PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
BBC Children in Need occupies a cherished place in the hearts of the British public and is the UK’s largest independent funder across the children’s sector. We hold a significant voice on children’s issues and play a powerful role in improving the lives of children and young people.
This role is central to that mission. You will be primarily responsible for the development and successful delivery of the ‘We Move FWD’ Fund—a £10 million, 10-year commitment to address systemic racism and issues faced by Black children and young people. To date, over £4 million has been awarded to 66 projects across the UK, with grantmaking decisions led by young Black advisors.
Under the co-leadership of Alex Holmes and Mercy Shibemba, the Fund has expanded to include narrative shifts, storytelling, and celebrating Black joy and imagination. As interim Co-Director (covering parental leave), you will build on this foundational work and lead the strategic management of an additional programme focused on polarisation and division. You will ensure both programmes are aligned with BBC Children in Need’s charitable ambition and strategy, and that their operational delivery drives meaningful impact.

Reporting into the Director of Impact and Influence (Fozia Irfan), you’ll lead the day-to-day management of the ‘We Move FWD’ fund, ensuring equitable and ethical delivery. You’ll work closely with your co-Director (Alex Holmes), expert third parties, infrastructure organisations, and young people to co-create innovative funding programmes. You’ll also manage two programme managers and collaborate across the organisation.
In addition to implementing key strands of our long-term strategy, you’ll spearhead a new fund focused on polarisation and division. This is a substantial opportunity to amplify impact, build legacy, and ensure our funding reaches those most in need.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
Work collaboratively with Trustees, Executive team, and staff to provide strategic direction for both Funds.
Deliver and further develop strategic plans aligned with the Theory of Change for grantmaking and broader impact.
Ensure each Fund has a clear impact strategy linked to funding activities and measurable indicators.
Develop new opportunities and partnerships to advance Fund objectives.
Ensure equitable grantmaking processes that effectively support organisations serving Black children and young people.
Manage existing grants empathetically and build strong relationships with Black-led organisations.
Continue developing broader impact programmes including narrative change, power-sharing, and leveraging BBC platforms.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
Proven leadership and management experience, with a strong organisational approach and ability to build inclusive, innovative team cultures.
Substantial experience in developing and delivering grantmaking programmes/major partnerships, including broader impact initiatives.
Ability to lead in complex, evolving environments, with strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
Deep understanding of systemic racism and race equity, with a demonstrable commitment to anti-racism.
Lived experience working with and for Black communities in the UK.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
Experience in narrative change or storytelling initiatives.
Familiarity with youth-led programme design and co-creation.
Knowledge of polarisation and division issues in the UK context.

The Role

They do this by raising funds which they award to organisations having a real impact on those currently serving, veterans and their families. Military charities undertaking life-changing work need vital funds to support and sustain their work with beneficiaries.
One of the UK’s fastest-growing military charities, the Veterans’ Foundation was established in 2016 to support serving and former members of the armed forces, operationally qualified seafarers, and their families who are in need. Since its launch, the Foundation has awarded over £30 million in grants to nearly 500 charities and organisations delivering more than 1,000 life-changing projects across the UK. Grants range from a few hundred pounds to £200,000 and support a wide range of needs, including mental health, homelessness, poverty and social isolation. The charity is primarily funded by the Veterans’ Lottery, the UK’s largest single-charity lottery.
We are looking for x1 permanent full time (35 hours per week) and x1 0.5 FTE (17.5 hours per week) FTC (18 months) Grants Assessment Officers to join the Grants Team at the Veterans' Foundation. The Grants Assessment Officer plays a vital role in the assessment of grant requests and will maximise the impact and effectiveness of the Foundation’s funding by ensuring we are supporting projects and activities which are closely aligned to our strategic priorities.
The key focus of the role is the assessment of applications across our existing Grant Programmes, reviewing grant monitoring and providing appropriate levels of support to grant holders during the period of funding.
The post holder will help ensure our grant application processes run efficiently and effectively, carrying out thorough desk and UK-wide field-based assessment of applications made to the foundation. They will be a key point of contact for external enquiries to the Grants Team.
LOCATION: Home-based (hybrid), ideally based in the Midlands, to provide reach across the UK for assessment/project visits to monitor grant progress.
Key responsibilities:
- Undertake full and thorough assessment of funding requests, carrying out both in person and online meetings and tasks to ensure that detailed recommendations are written-up and presented for consideration within agreed lead times as defined within the schedule of Decision Meetings
- Work closely with the Grants Support Officer, helping to ensure that payments to current grant holders are released on a timely basis and within the context of agreed protocols and procedures
- Carry out monitoring reviews and visits of funded projects based on reporting provided by Grant Holders
- Assist with broader provision of information and guidance at the point of application and through attendance at funding/networking events
- Manage relationships with our Grant holders including working with them to resolve any issues raised during the period of funding
- Maintain relationships with our Grant Holders and stakeholders, to support them in resolving issues raised during the period of funding
- Contribute to the Grant Team’s ongoing efforts to innovate and improve processes which increase access and engagement for applicants and grant holders
- Provide support for Decision Meetings including preparation of Salesforce reports for decision meetings where grant applications are reviewed
- Assist in any other duties required for the efficient running of the Veterans’ Foundation Grants Programme.
Qualifications/Experience
- Knowledge of the Veterans’ Foundation, the UK funding landscape and current challenges faced by our grant holders and the wider voluntary sector
- Understanding of voluntary sector legal structures (constituted groups, charities and CICs) and their good governance
- Good knowledge of ‘Outcomes’ and ‘Indicators / Activities’ and their role in both demonstrating and considering the impact of projects
- Understanding of the impact charities are seeking to make and an ability to respond creatively to risks and opportunities they face
- Experience in presenting and/or group facilitation both in person and online
- Experience of liaising with grant holders or charities
- Basic understanding of current GDPR

Your responsibilities

Manage and optimise marketing campaigns, data, and workflows in HubSpot

We still do all the great stuff with resources and holidays, but in the last few years, we have sharpened our vision with a renewed focus to help the 95% of young people (primary and secondary school age) across the UK who have never stepped foot inside a church, to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus. We have 24 staff organised into four regional mission teams, and alongside our local and national partners, we’re playing our part in a network of organisations that seeks to reach children and young people in every context, across every town and city across the whole of the UK. Since 2015, SU has had a dedicated Mission Through Sport team which contributes directly towards this outreach to the 95. We have recently developed some innovative new resources, aligned with the RJ framework, which the post holder will be involved in both delivering and equipping others to utilise. These include our flagship programme called Holy Ground which empowers churches to adopt a local sports space in their community to connect with the 95 in their context. Half Time is our brand new Explore-Respond resource which uses sports-themed videos and fun games to help the 95 to explore the life of Jesus by journeying through Mark’s Gospel.
About Activate
Activate is a sport and physical activity-based programme, formed in 2018, seeking to build community through wellbeing that invigorates faith. Activate seeks to release God’s people to join in his mission through sport and physical activity in the areas surrounding Bushy Park. This includes gathering, encouraging and empowering local Christians involved in sports ministry, including expressions of chaplaincy and missional communities centred around sports clubs, centres, educational settings and gyms. A number of local churches across denominations and Dioceses have been supporters of the project.
In the past Activate has supported sports projects in local schools, an activity-based church service, wellbeing cafe sessions, exercise sessions for the elderly and youth activities. The successful candidate will be involved in re-launching Activate’s mission after a break due to staff changes.
About your team
With this role, you will have the benefit of being part of a national-focused sports team at SU, as well as the south team with a regional focus and the local context with Activate. You’ll work out of the office of St Peter’s Church, West Molesey, benefiting from the support of a local parish-based team including clergy and youth workers. Our South Region also includes our vibrant capital, one of the most multicultural and ethnically diverse cities in the world, with over 300 languages spoken.
