At Bookmark Reading Charity, we exist to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading.

We are looking for a gifted communicator and relationship builder to join our growing Philanthropy team as part of the wider Fundraising team. You will work closely with the Senior Philanthropy Lead and Philanthropy Manager to secure four- and-five figure gifts from current and prospective supporters, and provide events and general support to the Philanthropy team.

Job Description

• Manage and grow a portfolio of existing and prospective major donors and trusts and foundations, giving four-and-five figure gifts, to meet or exceed your personal and team fundraising target

• Deliver first-class cultivation and stewardship engagement activities maximize fundraising opportunities, renewals and uplift gifts

• Bring to life Bookmark’s work in both face-to-face and virtual meetings, as well as through persuasive funding applications and proposals that align with the charity’s strategic priorities

• Manage our two annual Big Give campaigns. This involves application writing, project management, reporting, and senior stakeholder management

• Support with the project management of high-value fundraising events, project visits and other fundraising events as directed

• Support the wider Philanthropy team with prospect research as required

• Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to deliver on donor engagement plans. Monitor outputs and outcomes to create timely reports for donors that reflect the KPIs of restricted funding

• Keep accurate Salesforce records, ensure compliance with GDPR and work with the wider Fundraising team to maintain best practice in line with Bookmark’s ethical fundraising policy

• Keep up to date with relevant trends, methods and developments which affect the charity

Essential skills and experience
 

• Exceptional relationship building and confident communication skills with experience in managing or liaising with clients, customers and/or charity supporters

• Excellent and impactful written communication skills. Ability to convey detailed information in a concise but engaging manner, tell a ‘story’, and adapt your communication style to suit different audiences

• Good understanding of high-value fundraising strategies

• Experience in planning and delivering events, particularly those aimed at high-value audiences

• Excellent administration, project management and organisation skills with the ability to be flexible and manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines whilst working under pressure

• Experience of cross-teamworking, particularly relating to projects involving multiple stakeholders

• Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team, as well as actively problem solve using your own initiative

Desirable skills and experience

• Successful track-record of securingand stewarding gifts from major donors, trusts and foundations or corporates

• Excellent research skills, including prospect research on a range of individuals and network mapping

Stella Maris is growing as a charity, in terms of income generation and new programmes of activity around the world. To help support this development, we have created this new important role. The Fundraising & Communications team at Stella Maris comprises about 12 staff members (some full time; some part time).  The team and the charity have now reached the point in their evolution where we need to appoint a Major Donor Manager. This post holder will offer excellent stewardship to our existing Major Donors. He/she will also help to identify and cultivate new potential Major Donors from within and outside our existing pool of individual donors. He/she will substantially grow the Major Donor income stream for the charity. He/she will cultivate and steward Major Donors to give in new and more impactful ways, will increase giving levels, will increase the number of Major Donors, and will create lasting and meaningful relationships with our most committed and generous supporters. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, motivated and effective Major Donor fundraiser. The postholder will help us, as a leading maritime charity, to achieve our mission to support seafarers, fishers and their families around the world.

MAIN PURPOSE

The Major Donor Manager, reporting into the Director of Development and working with some guidance from the Head of Major Gifts, will maintain and grow a stable pipeline of income from Major Donors. He/she will secure unrestricted and restricted income from a portfolio of Major Donors to support the activities of the Stella Maris network in the UK and overseas. He/she will produce cultivation plans for individual Major Donors, meet them, craft tailored applications and reports for them.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1 Manage relationships with a portfolio of Major Donors in accordance with the Charities fundraising strategy and giving programme activity.

2 Establish individual donor cultivation, engagement and stewardship strategies, ensuring each prospect and existing donor has an appropriate communications and cultivation programme in place.

3 Ensure that donor profiling and research activity is undertaken on existing and potential Major Donors (within data protection regulation guidelines) in order to enhance and develop relations.

4 Identify potential Major Donors from within the Mid-Value Donor portfolio and help graduate them up to Major Donor giving levels.

5 Working with the Governance and Executive team, conduct meetings and visits with individual Major Donors around the UK.

6 Accompany Major Donors on port visits within the UK and possibly abroad.

7 Craft carefully tailored applications, thank you letters and reports for Major Donors.

8 Support other senior staff and stakeholders, such as Trustees, in cultivating relationships with Major Donors by providing research and other information as required, and bringing them to meetings with Major Donors when appropriate.

9 Build and cultivate relationships with intermediaries, e.g. wealth advisers, lawyers.

10 Arrange events for Major Donors.

11 Ensure that all activity is recorded accurately on the charity’s Customer Relationship Management database, and that actions are undertaken in a timely and professional manner. 

12 Extract monthly reports on activity levels with Major Donors, e.g. number of contacts, meetings, asks, etc., and circulate this internally to selected senior staff members.

External Relations • Act as principal spokesperson and advocate for the Charity, working with key stakeholders, partners and funders to maintain and enhance its reputation. • Promote collaborative work with other relevant statutory, charitable/voluntary and corporate bodies to offer the best possible services   • Establish links and build relationships with key people of influence within Gloucestershire County Council, Integrated Care Board and NHS services. • When necessary ensure Framework documentation and associated contracts are in place to support work undertaken and appropriate tenders are submitted • Lead in negotiations for core funding,service specifications, and contracts. • Maintain links with other relevant organisations • Form and sustain links with relevant community links   • Support national campaigns that champion the issues faced by the vulnerable people the Charity supports e.g. Mencap campaigns, 

Management • Responsible for ensuring that best practice is followed in all aspects of people management from recruitment onwards in respect of employees and volunteers including regular training and supervision. • Be directly responsible for supervising members of the senior management team and other key staff as appropriate • Responsible for ensuring the requirements of the sponsorship scheme are met • Ensure tasks and individual objectives are fairly allocated to ensure delivery against the business plan. • Be accountable for quality, including with Trustees the risk management of all operational aspects of the charity business and for the accurate capture of data for reporting, record keeping and invoicing. • Oversee the development of systems, documents and procedures to support the smooth running of services.

Responsible for financial management of the charity including payroll instructions and pension administration. • Develop and produce relevant information for the monthly board of Trustee meetings. • Obtain all necessary resources and equipment. • Ensure the regular monitoring and evaluation of services, with a drive for continuous improvement. • Maintain any accreditations that have been agreed by the Board e.g. IiP

General • Ensure that the board of Trustees are appraised of opportunities and risks • Assist in keeping properties in a suitable state of order • Undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required
