Grants & Bids Writing Volunteers Role Overview

The Africa Health Organisation (AHO) will be 25 years old on 14 August 2025. We seek Grants and Bids Writing Volunteers to join us celebrate our Silver Jubilee from across the world to help us apply for funding from major donors, development aid agencies and public sector tenders.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Grant writing

• Developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organisations.
• Assembling and submitting grant requests, including letters, proposals, and budgets.
• Track and create a calendar of grant opportunities - including deadline dates, required materials,
• Researches and identifies potential sources of funders and corporate and governmental funding.
• Complete and submit grant applications to secure funding

 Tender & Bid Writing

• Write and submit tenders to win contracts.
• Maintaining awareness of tenders, acquiring PQQ questionnaires and tender documentation.
• Responding to tender invitations from the UK and other governments, EU tenders, the public sector and local authorities from the UK in areas such as health and social care.
• Recruit partners for the EU grants & tenders and other tender projects.
• Collating the input of contributions to create a coherent and well-structured final tender and ensuring the timely submission of tenders and other proposals.

Funding and Finance

The role will involve seeking and securing funding and finance for the specific goals, objectives, targets, and outcomes. You will work with the AHO President, the Board and senior management to research and identify public, private, philanthropic, individual giving, and legacy funding and finance. Each volunteer will have the opportunity to choose their goal and set a fundraising target to achieve.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required

• Degree in any subject area that results in superb language writing skills, including grammar, clarity and style.
• Excellent writing, analytical, and research skills are essential. Candidates must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly organised and have experience using online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information.
• You MUST have at least 3 years of experience writing and delivering successful grants and tenders, especially for public health contracts such as health checks, smoking cessation, etc., from the UK government, NHS, DOHSC, Ministry of Justice, London authorities, and county councils.
• An understanding and passion for issues affecting Africa's political, social and economic development and health, social care, climate change and environmental development.

Languages requirements

The ability to speak one of Africa's widely spoken languages would be an added advantage e.g. Afrikaans, Amharic, Arabic, Bemba, Berber, Chewa, Chinese, Dinka, English, French, Fula, Fulani, German, Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Igbo, Italian, Japanese, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Kongo, Korean, Lingala, Malagasy, Mandinka, Nambia, Ndebele, Nyanja, Oromo, Portuguese, Russian, Sango, Sesotho, Shona, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Swati, Thai, Tigrinya, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Vietnamese, Xhosa, Yoruba, Zulu, etc. You are still welcome to apply if you don't speak any of the above languages.

Key Responsibilities

● Research suitable grant-making trusts and foundations, with a particular focus on those funding mental health, faith-based initiatives, and/or community wellbeing.

● Work closely with the Director of Development to maintain a pipeline of prospective funders.

● Draft high-quality, tailored funding applications that reflect the heart, outcomes, and impact of Mercy UK’s work.

● Collate and interpret project data, outcomes, and financial information to support applications.

● Support the development of template responses and maintain accurate records of submissions and outcomes.

● Assist in preparing follow-up reports or updates required by funders.

What will you be doing?

EcoCounts is a group of volunteers working together to embody EcoCore’s approach to the climate crisis. EcoCore covers a lot of ground because the climate and biodiversity crisis is so all-encompassing, which means we have a lot of varied and different volunteer tasks available, ranging from carbon footprint data collection, setting up sub-teams of friends or colleagues or doing social media or running workshops. 

Your responsibilities would be to create volunteer tasks from our work streams, which would include things like: 

• creating a role description for each volunteer task to give a good outline of everything required and expected

• keeping track of what volunteers are active on

• encouraging and inspiring volunteers to deliver on commitments

• creating an incentives or rewards framework for volunteers, potentially working with supporting businesses to agree on gift vouchers, tokens etc

• managing a small budget

• building up a social network with events, collaborations and other inputs

• using our social media accounts to advertise, to celebrate achievements etc

• help other directors, trustees & secretary keep reporting, stats, and feedback on activities up-to-date

Goals

1. Our 2025 target is 100 people doing their carbon footprints

1. You should be a people-person with experience of managing people. You should be happy to put in the time and effort communicating with the volunteers both all-together and individually in a way that gets the best results from them.

Society has got itself into a dangerous situation with the climate crisis and EcoCounts aims to create a way out. We need all sorts of different people, not just climate nerds and sustainability fanatics, although of course that doesn't hurt. The person we need right now is someone who knows what people need to keep them happy and effective as a volunteer for us.

Being a volunteer-based organisation at this stage still, that might make the volunteer chief of staff the most important person we have. Of course we all consider each other equal. Being small and dynamic means EcoCounts can offer the flexibility for you to do an excellent and fulfilling job.

About The Role

At Washington you will be involved first hand are in assisting the collection team in  maintaining and developing exhibits within the site at Washington to enhance the visitor experience.

This involves helping the Collection team to care for our large collection of rare and endangered species of waterfowl from around the world as well as wetland mammals.

Conducting public talks with our otters and Flamingos is also an important part of the role. Helping the team to inspire our visitors by the work we do and also showing them how they can get involved.

Why volunteer with us? We have one of the largest waterfowl collections in the North East, with over 40 species, 15 of which are of Conservation Concern, including the current flock of 56 breeding Chilean Flamingos and a pair of Asian Short-clawed Otters. Previous volunteers have gone on to work in animal conservation work around the world. 

We are currently looking for volunteers that can help us on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We ask that you can commit a minimum of 6 months to get the most from your role. You must be over 18 to apply for this role.

Project

There is a huge variety of tasks available to communications volunteers depending on the volunteers’ interests, experience and the activities going on within Voluntario Global at the time. Some of these tasks include:

• Creating content and updating the social media sites: Voluntario Global keeps people up to date with its work and spreads its message through the use of social media such as Facebook and Instagram. It is important to keep these pages up to date with recent activities and new volunteers, and communications volunteers can take on this responsibility. Volunteers will visit various projects or events throughout the week and take photos of the activities and the volunteers to post on Voluntario Global’s social media. They can also document what volunteers get up to in their free time.
• Writing blogs for the Voluntario Global website: Living in the city of Buenos Aires and visiting all the different volunteer projects, there are so many interesting things to write about. Voluntario Global’s website has a blog section for volunteer experiences, culture or current issues and many other topics which you will keep up to date. You have the option to write a few short blogs per week which will be posted onto the webpage and the Facebook giving people more of an insight into living in Buenos Aires and the volunteer experience.
• Interviewing: To ensure that Voluntario Global has up to date information on the volunteers, the projects and the coordinators working at the projects, you can take on the role of interviewing people. These interviews may be with current volunteers in English or Spanish, or with people from in the projects in Spanish and may be used in video form, or be typed up and used for descriptions of projects or website information.
• Translation: The Voluntario Global website uses both English and Spanish so volunteers can help translating information for the website or for the project descriptions.

In order to accomplish tasks, it is important that the volunteer possesses initiative, collaborative skills and empathy to join the activities of the different projects. It is also advisable you bring your own laptop to work more comfortably.

Availability

This program is available all year round. For communications volunteers, there are no fixed hours per week. The hours are flexible and adaptable, they will often depend on the needs of the organization each week and the availability of the volunteer.

Location and first day at work

The Communications Team will coordinate and run their main tasks in the office located in San Telmo. Weekly tasks are organized in two meetings each week, one on Mondays and one on Fridays to discuss what volunteers will be doing during the week and to share ideas and proposals.

Spanish Level Required

The Spanish level required for this role is basic. However a good level of Spanish helps and allows better development of some tasks. The communications coordinators speak English.

Taking part in art-based activities increases our resilience and engages us in the here and now. You will be supporting people to express their emotions, provide a time for people to relax and feel proud of their final art products!

We are recruiting for a volunteer to support and facilitate an art and craft group.

We work with people who need support with their mental health across London and the South East. Our support ranges from registered accommodation services for people with severe mental health conditions to drop-in community and crisis services.

In the last year, 9,499 adults accessed Hestia’s mental health support.

We help people to feel safe, develop hope for a better future, and achieve their personal goals. These goals may include rebuilding relationships with family members and friends or connecting more with their local community.

• To prepare arts and craft sessions, involving individuals in the planning process where possible
• Inspire and motivate individuals to develop their arts and craft skills, assisting them in the creation of their projects and supporting them to brainstorm and use their own initiative

• You are an experienced grant writer or fundraiser with a strong track record of securing five- and six-figure funds from UK-based funders.

• You are familiar with funders such as: National Lottery, Arts Council England, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Esmée Fairbairn, Tudor Trust, City Bridge Trust, etc.

• You are passionate about racial justice, trauma recovery, and systemic change—and can translate this into compelling narratives.

• You are a self-starter, capable of managing your time, working independently, and contributing to team-wide strategies.

Role Summary: Supporting and providing information to clients across a wide range of enquiry areas including welfare benefits, housing, Social Care, relationships, and consumer issues.

What will I be involved in?

• Identify and research information and services to signpost that are relevant to the client’s situation, drawing on information resources, agencies, and other sources of information.
• Committed to researching and providing up to date information to vulnerable older people using the internet and other resources.

• Completion of the Adviser Induction programme which includes training courses on relevant topics. Followed by shadowing sessions within the I & A Team.

We are looking for a Grants Officer who can coordinate our grants team and support diverse tasks that include research, ideation and writing of proposals. In this role you’ll be a key contributor to the continued existence of Second Tree, a small, grassroots NGO that is dependent on grants to survive.

To do this successfully, you will employ meticulous time-management and organization skills, as juggling multiple tasks with competing deadlines is common in this role. You’ll also be able to work efficiently independently, managing your own time and tasks; and in a team, overseeing project timelines and ensuring deadlines are met.

You’ll have demonstrable writing experience and the ability to communicate professionally in English. You will also have experience researching and/or writing grants, producing content that is compelling and that will help Second Tree secure new funding streams. Finally, you’ll have an adaptable and flexible attitude, knowing that problem-solving and meeting tight deadlines are inevitable aspects of this role.

The role will include:

• Researching and identifying new grant opportunities on a weekly basis;
• Summarizing relevant grant opportunities and suggest how to best respond and comply with them;
• Researching information and data necessary for grants and grant reporting;
• Managing the organization of proposals and other documents created by the grants team;
• Supporting the development of outlines, timelines, staffing and budgets for grants according to funding guidelines;
• Supporting grants team with proposal writing;
• Creating timelines and coordinating team to ensure deadlines are met;
• Maintaining necessary records, files, reports, databases, and resource materials for Grants team;
• Working with the wider Second Tree team to ensure that all project proposals align with organisational, and program strategies;
• Establishing and maintain connections with funding bodies;
• Performing other duties as assigned;

Skills Required:

• Ability to professionally communicate in English (verbally and in writing);
• Ability to compile and maintain a variety of documents needed for the research, monitoring, development and submission of a proposal;
• Ability to read, comprehend, interpret, summarise and follow proposal guidelines;
• Ability to conduct thorough, high-quality, independent research;
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
• Ability to manage and prioritize projects effectively to meet team and proposal deadlines;
• Ability to work to tight deadlines with flexibility and problem-solving attitude;
• Ability to hold team members accountable to tight deadlines

Skills Desired:

• Working knowledge of project management techniques such as LFA;
• Ability to facilitate meetings and coordinate the work of teams;
• Knowledge of and experience with grant-giving bodies and other external funding sources (e.g. European Commission);

In addition to coordinating the grant team (not a full time position), your participation could take on many forms, from support in the education programs to the delivery of workshops and expeditions with the Youth Scouts – we look forward to hearing your ideas on how best to apply your skills in this context. By coming here, you would gain first-hand experience of the situation on the ground, working in a grassroots organization with a small but dedicated team. This immersion will give you a solid sense of our work, our mission and our approach – which would facilitate your ability to attract supporters.

We have two volunteer houses that can host up to nine people where long-term volunteers are accommodated. Some volunteers choose to rent their own accommodation. In certain periods of the year, demand is extremely high, and the volunteer houses might be full. If you have the means to pay for your own accommodation, please let us know. We would still be happy to host you if space is available. However, in a situation where the volunteer houses are full, this would allow us to offer a volunteering opportunity to someone that cannot afford to pay rent.

This is an exciting opportunity to delve into the world of social media, using social media platforms to enhance the online presence of Shelter Birmingham. You’ll be providing information, promoting our services, and increasing engagement with local and national campaigns. This role gives you the chance to volunteer across diverse and friendly teams, gain valuable experience in online communications, and put your own creative stamp onto projects. 

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to develop skills and experience within social media and who has an interest in social welfare. This may include personal experience of bad housing or homelessness which will enrich your knowledge, empathy, and authenticity within the role. 

Suggested time commitment:        

Location: This a flexible role, that can be undertaken from home or the office at times to suit you. During planned events, we may need a visible presence, but this will be arranged in advance.

Main Tasks can include: 

• Establishing and/or maintaining active social media accounts.

• Researching and creating creative content for different social media channels, starting with Twitter and Instagram, with view to expansion (you will have the opportunity to shape the role as you develop). 

• Helping to develop social media communication plans for sharing information that can help and support the local community.

• Liaising with the team in the Birmingham hub including to plan and promote national and local Shelter campaigns. 

• Identifying current news and issues affecting people locally around housing and benefits 

• Identifying target audiences and being up to date with current trends. 

• Attending events organised by Shelter Birmingham to provide updates on social media and making reels for Instagram going live on our Instagram account during live events. 

Skills and Experiences Required: 

• Confident in using technology. 

• Be familiar with some of the social media platforms and if needed learn how to use others use of various social media platforms including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Tik Tok and Instagram. 

• Good communication skills. 

• A flexible and organised approach. 

• Creative. 

• Ability to write about relevant issues in an informed and non-bias manner. 

• Willingness to follow Shelter’s policies, including Volunteering, Safeguarding, Data Protection and Health & Safety.
