Responsibilities within this role:

• Provide oversight of the charity’s finance function through line management of the Finance & Governance Director and ensure our finance processes and systems integrate effectively with other business systems:

• Working with the Finance and Governance Director, lead on the development and implementation of wider financial strategies to guide the long-term financial sustainability of the organisation, providing advice and guidance to the CEO, and the Board.

• Anticipate the Charity’s resource needs as it continues to develop and consolidate, plan and implement the necessary changes in liaison with the Executive team.

• Work with the CEO and Finance and Governance Director, to ensure effective financial management and planning including the development of key performance indicators.

• Work with the Finance and Governance Director, to provide financial advice and support to YST’s trading subsidiary (YSTE) to ensure it is effectively utilised and managed.

• Oversee business planning across multiple income streams, allocating resources effectively and efficiently.

• Provide oversight of the HR and people development function through line management of the Assistant Director, HR:

• Work with the Assistant Director, HR, to lead the development and implementation of the organisation’s people strategy, including equity, diversity and inclusion, culture, talent development and management.

• Ensure YST has the best organisational design and appropriate resources to live out our values and behaviours, develop and support high performing teams and deliver on our mission.

• Support, develop and provide line management to, the Head of Implementation and the Business Performance Manager ensuring they and their teams provide excellent internal and external customer service.

• Drive excellence in the performance of all reports, building knowledge of their specialist areas and ensuring they are able to excel.

• Provide coaching and mentoring to direct reports contributing to a high-performance culture and values-led, mission driven team.

Young Start distributes money from dormant accounts on behalf of the Scottish Government to projects that are run for and by young people aged eight to 25. Since 2012, it has distributed over £60 million to thousands of projects across Scotland. 

You will be part of the Communications and Engagement team responsible for telling the story of our Young Start funding in Scotland to a variety of audiences.

You will also provide communications support and advice to a recently established Young Start development team tasked with ensuring that children and young people are better engaged with and centred in the work of the Young Start funding programme. 

Responsibilities include:
•Leading on all regular announcements of Young Start funding to the media and stakeholders
•Interviewing young people behind the projects to produce content for media features, case studies and online social media channels
•Supporting our funding teams to deliver Young Start customer communications 
•Managing the yearly production of the Young Start Annual Report, at the request of the Scottish Government.
•Supporting the Young Start team to deliver its work putting young people front and centre of the Young Start programme.

You will be comfortable speaking to children and young people about the impact that the funding is making in their lives and telling their stories with duty of care and a creative and engaging approach.

Role Summary

As the Director of Research and Public Affairs you lead a team working across the full range of research work (including commissioning, grant-making and in-house research) and public affairs work (including policy analysis, advocacy work and mobilising our activists). You also contribute to the charity’s strategies, leadership and governance as a member of the Executive Team. Ultimately, your role is to generate new knowledge; and communicate knowledge, ideas and emotions to change hearts and minds, creating tangible reductions in alcohol harm across the UK.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership, strategy & planning

1. Lead the research and public affairs functions at Alcohol Change UK.

2. Produce and deliver plans across our research and public affairs work programmes that are ambitious for change (impact), realistic given our resources, and consistent with our strategy, our other work programmes, and our values.

3. Set budgets, tightly control costs and identify opportunities for making savings, growing income and making the case for investment.

4. Appropriately monitor and evaluate our research and public affairs work with a view to knowing, growing and showing the impact we make.

Research

5. Work closely with the CEO, Policy and Research Manager, R&P sub-committee and Wales Office to determine and oversee the charity’s programme of commissioned research, research grants, and in-house research.

6. Ensure that all research is designed with impact-in-mind and, once complete, that it delivers on that impact through active and ongoing communication of the findings to the right audiences with the right messages through the right channels.

7. Lead the research function to be the central hub for the charity on the topic of alcohol harm and its solutions, staying on top of new research.

8. Influence the research spending of other agencies (e.g. NIHR) with a view to maximising funding into alcohol research in general.

Public Affairs

9. Lead and manage the charity’s public affairs activity, deploying the CEO, Research & Policy Officer and other staff as a team.

10.  Lead our work with external alliances, such as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Alcohol and Families Alliance, and on the APPG on Alcohol Harm.

11.  Develop excellent relationships with Parliamentarians, civil servants, charities and other important institutional actors in our field.

12.  Build Campaigner journeys for our engagement audience to best mobilise them to help us with our influencing work.

13.  Lead on the commissioning and management of any external public affairs agencies, parliamentary monitoring services and similar suppliers.

14.  Ensure our policy positions are kept up-to-date, based on emerging evidence and contemporary thinking, and consistent with our principles.

15.  Work closely with the Director of Engagement and Fundraising to effectively mobilise and deploy our activists, Community Champions and other supporters so they (i) make a difference, (ii) become better informed over time, and (iii) remain motivated to campaign for our cause.

16.  Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to influence all forms of media to better support our desired outcomes.

Team Leadership and Management

17.  Lead and manage the research and public affairs team(s), ensuring excellent line management.

20.  Act as a spokesperson for the charity at high profile events and across media, including radio and TV.

Shout is a free, confidential, 24/7 text message service for anybody to text when they may be struggling with anxiety, loneliness or depression through to self harm or suicidal thoughts.

Job Summary

To take the lead in ensuring that appropriate arrangements for keeping children, young people and adults at risk of harm safe are actioned at MHI as part of a Designated Safeguarding team covering the Shout platform 24/7. The role is responsible for promoting the safety and welfare of children and young people on our platform, being a consistent and reliable presence on the Shout platform, and advising Shout Supervisors on safeguarding actions and practise while raising and recording safeguarding issues as they arise. 

Key Responsibilities

• To act as an MHI Designated Safeguarding Officer.
• Contribute to developing and reviewing MHI’s safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures.
• Alongside the DSO, contribute to ensuring that everyone working or volunteering with or for children and young people at MHI, including the board of trustees, understands the safeguarding and child protection policy and procedures and knows what to do if they have concerns about a child’s welfare
• Take a lead role in implementing MHI’s safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures: ensuring all safeguarding and child protection issues concerning children and young people who take part in MHI’s activities are responded to appropriately
• Take the lead on responding to information that may constitute a child protection concern, including a concern that an adult involved with MHI may present a risk to children or young people. This includes:
  • assessing and clarifying the information
  • calling in and recording all safeguarding issues as they arise.
  • supporting and responding to staff who raise internal concerns as well as supporting those who make external safeguarding referrals to police or Adult / Children's Services
  • making referrals to statutory organisations as appropriate
  • consulting with and informing the relevant members of the organisation’s management

• following the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures
• Immediately referring cases to the Safeguarding Panel where there is a radicalisation concern

• Liaise with, pass on information to and receive information from statutory child protection agencies such as:
  • the local authority child protection services
  • the police
  • this includes making formal referrals to agencies when necessary.
• Record and retain child protection records according to legal requirements and the organisation’s safeguarding and child protection policy and procedures.
• Work closely with the management committee/board of trustees and Designated Safeguarding Lead to ensure they are kept up to date with safeguarding issues and are fully informed of any concerns about organisational safeguarding and child protection practice.
• Contribute to regular reports to MHI’s board of trustees on issues relating to safeguarding and child protection, to ensure that child protection is seen as an ongoing priority issue and that safeguarding and child protection requirements are being followed at all levels of the organisation.
• Be familiar with and work within inter-agency child protection procedures developed by child protection agencies working in partnership with MHI.
• Be familiar with issues relating to child protection and abuse, and keep up to date with new developments in this area.
• Attend regular training in issues relevant to child protection and share knowledge from that training with everyone who works or volunteers with or for children and young people at MHI.
• Attend team meetings, supervision sessions and management meetings as arranged.
• Hold safeguarding workshops and drop-in consultations for the ongoing training and support of MHI clinical and volunteer support staff.
• Work flexibly as may be required and carry out any other reasonable duties.
• Child protection leads must have received relevant safeguarding and child protection training that MHI require and that is specific to their role. This training should be refreshed regularly and they should keep up to date with any changes in safeguarding and child protection legislation and guidance.

Rainbow Migration, the longest-running charity in Europe dedicated to supporting LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system, is recruiting a Legal Officer to advise and help improve the representation of LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum, and help change the asylum and immigration system to one that treats everyone with compassion, dignity and respect.

We are looking for a qualified solicitor or barrister with valid practising certificate, or already accredited to Level 3 OISC, with two years’ experience in providing advice and representation in asylum including working in legal aid.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of the legal advice service. Under the guidance of our Legal Service Manager, you will also build capacity amongst legal representatives by designing and delivering training, giving second tier advice and developing and coordinating a network of practitioners working in this area. You will use the knowledge you gain in this role to help deliver Rainbow Migration’s policy work, such as inputting into policy papers and meeting with partner organisations when required.

We will also consider applications from people who do not want to do the policy elements of the job, but to instead focus on first and second tier advice. Please mention in your covering letter if you are applying for this option.

This is a unique opportunity to build on your experience as a lawyer to improve representation across the sector and create change in government policy and practice. You will be supported to develop as a specialist lawyer and in your policy skills.

Responsibilities will include:

· Deliver one-off advice to adult LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum and work with colleagues to refer them to quality legal aid and pro bono lawyers

· Provide casework assistance e.g. helping to prepare witness statements, making referrals to other specialist organisations and taking other urgent steps (whilst not representing service users or maintaining a caseload)

· Provide occasional advice (within competence) on other issues affecting asylum and partnership service users such as asylum support, legal aid, trafficking, family reunion or community care

· Deliver second tier advice to the legal representatives of LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum and other charities and professionals

· Work with the Legal Service Manager to design and deliver training to lawyers, NGOs and other professionals

· Write blogs and articles on asylum and immigration policy and legislation as they apply to LGBTQI+ people

· Contribute to policy and briefing papers

· Assist with preparing guidelines and briefings for legal services and pro bono lawyers

The Legal Officer will not be providing direct legal representation of service users. However, the role includes substantive advice and casework within the scope of legal support and referrals for our service users, as well as merits testing and second tier advice.

Contract Type: Permanent.

Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week). Working part-time or job-sharing will be considered. Occasional work in the evenings and at weekends may be required but with plenty of notice. Rainbow Migration encourages staff to maintain a good work life balance and has a TOIL system in place.

Salary: Starting at £40,175, with potential annual step increases up to £44,868 (pro-rata for part-time employees), plus statutory employer’s pension contribution. In addition to an annual step increase, the trustees consider giving a separate inflationary increase every April. 

Location: Remote or from Rainbow Migration’s offices in central London. Hybrid working will also be considered. The successful candidate could work from anywhere in the UK but would be expected to occasionally travel to London and other parts of the country for meetings and events. Annual Leave: 25 days per year rising after 24 months by 1 day after each year of service to maximum of 28 days per year (pro rata if working part-time).

Wellbeing: We offer up to two days of wellbeing leave to be taken at short notice in each calendar year. One-to-one clinical supervision is also available for this role.
