The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based NGO that builds the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation modification (SRM), a controversial proposal for reducing some impacts of climate change by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth. Degrees is neutral on whether SRM should ever be used, but we believe that developing countries should be empowered to conduct their own research and to play a central role in SRM discussions.
This is a unique opportunity to shape global conversations on climate science by empowering researchers in developing countries to publish and communicate their work, collaborating with some of the world’s leading SRM experts.
The Scientific Writing and Publishing Lead will play a key role in supporting researchers in the Global South to communicate their findings effectively and contribute to the global SRM conversation. Working within the Programmes team, reporting to the Programmes Director, and in cooperation with the Communications team, the Scientific Writer will collaborate closely with research teams and external partners. Responsibilities will include:
1. Support researchers with scientific writing and publishing
- Develop guidance materials on topics such as structuring research papers, writing abstracts, and best practices for peer-reviewed publication.
- Train and support researchers to develop, refine, and publish scientific manuscripts through one-on-one and group training sessions and technical editing and feedback.
- In collaboration with the Staff Scientist, help build climate researchers’ capacity to prepare and communicate their findings to different audiences.
- Advise research teams on scientific publishing norms, including peer review, and open-access publishing.
- Support researchers in choosing appropriate journals and navigating the submission and review process.
- Assist researchers in adapting their work for public and policy-facing communication channels, ensuring clarity and accessibility.
2. Lead and coordinate reports and publications
- Serve as the lead coordinator for a recurring international scientific report, overseeing contributions from multiple researchers and ensuring deadlines are met.
- Act as a writer for key sections of the report, synthesising insights from researchers into a compelling and scientifically rigorous narrative.
- Work closely with stakeholders and coordinate peer review and fact-checking to ensure the report’s accuracy, consistency, and accessibility.
3. Support Degrees’ scientific communication and outreach
- Collaborate with the communications team to ensure that external materials such as blog posts, website content, policy briefs and media articles are scientifically accurate and up to date.
- Work with the policy engagement teams to develop scientific summaries and briefings for a range of stakeholders.
- Keep Degrees staff and researchers abreast of new techniques for communicating research results to a range of stakeholders and training them how to use them.
- Ensure that information from our funded research teams is shared with the communications teams.
- Work closely with Degrees’ Staff Scientist and provide support when required.
4. Manage projects
- Manage multiple writing and editorial projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Work closely with programme officers, researchers, and external partners to coordinate content development and align with strategic goals.

The International Growth Centre (IGC) works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. We generate new evidence and innovative new ideas to improve the productivity of people and firms, as the key driver of sustainable economic development, and to support our government partners in transitioning to low-carbon growth pathways and protecting vulnerable populations. The Economics Editor will lead the IGC blog and play a central role in shaping high-profile publications that translate complex economic research into accessible, engaging content for global audiences and media. About the role
We organise our Policy & Ideas work around the following issue areas: families, work and care; housing, land and climate; community, place and social security; and macroeconomics and fiscal policy. This role will have a focus on either macroeconomics or fiscal policy, or both, whole also working to support out other policy themes. We want our work to confront the immediate manifestations of poverty and insecurity but also the deeper social and economic conditions on which these rest.

We are seeking two Senior Economists, one full-time permanent role and one 12-month fixed term role, which could be either full-time or part-time. In both roles, we are looking for someone to develop and lead research projects that generate arguments, policies and ideas to address the social and economic challenges that underpin poverty and household economic insecurity in the UK today and chart a course to a different and better future.
You will devise, lead and deliver high quality economic analysis and thinking to JRF’s policy & ideas work and offer a professional economics perspective across the wider organisation – and as a trusted, expert voice externally. You will seek out and connect with people or organisations developing new ideas and strategies that can contribute to our mission; and to develop proposals for how JRF should use its platform and resources to support their development and diffusion.
About you
As a Senior Economist, we would like you to either have a professional economics training or equivalent professional work experience, advanced data analysis skills and the ability to use a wide range of tools and software to undertake large scale and groundbreaking economic analysis (including using micro-data from major national surveys).
With experience of working on policy issues relating to poverty, you will have significant experience of having initiated, designed, led and delivered projects that included original economic analysis that generated a different or better understanding of policy challenges and helped to guide new arguments and ideas. You will be able to think critically and creatively, analyse and problem solve, and contribute to the generation of new ideas and alternative ways of approaching an issue, able to communicate arguments and ideas persuasively, via writing and speaking.
You will have advanced knowledge and critical awareness of economic theory, principles, datasets and analytical techniques and how to deploy these effectively in support of understanding and addressing the drivers of household economic insecurity. With significant knowledge of one or both of macroeconomics or UK fiscal policy and a strong understanding of how policy making works across the UK, devolved and sub-national governments, you will have an awareness and engagement with relevant political, policy and intellectual debates, plus models and approaches to social change.

Reporting to the Senior Public Involvement and Engagement Manager and matrix managed within the Big Data for Complex Disease team, this is a pivotal role that will maintain and build upon an established strategy and programme of activities embedding the patient and public voice at all stages of work with the Driver Programme.
Your work will also support best practice delivered as part of the Public Engagement in Data Research Initiative (PEDRI), a vital UK-wide multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to facilitate a sector wide shift focused on establishing and advancing good practices for public involvement and engagement (PIE) with data-driven research and statistics.
You will work closely with public members, research and NHS communities, internal colleagues, charity partners, and funders to develop and implement plans for patient and public involvement and engagement.

- Work closely with the internal communications colleagues to create and disseminate engaging content (e.g. news stories on outputs and impact, videos, infographics, case studies) on our work and involvement and engagement activities using a variety of communication tools.
- Horizon scan and liaise with colleagues across HDR UK for opportunities to increase visibility of the institute’s engagement and involvement impact, i.e. through conferences, festivals, journals and other publications.

About the Youth Endowment Fund
We’re here to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice.
Last year, 244 people in England and Wales tragically died after being assaulted with a knife. Of these, 32 were children. Every child captured in these numbers is an important member of our community and society has a duty to protect them. Even when violence doesn’t strike directly, we know that the fear of violence has a terrible effect on children’s lives. One in 12 women will be a victim of violence against women and girls each year in England and Wales. Our Children, Violence and Vulnerability (CVV) research with teenage children showed that 33% of teenagers have encountered online content that encourages violence against women and girls.
The Youth Endowment Fund exists to try and permanently change things. To succeed, we must build an exceptional body of knowledge about violence affecting young people and how we reduce it. This knowledge has to be both rigorous and highly relevant to those making decisions about how to support vulnerable young people. We need to find out what works and what doesn’t through evidence synthesis, data analysis and qualitative research into children’s lives. We need to convert this into highly accessible content on what works, how delivery organisations need to change their practice and how the systems they operate in need to be reformed. We then need to work with the right people that can make change happen, across systems, policies and practice, to have a real impact on reducing violence affecting children’s lives.
Violence against Young Women and Girls
At the heart of our work is getting clear on what works. We are looking for someone who can lead our research and change agenda on violence against young women and girls (VAWG). We have built the foundations of this work by:
- developing our understanding of experiences of violence through our Children, Violence and Vulnerability (CVV) research with teenage children;
- reviewing evidence on the effectiveness of interventions that aim to prevent relationship violence and violence affecting young women and girls, which is summarised in our Toolkit; and
- ensuring a strong focus on VAWG prevention in our Education Systems Guidance and Education Practice Guidance, based on the evidence we have for relationship violence prevention delivery in education settings.
There is still a lot to do. We need to fund new research to fill gaps in our understanding of what works. We need to turn this evidence into actionable recommendations and sustainable change that will keep children safe from violence.
Key Responsibilities
The Violence against Young Women and Girls Lead will lead the VAWG research and change agenda for YEF.

Be the YEF’s expert on VAWG
- Making sure we understand the key issues, stay on top of the latest research and are connected to the right people.
Lead YEF’s research agenda on VAWG
- Commissioning research that fills important gaps in knowledge and leads to important changes in policy and practice.
Develop evidence-based recommendations on the prevention of VAWG.
- Drawing on research and expert insight to produce recommendations for systems and practice guidance, across the seven essential sectors that we work with: children’s services, education, health, neighbourhoods, policing, youth services, and youth justice.
- Writing and publishing evidence briefings and recommendations for policy makers and system leaders about how to prevent VAWG.
- Working across YEF teams to ensure that YEF recommendations on VAWG are incorporated across our evidence and change products, including systems, sector and practice guidance, the Toolkit and implementation resources.
Develop and lead a change strategy.
- Developing great relationships with senior leaders, policymakers, commissioners, and key stakeholders connected to VAWG across England and Wales.

- Partner with Finance Business Partners, Research Management, and FP&A teams to ensure data consistency and alignment
- Drive process improvement, automation, and reporting enhancements across research finance
- Contribute to TRAC and benchmarking analysis to inform strategy and performance
About You:
- Deep understanding of research finance, including income recognition and overhead recovery
- Strong experience in research grant financial management and reporting frameworks
- Skilled at financial modelling, data integration and building analytic tools (Power BI or similar)
- Knowledge of TRAC, financial planning, and the UK research funding landscape
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Experience managing financial change projects in complex environments
- A professional accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) and at least 5 years post-qualification experience is desirable

By joining our team as an Learning Design and Assessment Manager, you’ll be helping us to support teachers, champion great teaching and raise the status of the profession by supporting teacher professional learning and accreditation. You will be an experienced teacher or leader, with an interest in teaching and learning, curriculum and assessment. You may also have experience designing or delivering teacher professional development within an education setting or via an education-focused organisation.

Reports To: Associate Director, Professional Learning and Accreditation
Salary: £34,000 - £40,000 pa (depending on experience)
Contract: Fixed term until March 2026.
Hours: A full working week is 35 hours and we offer flexible working options; we are open to candidates on a payroll basis or freelance contractors on a day rate

The opportunity
As Learning Design and Assessment Manager you will play a key role in developing curriculum and content for our online courses, drawing on your experience and knowledge of teaching and learning to provide a coherent learning experience, ensuring that all content is of a very high quality and informed by the latest research and evidence. You will also support our accreditation function, designing assessments and supporting internal assessment and moderation processes.
There will be some flexibility in the role, meaning that we can tailor the work you will be involved with to suit your skillset. Working closely with colleagues in our Professional Learning and Accreditation Team, we expect that the Learning Design and Assessment Manager will:
- develop the curriculum and write and commission course content and materials for teachers and school leaders
- design training materials and, where relevant, directly deliver training and CPD to teachers and school leaders
- engage with education research to ensure the content and delivery of courses is informed by the best available evidence of effective practice
- design and develop assessments to support teacher certification and accreditation
- assess and moderate submissions; contribute to the ongoing development of robust assessment policies and processes
- develop assessment training and guidance for assessors, teachers, schools and delivery partners, as appropriate
- work with schools and organisations to support ongoing engagement in courses and programmes
- develop and implement robust content and delivery plans, overseeing projects and course development activity to ensure that courses are delivered on time, within budget and fulfil project requirements
- be provided with the time and support to engage in your own professional development.

- Educated to at least degree standard, with QTS / higher degree desirable

- Knowledge and understanding of effective professional development methodologies
