Job Title: Advocacy and Mobility Services Manager

Context of Job

AFK is a national charity helping young disabled people develop their independence and find employment. Our vision is a world where all people living with a disability get to lead the life they choose. As part of this we provide bespoke employment skills training and organise work placements across North London.

At a national level, we provide mobility equipment not available on the NHS for disabled children and young people up to the age of 25. The Advocacy and Mobility Services Manager leads this service.

Overall Job Purpose

To develop and manage AFK’s Mobility Service including overseeing the progress of funding applications for mobility equipment, managing the waiting list and ensuring a quality service to our beneficiaries. The Advocacy and Mobility Services Manager will be responsible for providing advocacy support, enabling applicants to secure equipment from statutory services, where appropriate. They will also manage the maintenance and reallocation of AFK-owned powerchairs.

Working Conditions

The post is 21 or 28 hours a week, normally between 9am and 5pm. (We are Hybrid working organisation with 1 core day in the office and 2-3 days working from home, with core hours between 10am and 4pm).

The post holder may be expected to work some evenings and weekends as required by the job.

Working Relationships

Line Manager to the Fundraising and Mobility Officer

Close working relationships with mobility equipment suppliers

On a day-to-day basis there will be regular contact with beneficiaries and their families, mobility equipment suppliers and health professionals, as well as Service Delivery and Fundraising Managers.

On-going contact with grant giving organisations and associated bodies.

Principal Responsibilities

1. To develop policies to support the direction of AFK’s Mobility Services, in relation to criteria for funding equipment, guidance on managing the waiting lists and the provision of loaned/ beneficiary owned equipment etc.

2. To identify applicants for mobility funding who could access statutory funds. To provide advocacy support to those families including submitting formal letters of complaint to NHS Trusts and/or taking legal advice. To monitor savings to the Mobility budget, as a direct result of advocacy intervention.

3. To ensure the mobility equipment budget is spent appropriately by developing and implementing funding criteria, negotiating competitive rates with suppliers, encouraging families to consider a range of options for high end equipment and ensuring statutory services support funding where appropriate.

4. To line manage the Fundraising and Mobility Officer to enable her/him to progress applications for mobility grants, from initial enquiry to order and delivery of equipment.

 5. To provide AFK’s Fundraising and Communications teams with data and feedback from families and to identify potential case studies.

6. To support selected applicants with individual fundraising, including applying to Trusts and charities and writing to businesses.

7. To monitor the funds raised by AFK’s individual fundraising activity.

8. To keep abreast of changes in the field for example: developments among competitors and pricing in the market; progress of the NHS England wheelchair campaign; and changes to Clinical Commissioning Groups’ criteria.

9. To provide families with information to enable them to make a decision about whether to apply for funding.

10. To liaise with other grant giving charities to keep up-to-date with changes in the field and to ensure part funding is provided effectively.

11. To ensure AFK’s equipment grant application form is clear and up-to-date and that the process is managed in a timely and efficient way.

12. To oversee the development and maintenance of systems for recording the grant application process.

13. To manage the maintenance and repair of loaned powerchairs, developing procedures for reallocating chairs and/or passing ownership on to beneficiaries.

14. To supervise the Fundraising and Mobility Officer to develop systems for monitoring and reporting on maintenance expenditure.

15. To undertake other relevant responsibilities as required by the Executive Director of Services.

THE ROLE

The full-time Communications and Research Manager reports to the Chief Communications Officer, working to help inform the public about antisemitism using a variety of media.

You will be joining our small, fast-paced, entrepreneurial staff team based at our office in central London.

Responsibilities

• You will write and edit journalistic-quality articles about antisemitism, from crime to politics, including investigative pieces

• Compose posts for our numerous social media channels, where we have an unrivalled following

• Design mailouts for our subscribers, informing them of our latest work and how they can get involved

• Draft accessible content for videos and our podcast, working with our Creative team which will use your concepts and content to create final products for our online audience

• Cultivate media relationships and provide information and research to journalists in real-time

• Help conceive innovative campaigns to raise awareness of antisemitism and educate the public

• Submit complaints to media broadcasters, regulators and others when outlets fail to meet their editorial standards

• Correspond with members of the public who write in to us

The Supporter Relationship Manager is responsible for all individual donor support processes, systems, strategies and individual giving fundraising appeals, which ensure we have excellent relationships with our donors to retain and grow our individual giving income.

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) is seeking a proactive and skilled Media Officer to join our Communications and Public Affairs team. This is a newly created role, offering the opportunity to help shape and strengthen NFCC’s voice in the national conversation around fire and rescue services.

Reporting into the Media and External Affairs Manager, you will play a central role in growing our media presence and positioning NFCC as the go-to source for journalists covering national fire and rescue issues. You will help to ensure our messages are clear, timely, and authoritative across all platforms.

Join us and help ensure that fire and rescue services have a strong, consistent voice on the national stage.

Key responsibilities:

Serve as a point of contact for incoming media enquiries.

Draft high-quality, publication-ready communications content – including press releases, news articles, opinion pieces and other engaging content. 

Support NFCC’s campaigns and policy initiatives by securing media coverage and developing strong relationships with journalists and editors.

Take ownership of key communications tools and systems, including media monitoring and audit of coverage. 

Act as the lead Comms officer on at least one area of NFCC’s work in partnership with the relevant NFCC teams and lead officers (but will also work on a wide range of our issues and areas).

Participate in an out-of-hours communications rota as part of NFCC’s communication support function (with some out of hours support – see job description for more information). 

What we are looking for:

Experience in a media, journalism or communications role. 

Excellent writing skills with the ability to produce accurate, compelling content under pressure. 

Confidence in handling media enquiries and building positive relationships with the press. 

Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. 

A collaborative approach, with experience working across teams and engaging with senior stakeholders. 

A good understanding of the UK media landscape and wider external environment.

Working with us:

NFCC is a fully remote organisation, and all staff work from home. This role will involve some travel for stakeholder meetings, events, conferences, training sessions and team away days, for which travel expenses are paid.

More about the role:

The Database and Gifts Officer role is integral to the Development and Alumnae Relations (DAR) department, supporting the school’s fundraising and engagement efforts. The postholder will manage and maintain the alumni and donor database, ensuring the accurate entry of gifts and pledges, and collaborate with the Finance team to ensure financial data is up to date and reconciled. Additionally, the post holder will create targeted mailing lists, conduct due diligence on prospective donors, and support the identification of lost alumnae. The role also involves ensuring compliance with data protection laws and contributing to DAR events, which may occasionally occur outside regular hours​.

Key Responsibilities:

• Experience of working on a database, extracting, interrogating and reporting on data.
• Knowledge and experience of Raiser’s Edge, Toucan Tech or a similar fundraising database.
• Demonstrated track record of processing gifts and donations
• Proven track record of database administration, import/export, configuration and problem resolution.
