About Action for ME
Action for ME is the only charity in the UK providing support, including healthcare, to people of all ages affected by ME. The charity was founded by Sue Finlay in 1987 and since then has been taking holistic approach so we can make an impact on multiple fronts - from amplifying the voices of people affected by ME in Government and leading on breakthrough research, to providing "lifeline" support and unique healthcare services on a daily basis.
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), sometimes referred to and diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), is a chronic, fluctuating disease, causing symptoms such as post-exertional malaise (PEM), sleep problems, problems with thinking and memory (brain fog), pain and crushing fatigue. There are an estimated 1.3 million people living with ME or ME-like symptoms, including PEM, in the UK alone.
Even in its so-called mildest form, ME can have a significant impact on an individual’s life, and not just on their health. A lack of understanding and awareness about ME means patients can experience disbelief, and even discrimination, from friends, family, health and social care professionals, employers and teachers.
For the first time there is an increased awareness of post viral illness because of the Covid -19 pandemic. After decades of neglect this offers Action for ME an opportunity to accelerate our work for people with ME in a way we have never been able to do before. The intent of everything we do is to pursue positive impact for the lives, rights, and futures of people affected by ME.

Overview
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time and the ability to capture, transport and store or utilise carbon dioxide will be crucial to ensure a sustainable, competitive and equitable transition to a climate neutral Europe.
The CCSA is the trade association accelerating the commercial deployment of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (or CCUS) through advocacy and collaboration. Our ambition is to see CCUS developed and deployed at the pace and scale necessary to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and deliver sustainable growth across regions and nations. We represent a wide variety of organisations with an interest in CCUS across many applications to decarbonise heavy industries, power, and hydrogen production, and remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere.
The CCSA operates as a not-for-profit company, overseen by a board of elected members. We have 20 staff across our London & Brussels office. We turnover around £3m. Our income comes from membership fees from our 120 members and sponsorship at our conferences.
The CCSA has grown by 100% over the past few years, as we have grown in profile and impact supporting the developing industry across Europe. For maximum impact we have focused on delivery, however, we are now looking at enhancing some of our internal systems including our finances. We have a UK registered company and a Belgium registered company, external accountants and bank accounts for each and a recently dedicated internal finance resource. We have some support from outsourced finance support, we anticipate this would continue, at least initially. In terms of accounting packages, we use Xero in the UK and Yuki in the Belgium office.
The role
We are a dynamic organisation looking for a part-time finance manager. We have put some structures and processes in place, but we are looking for somebody that will enjoy improving finance processes and helping make things easier for our teams in both offices. The role will be a stand-alone finance role without any admin support, so we are looking for a self-starter who works independently and is both strategic and operational and won’t mind invoicing/chasing debt.
The role will be managed by the CEO and other members of the senior leadership team.
Responsibilities
Finance management
- Preparation of accurate and timely monthly management accounts, including reconciliation across both UK and BE offices accounting systems and comparing the forecast out-turn for the year against budget
- Assisting with the preparation of the finance update for the quarterly board meeting working with our two external accounting firms
- Cash monitoring and reporting
- Working with senior managers to produce an annual budget with quarterly re-forecasting
- Supporting the CEO with documents/reporting for the quarterly Board and Finance and Risk Committee meetings
- As finance controller, develop and enhance the CCSA’s finance processes, compliance and systems, especially using tech solutions
- When required, liaise with the external auditors, ensuring that timescales are communicated and agreed, and the auditors’ requirements are met to ensure timely completion of their work
Finance operations
- Preparation and sending of sales invoices (c200 a year) and chasing aged debt
- Oversight of bill payments and expenses
- Process and post month-end journals
- Running the monthly UK and maybe BE payroll including liaising with payroll providers
- Ensuring payroll taxes, VAT and other taxes are filed and settled on time.
- Act as a point of contact with accountants, banks, service providers, and suppliers
- Provide finance support to the wider staff team
- Other ad hoc finance/operations duties as required
About you
The CCSA is very fast paced and has a ‘start up’ feel, so we are looking for somebody that is:
- Pragmatic and hands-on
- Able to work quickly and flexibly
- Strategic and eager to drive improvements and efficiencies
- Trustworthy with high integrity
- Able to communicate about financials issues especially to lay staff
- A self-starter who works proactively and independently
- Organised and able to plan work
- Eligible to work in the UK
In terms of experience we are looking somebody that is:
- A qualified accountant CA/ACA/ACCA/CIMA
- Has strong management accounting and bookkeeping experience
- Experienced in working in a similar role, ideally within a small company environment
- Ideally experienced with Xero and/or other accountancy-based systems
- IT literate with strong Excel skills
- Should have experience of working across countries and awareness of consolidating across different currencies.
- Maybe interested in sustainability, CCUS, working for a not-for-profit or (large corporation) membership body
Salary
Salary: £45,000 – £50,000 FTE (£22,500-£25,000 actual salary when pro rata)
Location/hours
This is a part-time role of 2.5 days a week (18.75 hours) and we are flexible as to how these are spread over the week. We operate a flexible, hybrid policy in both offices and for this role the successful candidate could spend 1 day a week in our comfortable London office near beautiful St James Park, SE1, or a remote role based in the UK, with quarterly trips to the London office. There may also be the occasional requirement to travel to our Brussels office a couple of times a year, to deal with any in-person finance compliance/banking issues. We are keen to accommodate the right candidate and open to discussion.

Policy research & analysis: synthesize research data, commission research, and stay informed on the priorities of national government, Greater London Authority and local borough councils, as well as those of funders, to provide members with strategic analysis and support in developing and influencing policy.
-
Focus on intersectionality: Promote the adoption of an intersectional, pan-equality, and human rights-based framework in policy areas such as the equality and human rights legal framework, climate justice and social investment.
Community & Network Development
-
Develop and strengthen membership model: Lead efforts to develop and adapt our membership and engagement model, ensuring it remains responsive to the evolving needs of our London network and the wider movement.
-
Equip grassroots groups: Work closely with grassroots organisations to build their capacity and influence on key issues, supporting them to engage directly with policymakers and participate meaningfully in policy debates.
-
Promote collaboration and capacity building: Promote collaboration among members, encouraging the sharing of best practice, strengthening their collective voice, and enhancing their effectiveness in advocating for their communities.
Strategic Initiatives & emerging trends
-
Horizon scanning and trend analysis: Monitor emerging trends in the climate, social justice, and community development sectors, ensuring strategies are adapted to address these developments.
-
Network expansion: Identify opportunities to grow our network and extend our reach, ensuring more grassroots organisations are empowered to engage with policy agendas and drive systemic change.
What skills and experiences we’re looking for:
-
Strong policy expertise: demonstrable experience of analysing evidence from a range of sources (lived experience, think tank and academic reports,) and working collaboratively with communities to identify the root causes of inequality and create policy solutions. Ideally in one or more of the areas of climate justice, economic opportunity, and social inclusion.
-
Community Engagement: Experience of working with grassroots organisations and local communities, with a focus on building capacity and amplifying their voices at local borough, London and UK government levels.

-
Strong understanding and demonstrable experience of public policy change processes at the intersection of UK and London government agendas
-
Proven ability to develop, lead, implement and monitor influencing strategies that drive systemic change
-

Emotional intelligence: High levels of emotional intelligence and resilience, including the understanding and ability to manage how lived experience of our privilege and inequality can impact in the workplace for yourself, colleagues and external stakeholders.
-
Managing staff: Experience managing at least one staff member, providing both task centered and pastoral support. The ability to hold and manage difficult feelings and conversations with tact and sensitivity.

Who we are
Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) is an international NGO that has been working with indigenous peoples and forest peoples since 1990. We work in 18 countries across South and Central America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, with around 50 partner organisations based in the tropical forest belt.
We work directly and in solidarity with communities and peoples, supporting them to secure their rights to their traditional lands, territories, and resources, protect their forests and ways of life, and choose their own futures.
The role
Consistent with our Theory of Change, Forest Peoples Programme’s advocacy and communications strategies are diverse and decentralized. They are generated in a largely bottom-up way with our partners, via our program staff (organised in country and thematic teams). This allows us to be sensitive to local social, political and legal contexts, and partner priorities. It also guides our highly collaborative approach to communications.
Communications at FPP is as much about facilitating exchanges among partners and between Indigenous peoples and forest peoples, as it is about communicating with policy makers, academics, and a broader public. FPP’s core principle of the right to self-determination means that we strive to ensure that FPP’s own ‘voice’ is consistent with the priorities and aspirations of Indigenous peoples and forest peoples. That we compliment and amplify, but neither diminish nor eclipse, the voices of Indigenous peoples and forest peoples themselves.
FPP’s communications team is embarking on a period of restructuring and reorienting. The goal is to become better placed to support a strategic approach to communications in our programmatic and country-focused work, while retaining a core function of handling FPP’s central/organizational communications needs.
As part of that restructuring, this new post of Senior Media and Communications Officer will serve a dual purpose of providing additional capacity in the day-to-day activities of the department, and taking a leading role in rolling out our restructuring plans. There may be some responsibilities around cultivating media relations, and/or line management responsibilities, depending on the profile of the successful candidate. The role reports directly to the Communications Coordinator, who will be working restricted hours for the first 10 months of this appointment.
FPP works with 52 long-term partners and allies, across 18 countries. The Senior Media and Communications Officer will gain a good working knowledge of the entire landscape, and intimate knowledge of some specific contexts in which FPP teams are focused. Fundamentally of course, we are all accountable to the Indigenous peoples and forest peoples we work with and for.
Initially, the role is likely to have a heavy focus on rolling out the new team structure and strategy, transitioning within a year to focus more on media relations or advocacy-linked strategic communications, depending on the profile of the recruit.
About you
This post would suit an experienced practitioner with a good understanding of communicating in a multilingual, cross-cultural, and highly consultative environment. Additional languages (especially French or Bahasa Indonesia) are a distinct advantage.
Essential requirements:
- At least 5 years’ experience in communications work in an international, collaborative, and advocacy-focussed environment. This will have ideally been within an indigenous peoples’ organisation, or NGO, advocacy or international context.
- Experience of work in multilingual and cross-cultural contexts and environments, preferably with indigenous peoples or local communities.
- Strong alignment with FPP’s vision, mission and values, including commitment to human rights (in particular the rights of Indigenous peoples and forest peoples), as well as interest in the interface between the rights of Indigenous and forest peoples, biodiversity and climate protection, political economy, and international affairs. An unwavering commitment to the self-determination of all peoples.
- Demonstrable experience of strategic thinking regarding advocacy, communications and media, and in planning and implementing projects in a collaborative way.
- Demonstrable experience of communicating complex advocacy issues and grassroots experiences in compelling, creative ways, to a wide range of audiences across a wide range of media.
- Strong media relations experience, at national and international levels. An existing network of relevant media contacts is a distinct advantage.
- You must be able to manage your own workload, and set your own limits. You will need to have the confidence to say no to colleagues, and the people skills to maintain positive working relationships while you do so. A positive attitude, and an ability to be sensitive, flexible and adaptable to changing contexts and evolving strategies, is vital.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with demonstratable experience of writing copy, editing and publishing for print and digital media. Experience in producing multimedia products (films, animations, graphics, podcasts, websites etc) is also highly desirable.
Applicants based in the UK or seeking to be based in the UK must have the right to work in the UK at the time of application as FPP is not in a position to sponsor visa applications. Applicants based outside the UK may be considered for the role on a consultancy basis, subject to local employment and tax regulations.
Benefits
We offer a flexible, inclusive, and supportive work environment. Our benefits include:
- 25 days’ annual leave (full-time equivalent), plus public holidays, and additional days off between Christmas and New Year
- Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
- Flexible working arrangements to help staff maintain a healthy work-life balance
We value collaboration, diversity, and the unique contribution of each individual, and welcome applicants from indigenous peoples and other backgrounds.
