Saving Strays is small, entirely volunteer led U.K. charity working in the U.K. and Bosnia and aims to alleviate the suffering of stray and abandoned dogs and dogs who are captured using barbaric methods and sentenced to death on death row as well as dogs abandoned in the U.K. when families no longer want them - a major issue since the Covid pandemic. The charity rescues these dogs, spays and neuters them and rehabilitates them adopting them into loving families whenever possible. Those not able to live in a home are given lifetime sanctuary.
We believe that every single life matters and we consider the different needs of every individual sentient being that comes into our care with the aim to do our very best for every single dog, to alleviate suffering and improve the life of every dog we meet.
We are looking for a social media content creator to join the social media volunteer team, contributing to our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), and Tiktok pages. The ideal candidate will be someone who is really passionate about the cause and absolutely loves dogs! For this role, you will also need to be organised, have great communication skills and work well in a team.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
Common Cause Foundation is looking for new non-executive directors to help us champion and reflect the human values that underpin our care for one another and our living planet.
We work in the belief that any proportionate and lasting response to the polycrisis will require a fundamental re-examination of the values that are prioritised in mainstream culture. We draw on an extensive understanding of social psychology to propose strategies for rebalancing cultural values, and we work with other organisations to prototype these approaches.
Established in 2015, Common Cause Foundation is a company limited by guarantee with an asset lock. We have three part-time staff who work remotely, each based in the UK. Our work is focused particularly in the UK, but we collaborate with people across the globe, and current and previous board members have been based overseas. Please take a look at our website for a deeper understanding of what we do and how we work.
As an organisation we are deeply committed to centring the lived experience and perspectives of people with minoritised identities. This commitment infuses all our work. At present, for example, we are pursuing workstreams on identifying ways in which patriarchal and heteronormative perspectives surface in social and environmental campaigning, and we are collaborating with networks of indigenous people to challenge and strengthen our work. We see the oppression of human and nonhuman animals as deeply interconnected and we work to challenge human exceptionalism.
We are seeking to build a board which can support us in applying an understanding of values to help resist oppression in its myriad forms. As such we are particularly keen to recruit new board members with marginalised identities – people of colour, people with disabilities, LGBT+ people, women and anyone from a working class background – or people with a particular commitment to challenge human exceptionalism.
You don’t need to have experience of being a trustee to apply, you also don’t need to have years of experience in the workplace or formal qualifications. We are working towards a better world, and accessible, inclusive systems that work for all; and for that to happen we need our work and organisation to be shaped by who we want to serve - and that’s all of us. We can provide training and support for anyone who wants to become a trustee. The organisation Getting On Board is a fantastic place to start if you’d like to find out more about what it takes to be a Trustee before you apply.
Positions on the board are voluntary – under the terms of our constitution, we are unable to pay non-executive directors for their time. However, expenses will be met – including, for example, to meet caring responsibilities while working with us.
Non-executive directors are asked to remain in post for two-to-three years, after which they will be invited either to step down or re-enlist for a second term.
Role Description
- As a non-executive director, you would be asked to participate in quarterly board meetings. In any calendar year, three of these meetings are held online, with the fourth held in person, in the UK, at a location that minimises average travel time for attendees. There would be scope for members of the board who live overseas to join part of these in-person meetings virtually, but members based in the UK would be expected to attend in person if possible, with all expenses paid for, including childcare or other accessibility requirements.
- You would want to maintain regular contact with the executive team, supporting them to deliver on our mission, challenging them to bring new perspectives and understanding to their work, helping to develop the organisational strategy, and promoting the wellbeing of staff and the effectiveness of the organisation.
- You would want to contribute to building a great working relationship with other non-executive directors.
- You would be keen to act as an ambassador for Common Cause Foundation with external stakeholders, advocating our work.
- You would be happy to participate on recruitment or disciplinary panels, as needed.
We anticipate a time commitment of roughly one day per month, but if you’d like to join us and this is a barrier to you applying, please do let us know what’s possible in your application, or get in touch with us to discuss.
Person specification
- A belief in the necessity and efficacy of the work of Common Cause Foundation, and willingness to advocate this to others.
- Understanding how privilege and power affect organisations, in both their internal and external work, and a commitment to identify oppressive behaviour and practices where these occur.
We feel that the work of Common Cause would really benefit from non-executive directors who can bring the following skills or passion for:
- Strategic planning - because we have identified long-term strategic planning as an area about which we need to think more deeply
- Financial management - because we currently rely heavily on one of our non-executive directors for support with financial management and would like to distribute this work amongst more people
- Fundraising - because we would like to diversify our funding to be able to better resource our work
- Experience of working in non-hierarchical structures - because we are in the process of moving to a flat hierarchy organisation and would love the support of a non-executive director to help guide this process.
- Experience of working towards systemic environmental/social change outside the NGO sector (e.g. in the arts and culture sector, in sport, or as a grassroots organiser) - because we have experience of working a lot with NGOs and museums, but it would be helpful to work with non-executive directors who have experience of systemic change in different cultural sectors.
- Experience of working within or with the media - because we have just embarked on a new project working on values in the media
How to apply
If you have any questions about the role, please get in touch with us. To apply, please send us a cover letter, video or voicenote saying why you would like to join us, along with a resume. You can send these by email. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the board decides to stop further recruitment.
Applicants may be invited to participate in an informal, 45 minute online conversation via Zoom with one or more existing board members and at least one of the Common Cause team members. The purpose of the conversation will be:
- to find out more about each other;
- to hear more about your interest in the role and how you feel you can best support the work of Common Cause;
- to discuss how we might work together and expectations of the role, and to answer any further questions.

Welcome from the Chair of Trustees at Farms for City Children
Are you looking for a role in which you can make a real difference? Do you care about connecting young people to the natural world, to food, and to farming? Due to the retirement of long-standing Trustees, we are looking to recruit up to four new trustees with diverse experience to bring a fresh perspective and skill set to our Board of Trustees. We particularly welcome applications from individuals with first-hand or indirect experience in charity law & governance, fundraising and/or event management, marketing, and farming. We are also keen to bring to our Board an educational expert with a focus on outdoor education, who can help shape our offering with the requirements of the UK’s national curriculum. Equally, we would love to hear from any interested candidate who has the time, energy, and enthusiasm to commit to our extremely worthwhile cause, whatever their expertise.
Each of our three heritage farms is run and managed by a fantastic team of farm-based staff, executive team, and volunteers, committed to creating a week of “muck and magic” for every person that visits: children, young people, teachers, and group leaders alike. Working alongside our dedicated partner farmers, these amazing teams make the charity what it is today - an inspiring charity whose vision is of a world where all young people benefit from being connected to food, farming, and the natural world – where access to the countryside is accepted as a right, and not a privilege. You can find out more about us by visiting our website.
You would be joining a Board that is passionate about moving the charity forward into its next 50-years of operation, delivering an immersive, life-changing, educational experience to our beneficiaries. Your expertise will help drive forward our new strategic business plan, developed in partnership with our staff, trustees, beneficiaries, and external stakeholders, that will determine the direction of the charity for the coming years. It is a stimulating, challenging, and rewarding environment for dedicated trustees and a great time to join our charity to support us on this journey.
The Board meets a minimum of four times per year. Three of the meetings are held on-site at one of the charity’s three farms’ premises: Nethercott in Iddesleigh, mid-Devon; Wick Court in Gloucestershire; and St David’s in Pembrokeshire, Wales. There may well be other meetings, either held on-line or in person, depending on specific needs. In addition to Board meetings, we encourage Trustees to participate in fundraising and social events throughout the calendar year.
As part of our strategic aims, Farms for City Children is committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion, and supports and encourages under-represented and under-served groups. We welcome applications from anyone regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, heritage, gender, sexuality, religion, socio-economic background, or any other difference.
Farms for City Children is, and must be, unconditionally committed to safeguarding best practice and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Consequently, successful candidates will be subject to a Social Media check and a DBS check at the appropriate level in line with our commitment to Safer Recruitment.
Whether you are experienced or taking your first step as a Trustee, we would love to hear from you. You will have the opportunity to use your skills, passion, and commitment to help shape the future of our charity.
This is a voluntary role with all reasonable expenses reimbursed.
Rachel Goult, Chair of Trustees
About Farms for City Children
Farms for City Children transforms the lives of children and young people through an immersive, residential farm experience.
Farms for City Children is a vibrant charity that delivers learning and well-being impact to children and young people from cities and disadvantaged communities through the experience of working together on our farms in the heart of the British countryside. Since our foundation in 1976, we have welcomed children, typically school groups between the ages of 8 and 11 years old, to spend a week on one of our three heritage working farms located in Pembrokeshire, Devon, and Gloucestershire. In the last five decades we have welcomed over 100,000 children and our current commitment to working with young people up to the age of 18 has seen us support 3,288 children and 620 adult beneficiaries in 2022/23 alone. Our commitment to reaching the most vulnerable and disadvantaged young people means that almost half of all visits to the farms came from children living in the top 20% most deprived communities in England and Wales.
In the wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the work of Farms for City Children has assumed a new significance. So many children and young people, especially those in urban areas, suffered badly during lockdowns, facing sustained periods of social isolation, with over-reliance on screens and digital relationships causing an increase in mental health and anxiety issues. The sanctuary of farm life, and the therapeutic value of the natural environment and of work with animals, is well documented. Farms for City Children has responded by opening our farms for more weeks in the year and extending the age group of its beneficiaries to 18. Partnerships have been made with new beneficiary groups, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and with community groups catering for older children and young people. The charity is now acting as an essential antidote to the negative effects of the Pandemic on children and young people. The charity subsidises up to 60% of the costs of the residential to ensure that schools and groups where the need is greatest are able to be included and access our offer.
Visiting children and young people are immersed in the natural world of food, farming, and countryside life, experiencing the benefits of collaboration, enjoying plenty of physical activity, good food, and fresh air, and discovering the magical rural environment that is full of new words, sounds, and experiences to inspire their creativity. All our beneficiaries participate in the seasonal tasks of the day: sowing, growing, and harvesting in our kitchen gardens; caring for livestock and looking after the land; and cooking up a home-grown feast in the farmhouse kitchen. They are never patronised by being given ‘pretend’ tasks: working alongside our staff and partner farmers, they perform the essential tasks that farming entails. They gain valuable life-changing skills that foster children’s independence and help them to grow in confidence. They learn teamwork, resilience, , and awareness that there is life beyond mobile phones and social media, and teachers highlight sustained changes to behaviour on the return to the classroom. Furthermore, they learn where food comes from, having experienced for themselves the field > farm > fork journey – hopefully, a pointer towards healthier eating, a breaking down of barriers between the urban and farming populations, and perhaps even an inspiration for some of the children to consider careers in agriculture themselves in the future.
‘Almost 100,000 children have been to one of our farms. But it should be millions. It’s a week that builds their self-confidenc...

We have worked with over 10,000 young people in our first 3 years across 22 London boroughs. British Exploring Society is a world class youth development charity with a unique heritage, founded on the belief that challenging experiences can transform lives, empowering and equipping young people with the courage, skills, resilience and determination to make the most of their future.
We prepare and take young people on expeditions to remote locations where they face challenges, gain skills and learn about themselves - as well as acquiring knowledge relevant to their lives and to the fragile environments that they explore.
The results are transformative – not just in terms of practical skills and resilience, but in a new-found confidence and self-belief which they carry forward to their future life.
More than this, through their adventure together, our young people forge friendships for life and become part of a unique supportive and continuing community of explorers with shared experiences, values and perspectives on the world.
We are committed to building an executive and volunteer team that together represent a diverse variety of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives on the world. The more inclusive we are, the better we think we’ll be at delivering our charitable aims.
We are an equal opportunities employer and do not discriminate on the grounds of gender identity, sexual orientation, marital or civil partner status, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, disability, or age.
If you are interested in applying and require any accessibility adjustments to the interview process, please do let us know when you apply. Thank you.
Upcoming opportunities for Knowledge Leaders
Science and media play an integral role on our expeditions, as such British Exploring Society recruits passionate, skilled volunteer Knowledge Leaders. These Leaders bring with them experience working with young people in remote settings and can inspire and facilitate the personal development of young people through curiosity in science, media and the environment they are in. You can read the Knowledge Leader role description here.
Working in partnership with other expedition Leaders, they will be responsible for safety, wellbeing and development of 8-12 Young Explorers. They will take lead on designing and delivering activities and projects including the John Muir Conservation Award, scientific fieldwork and creative media activities. Our aim is to recruit multiple Leaders, with expertise across these areas and allow Leaders to play to their strengths and expertise to design and deliver engaging, relevant and meaningful projects for our Explorers.

What is Alopecia?
Alopecia simply means hair loss. There are many types of alopecia, and the charity supports people with all types of alopecia, because the psychological impact can be the same, regardless of cause or type. The majority of people who contact Alopecia UK have Alopecia Areata, which is understood to be an autoimmune condition. Alopecia Areata typically appears as patches on the scalp and/or beard. It sometimes progresses to Alopecia Totalis (total hair loss on the scalp), or Alopecia Universalis (total loss of hair from scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes and body). This dramatic change in appearance, while not life threatening, is certainly life changing. Altered feelings around identity and sense of self can impact on confidence and self-esteem, resulting in psychological challenges being presented in many everyday life situations. What does Alopecia UK do?
Support – we facilitate peer support through our UK-wide support group network, online peer support platforms, national and regional events, and one-to-one support given to individuals via phone and emails. We also maintain a website full of information, advice and support.
Awareness – we educate the general public about alopecia through social media, advice packs, events, our website and podcast. We support various TV, radio, newspaper and magazine (both print and digital) media articles. We also advocate for the alopecia community amongst healthcare professionals and peer charities, with a view to improving the patient experience.
Research – we distribute research grants and lead our own research, with the support of our Research Committee and Lay Research Panel. We also support various research projects by helping to recruit participants for them. We build awareness of alopecia research within the general public, the alopecia community and the medical community.
Alopecia UK Staff Team
Following 10 years of being entirely volunteer-led, Alopecia UK moved towards having paid staff resource in 2014, eventually culminating in the Charity’s first full-time employees in 2016. The Charity opened its first office in the same year. We now have six employed staff, led by our Chief Executive Officer Sue Schilling. Our staff are skilled, enthusiastic, and passionate about delivering the Charity’s aims.
While we have a small paid staff team, we have a larger overall team, as we utilise a lot of volunteer help in order for the Charity to provide the range of services that it does.
