We are a local independent charity supporting older people across Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Ryedale and the surrounding areas. Our mission is to support people aged 50 and over to live independently, safely and well. Our charity shops raise essential funds to support this work – and volunteers like you are at the heart of it all.

The Role

As a Shop Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in the day-to-day running of your local Age UK charity shop. Whether you're helping on the shop floor, sorting donations, or creating eye-catching displays, your time and energy will help us support older people in our community.

This is a great opportunity to meet new people, develop retail and customer service skills, and make a real difference in your local area.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on your interests and the shop’s needs, your tasks may include:

• Customer Service: Greeting and serving customers, operating the till, and creating a welcoming environment.

• Stock Handling: Sorting, steaming, pricing and preparing donated items for sale.

• Visual Merchandising: Helping to create attractive window and in-store displays.

• Housekeeping: Ensuring the shop is clean, tidy and safe for everyone.

• Teamwork: Supporting other volunteers and working closely with the Shop Manager.

You don’t need any previous experience – just a positive attitude and a willingness to get stuck in! We’re looking for people who are:

Why we want you.

Please note: This role is only suitable for applicants aged,

18 and over.

We’re seeking friendly, reliable individuals aged 18 or over who want to make a

difference in their community. No prior experience is needed, as we provide full,

training. If you’re open to learning, enjoy working with others, and have a

passion for helping people, you’ll fit right in!

You have the time to become a volunteer in your community; you might be,

looking for work experience, the opportunity to meet new people, or keep,

active.

By volunteering with us in one of our amazing retail spaces

you will be raising essential funds for Oxfam – all whilst,

learning new skills and meeting some incredible people.

What you will be doing

Undertaking shop related tasks agreed with the Manager, for example:

Selecting, sorting, and pricing donated stock.

Researching valuable and vintage stock.

Photographing and listing items for the online shop.

Describing items for online listings.

Preparing items for postage and dispatch.

This role may include occasionally lifting boxes. We prioritise a safe

working environment and provide comprehensive health and safety,

training to all volunteers.

Age UK operates charity shops to raise funds for the delivery of services for older people in need. Volunteers play a key role in the shop team, ensuring our shops are welcoming places in the community and selling the items that are generously donated to our organisation.

What skills, interests or experience might be helpful in this role?

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning, will follow Age UKs policies and be an excellent representative for the charity. We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities, so we will do what we can to find a role which works for you.
