Why we need your help

The Marie Curie Dementia Befriending service is provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness that have dementia and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.

Befriender volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support.

What we need you to do

Your role will include, some of, but not restricted to the following tasks:

• Complete all initial mandatory Dementia Befriender volunteer training, as well as any refresher training whilst you are a Marie Curie volunteer
• Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, for example in a family’s home, in a care home or out in the community.
• Provide one to one companionship and support. For example - Offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in everyday conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Accompanying them to an appointment, social groups or taking short trips out. Helping with small daily tasks eg making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. Signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested.

(This list is only an outline as support will vary according to the needs of those using the service. Dementia Befriender volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)

• Driving clients to pre-arranged health or social care (eg to chemotherapy appointments or day therapy at the hospice)
• Follow all mandatory procedures that form part of the Dementia Befriending service. Examples include submitting written report forms, identifying and briefing a lone worker Buddy, and following procedures for lone worker safety.
• Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone
• Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
• Attend group events and training sessions for Marie Curie Dementia Befriender volunteers
• Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator as required
• Represent the Marie Curie Dementia Befriending service positively to those using the service
• Support with Advanced Care Planning for clients

What skills or experience do you need?

• Commitment and reliability - able to keep appointments and volunteer for approximately 3 hours a week

The Maia Service works with young women and girls living in Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Camden, Islington and Westminster. The support we provide is delivered through a range of activities, including 1-2-1 advocacy and a programme of group-work and workshops delivered by specially trained members of staff.

Why we need your help

Coping with bereavement involves painful feelings, coming to terms with loss and making adjustments in life. We are looking for a volunteer counsellor to provide counselling support to relatives, carers and friends of patients who are terminally ill or who have died. We are looking for volunteer qualified and trainee counsellors to provide counselling support to individuals impacted by terminal illness.

What we need you to do

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks: 

• Provide 2-4 counselling sessions per week for in-patients, day services and community services 
• Identify when the level of support may be beyond the scope of counselling and that other professional help may be needed 
• Identify and agree desired outcomes with the person being counselled and how these will be reviewed / achieved 
• To be supervised by a qualified external supervisor 
• Provide statistical records on a weekly basis to the hospice administration team 
• To follow Marie Curie policies, standards and procedures

What skills or experience do you need?

• Diploma in Counselling from a recognised body or a final year student working towards this
• The ability to deal sensitively with people facing or experiencing loss 
• To be emotionally balanced and self-aware as this is a demanding role 
• To keep up-to-date with professional developments in counselling and specialist palliative care 
• An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the actions required when working with people who may at risk to themselves or others 
• Supervision from an external supervisor and an ability to raise any concerns quickly

The Generation Trust, based at Guy’s Hospital in London, seeks new charity trustees to support its mission of advancing scientific research and translating discoveries into clinical practice.

The Generation Trust was created in 1982 with the aim of raising funds to invest in genetic research, with a particular focus on the work of expert scientists in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Guy’s Hospital, London. Initially the charity raised about £2m and it currently has reserves of £700k. The charity has provided early support for a number of projects leading to better understanding of a number of disabling and life changing conditions.

The science of genetics continues to make exciting and rapid advances in the knowledge of human disease, helping to inform diagnostic practice and to develop new treatments.

The Department at Guy’s has played a key role in helping to move scientific knowledge ‘from bench to bedside’ in the NHS, advancing new methods of preventing or treating a range of life-changing and disabling conditions in both children and adults.

Modern DNA sequencing techniques at Guy’s have advanced understanding of the molecular origins and characteristics of breast cancer, leukaemia, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and Huntingdon’s Disease as well as some of the rarer genetic diseases in children.

Funds raised by The Generation Trust have been used to invest in the early careers of the Department’s brightest young scientists, in PhD students or post-doctoral fellows, in pilot studies to ‘prime the pump’ for successful major grant applications and occasionally in capital projects to enhance the facilities of this world class research centre.

At the end of 2023, the Trust had reserves of about £700,000. The founders of The Generation Trust now hope to find the next generation of charity trustees to succeed them. We aim to recruit a small group who between them will have an interest in or, at least, a curiosity about the development of health science, cell biology, bio-informatics, DNA sequencing and genome analysis.

To sustain and grow the Trust we would like to add some expertise in investment management, charity governance and, ideally, access to wider networks of potential financial support in the City of London and elsewhere.​​

Marie Curie and Musgrove Park Hospital have joined together to offer a service to support people at the end of life. 

Spending time with patients and/or their relatives, we’re looking for volunteers to provide emotional support, a listening ear, and to simply be there for people at this very difficult time.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Support patients in line with agreed boundaries and procedures
• end time listening and talking with patients, family, friends and carers. 
• Signpost families and friends to other services, as appropriate
• Write and submit, to the Service Manager, a brief report on each visit
• Keep the Service Manager informed of any changes or significant happenings in connection with the client, either in person or by telephone
• Be an active part of the team of Marie Curie Companions and the wider team of MPH volunteers 
• Attend regular group support and development sessions for Marie Curie Companions

Role Description

We are looking to appoint an Honorary Treasurer who will bring new energy, new ideas, new perspectives, and challenge to enhance our financial management and development as a charity.

The Treasurer will be a Trustee and Director (SPAEDA is a charity and a company limited by guarantee) with particular responsibility to the Board for:

• Fulfilling the same role as any Trustee and Director
• Working closely with the Chair on issues relating to regulation and good governance
• Monitoring the financial administration of the charity and advising fellow trustees on all matters financial
• Overseeing the charity's financial risk-management
• Acting as a counter signatory to SPAEDA's bank accounts and as necessary on applications to funders

Role Overview

We are a small charity and handle a moderate number of transactions each month using an online accounts package (Xero). We have an online bookings system handled through our website and online payments system (STRIPE). Book-keeping is managed in house by the Business Manager. Monthly payments approval would be required, supporting the preparation of quarterly management accounts. More input in March and April for preparation of the year end accounts and additional support in January - February would be welcomed to develop budgets, templates and invoice codes for the coming year.

Routinely, we look to our Treasurer for:

Monthly - Approval of online payments, review of management accounts and reserves, monitoring cash flow

Quarterly - Preparation of board reports (quarterly management accounts), review of reserves, preparation of latest estimate

Annually - Preparation of annual budget and draft accounts for independent review

On a Project Basis - Supporting our Director and Business Manager with financial aspects of bids and applications – project budgets, customised spreadsheets and assisting with reporting templates and coding of invoices (as new projects start)

Our financial year runs from 1st April – 31st March with the reporting deadline of 31st December.

The Role

The role of the Board of Directors is to set QOLF Trading Limited’s strategic direction, monitor the delivery of its objectives, and uphold its values and governance. 

For this role, we are specifically looking for someone with a commercial / consultancy background. The appointed Director will sit on the QOLF Trading Limited Board with the Foundation’s Director, Matthew Morgan, and at least one of the Foundation’s trustees. 

Key responsibilities of the Director:

• Set and monitor QOLF Trading’s strategic direction and business plans. 

• Monitor financial performance for sustainable growth.

• Approve and oversee annual budgets.

• Ensure legal and regulatory compliance, ensuring governance and performance are of the highest possible standard. 

• Manage risks, conflict of interests and internal controls.

• Assess and address conflicts of interest, ensuring QoLF Trading’s activities do not compromise the charitable status and reputation of QoLF.

• Represent QoLF Trading among key stakeholders, sharing its aims, findings and achievements to further establish its profile and business opportunities. 

• Work in close partnership with other Directors and QoLF staff.

Commitment

The QOLF Trading board meets online for one hour on the first Monday of every month. Directors are appointed for an initial term of two years. The position is unpaid, but reasonable expenses will be covered.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Kempton Great Engines Trust as we embark on an ambitious programme to showcase Kempton’s vital role in supplying much of London’s water. 

Kempton Great Engines Trust is the governing body for Kempton Steam Museum, the home of the world’s largest working triple-expansion steam engine. The Trust supports day-to-day operations and drives the ongoing development of the museum as a successful and sustainable visitor attraction.

We have plans to expand the museum’s activities with new facilities for visitors and volunteers and the new Treasurer will play a vital role in shaping the approach to financial management in support of these new developments. You will chair the Finance Committee and attend Trustee Meetings, which are normally held every other month on a Tuesday evening at the museum in South West London.

The Treasurer oversees the financial operations of the organisation, working closely with the Bookkeeper. You will also ensure that legal and regulatory requirements are met in conjunction with the Company Secretary and Chair.

We are looking for someone who has the experience to advise the other trustees on financial matters, take a strategic approach to financial forward planning, produce an annual budget and management accounts and play an active part in the decision making of the board of trustees. A qualification in accountancy or equivalent senior level experience in financial management is required and experience of charities and governance would be advantageous.

Why we need your help 

Coping with bereavement involves painful emotions, coming to terms with loss and making adjustments in life. Many people find it a great comfort to have someone to talk to about how they are feeling during this difficult time.  

We are looking for volunteers to provide emotional support over the phone to adults who have been bereaved by a terminal illness. This role will be supporting individuals who have made contact with us through our national telephone Support Line. You will be helping them to explore their feelings and adapt to life post-bereavement. Training, support and supervision will be provided.  

What we need you to do 

Your role will include the following tasks:

• Provide short-term emotional support over the phone to matched clients for up to 6, 45-minute, sessions (normally 1 or 2 at any given time) 
• Actively listen to clients and explore their feelings around their loss with empathy and sensitivity
• Direct clients to relevant sources of information and support as needed
• Complete necessary documentation as required by the service (e.g. Confidential Working Agreement) and pass on appropriate service information to your supervising manager 
• Participate in one-to-one and or group supervision with an assigned contact on a regular basis (around once a month, by phone or skype) 
• Undertake both initial and ongoing training in line with the role, some of which will be face-to-face, some independent study. This includes attending a two-day (likely weekend) training programme.

What skills or experience do you need? 

• Ability to provide emotional support without judgement and within boundaries 
• Ability to deal sensitively with bereaved people and have an awareness of their individual needs 
• Patience, empathy and emotional stability 
• Commitment and reliability – able to keep to appointments and volunteer for the duration of a client match 
• An understanding of the importance of safeguarding and maintaining client confidentiality
• Willingness to learn and undertake required training and participate in support supervision 
• Basic IT skills and the ability, or willingness to learn, to use the calling system.
• Welsh speaking is desirable

Working requirements 

• A quiet and confidential space for working, away from distraction or interruption
• Access to a smartphone, laptop or desktop computer
• Available at the same time every week for up to 6 sessions
• Willingness and ability to travel within the UK once or twice a year for training and support – training will require a weekend, (overnight stay depending on location). Expenses will be reimbursed.

Our charity shops rely on generous donations made by the public to raise crucial funds for Marie Curie. From clothes, homeware and books, to CDs and DVDs, we sell a wide variety of products.

We are looking for volunteers to help us sort through all these donations, pick out the best items and prepare and sell them to our customers. Without the help of our dedicated volunteers we could not provide our customers with high quality items at affordable prices.  This allows us to raise funds so our nurses can continue to provide care to terminally ill people and support for their families.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Sort through donations, being aware of the possibility of a hidden gem and better quality brands
• Prepare items for sale by checking, hanging, steaming, sizing and pricing them
• Work on the shop floor and provide excellent customer service to our shoppers
• Operate the till 
• Help out with basic housekeeping to keep the shop clean and tidy

PIP works mainly in the Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster communities to support adults with learning disabilities and autism. Our focus is on teaching and learning life skills so those we work with self-identify as PiP students. Ranging in age from 18 to 92, our average student is around 34 years old.

PiP students have a range of learning disabilities including Down's Syndrome, Fragile X, Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), dual diagnosis with mental health problems and/or physical health conditions such as Diabetes and Epilepsy.

Role & Person Specification 

As Chair your primary responsibilities will include:

• Chair meetings of the PIP Board of Trustees, providing leadership and support to the CEO including meeting regularly to discuss current issues
• Lead the board in the performance of their roles and scrutiny of PiP’s work 
• Enable trustees to fully engage with their role, board sessions, and the organisation’s work
• Hold the CEO to account for the performance and financial sustainability of the charity and give appropriate support and challenge
• Oversee the strategic direction, financial management & performance of the organisation                              
• Provide leadership for the organisation
• Support in the income generation, communications, and community engagement of the organisation
• Lead on the appointment of trustees and CEO as required and ensure that posts receive appropriate induction, advice, training and information
• Ensure that PIP complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations

PiP is looking for an individual with the following skills and experience:

• Strong leadership skills, with the ability to think strategically and creatively    
• Good communication skills with the ability to inform and engage a wide range of audiences 
• An understanding of leadership, management and governance and the respective roles of the Chair, the Board and the Chief Executive
• The ability to understand and scrutinise the financial management of the organisatio
• An understanding of the importance of PiP’s work and our person-centred approach to addressing inequalities for adults with learning disabilities
