foundation (WPF) is a charity governed by a Board of Trustees meeting twice yearly. The Foundation's assets run to many millions of pounds, with many of its treasures to be found within the House. The Park is some 1,000 acres, including two Capability Brown landscapes.
WPF has a wholly owned and successful subsidiary, Weston Park Enterprises Ltd (WPEL), which trades at Weston: not just general tourism and visits, but a restaurant, cafe and an Art Gallery in the Granary, corporate hospitality, leisure and cultural tour residential stays in the House, major events in the Park, as well as six holiday rentals.
Since its inception in 1986, the trustees have been able to restore the House and its possessions, the park, and the gardens to a condition not seen for centuries. Exciting new projects are in the pipeline aimed at increasing and diversifying income streams.

Role Overview
We are looking to appoint someone with relevant experience to act as Company Secretary to the Board of Trustees of WPF as well as sit on the Audit Committee. In addition to support the role of CEO of the organisation in terms of corporate governance and best practices of the charity.
We are seeking an individual who is committed and passionate about heritage and the positive impact it can have on communities.
Skills and knowledge.
Experience of running or advising a commercial /quasi-commercial organisation or a charity is essential; as is an ability to cope with financial accounts and projections and strong knowledge of corporate governance. Knowledge of charity law and procedure is not essential, but would be helpful.
A legal background will be useful, in terms of fulfilling the role of Company Secretary, closely monitoring ongoing developments in collaboration with the Chairman and the Chief Executive, all the while providing informed advice as needed. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, accompanied by a readiness to engage in constructive and collaborative decision-making is essential.
We would welcome guidance on various governance issues, which encompass key areas.
- Offering support and direction to the Chair of the Board, the Chief Executive Officer, and the Chair of the Audit Committee regarding their governance responsibilities, in alignment with established policies and best practices. Special care is taken in reviewing meeting minutes to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the records.
- Advising on procedural matters, including the delegation of powers
- Drafting terms of reference for committees
- Defining internal cross charge arrangements
- Hearing rare appeals related to dismissals or other employment claims
- Assisting with periodic tenders for professional services
- Committing to the promotion of diversity, equality, and inclusion, while fostering a culture of respect, learning, and understanding.
Commitment
The role of Company Secretary is voluntary but the postholder will receive an annual honorarium of £7k. Travel expenses for attending meetings can be covered if necessary. There are two Trustee Board meetings annually (Audit Committee meetings are held during these Board meetings) and five Executive Committee meetings. Active participation in this Committee is essential for strategic planning and related activities.

Whether you’re a jobseeker interested in a career in construction or woodwork, a student or recent college graduate seeking experience, or just someone with spare time on your hands, wanting to do something positive and meet new people, volunteering with the Touch Wood project at EMERGE 3Rs may be just the ticket!
Touch Wood is a wood recycling and upcycling initiative, which collects surplus and waste wood and timber and gives it a new lease of life, preventing it from being burned, chipped, or dumped in landfill.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Preparing wood for resale
* Assisting with the construction of wooden products, from small household items to pieces of furniture
Our Touch Wood volunteers are able to gain skills in practical woodworking, as we offer hands-on experience of working with reclaimed timber; from making basic lumber products ready for resale, through to assisting with the creation of bespoke items, such as kitchen equipment and home and garden furniture.
Full training in woodworking and health and safety is provided, along with Personal Protection Equipment.
The UK generates around 5 million tonnes of wood waste every year, but less than 1% is reused. Touch Wood rescues waste timber that would otherwise be landfilled or turned into woodchip; creating jobs and training opportunities for disadvantaged local people at the same time. We collect from construction sites, industrial estates and other commercial sources, reclaiming everything from pallets to indoor cycle tracks – you name it, we take it! Anything we can’t reuse is locally recycled, so nothing goes to waste. This reduces the carbon emissions associated with disposing of waste wood, offers cost savings for DIY enthusiasts, and provides training and job potential to volunteers in the workshop. Some of the timber we work with comes from high profile sources, including the entire track of the Manchester Velodrome cycling centre and wood removed in the recent refurbishment of Manchester’s historic Town Hall!
Our skilled team of staff and volunteers often use reclaimed timber to create beautiful and practical products, such as home and garden furniture. We regularly create bespoke pieces to order; some of it for famous clients like Olympic cycling champions Jason and Laura Kenny, for whom we made a table from the Manchester Velodrome track.
Please be advised that our volunteers require a fair level of physical fitness and manual dexterity as the role is entirely practical.
Our Touch Wood workshop and wood store is open Mon-Fri, 8.30am - 4pm.
We occupy a unit at Maynard House, inside New Smithfield Market, in Openshaw, North Manchester, which is accessed from the main entrance on Whitworth Street East (off Ashton Old Road). The site is served well by buses, and we have free parking onsite, as well as secure storage racks for pushbikes.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must be resident in the UK and living in Greater Manchester, or within easy commuting distance of our base, in order to volunteer with us. There are no exceptions to this rule. This is because we require volunteers to be able to reliably commit to regular shifts for some of our roles. We are unable to offer sponsorship for overseas applicants.
