Recruiter Insights for January 2024

This month we’re again highlighting some facts and figures from the labour market, this time based on the jobs posted on CharityJob during October–December 2023. We’ll also share some insight into our candidate demographics.

Demand for jobs

Candidate demand, measured by the number of clicks on a job ad’s ‘Apply’ button, increased by 37% compared to the same period in 2022.

This comes from a decrease in the number of jobs and an increase in candidate activity.

Candidate numbers

The number of active candidates on our website was up 5% compared to the same quarter in 2022, and up 26% from the July–September 2023 quarter.

The number of new candidate registrations was 79% higher than the same period in 2019. In particular, October had 24,647 new candidate registrations on the CharityJob website―the highest we saw in 2023. As we moved into November and December we saw a decline in these numbers (as in previous years), as candidates slow down job applications ahead of the festive season. We expect it to pick up again in January this year.

We’re currently seeing more active candidates and new registrations, and a decrease in the number of jobs. This reinforces what we saw in July–September 2023: the recruitment market is shifting away from being candidate-driven.

Number of jobs posted

The number of jobs posted saw a decrease of 5% from the same quarter in 2022. December, in particular, saw a year-on-year decrease of 16%, though it was still an increase of 5% compared to 2019.

Candidate demographics

Our candidates are more ethnically diverse than the wider UK charity sector and UK population. 29% of our candidates are from ethnically diverse backgrounds compared to only 18% in the UK population and 10% in the UK charity sector.

We have representation of candidates across age groups, with 91% of candidates aged between 25 and 64.

72% of our candidates identify as female, 24% as male and 2% as non-binary.

One in five (20%) candidates identify as having a disability―this is a 7% increase from our 2021 demographics survey.
