Work Location/Hybrid Working Pattern
This role will be based at our Head Office in central London. Mothers’ Union operates a hybrid working model. Staff are required to work an aggregate minimum of 90 days per calendar year (pro rata for part timers) at our Head Office, Mary Sumner House in central London. Tuesdays are our anchor days where every staff member is expected to be at the office. The 90 days includes anchor Tuesdays. In addition, Thursday is a core working day where part time staff are expected to work, either at home or from the office as needed.

In this new, impactful role, you will be responsible for mobilising and subsequently continuously improving a new network engagement and support function. The Director of Network Engagement & Support will ensure the effective delivery and operation of several formal and informal network engagement activities, for example Chief Officer induction. Whilst taking responsibility for providing team strategic direction and management to achieve objectives, the role holder is also expected to be a visible and constructive participant within both the wider Age UK senior management team and the senior team of the Network division.

Responsibilities
Strategic development and implementation

Develop and oversee an effective PR communications strategy, including business/trade press and public affairs (EU and UN advocacy), based on ProVeg’s strategic principles, impact areas and global interventions.

Be accountable for the development, delivery, and evaluation of the organisation’s PR activities.

Main purpose of this role
The Senior Public Affairs and Research Officer will drive policy change to increase surplus food redistribution by engaging with stakeholders across government, media, industry, and academia. They will support FareShare’s public affairs strategy by producing well-researched briefings, organizing impactful events, and fostering relationships with key partners.

FareShare is the UK’s national network of charitable food redistributors, made up of 18 independent organisations. Together, we take good quality surplus food from right across the food industry and get it to over 8,000 frontline charities and community groups. The role will sit within FareShare’s public affairs—part of the wider marcomms team—which is responsible for advocating for policies that create an economic and legislative environment that is beneficial for surplus food redistribution. The Senior Public Affairs and Research Officer will be critical in advancing FareShare’s policy agenda, as outlined in the manifesto. Working closely with the Public Affairs, Policy and Campaigns Consultant, you will lead efforts to engage influential stakeholders, create compelling content, and coordinate high-impact events. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence national policy and contribute to meaningful change in the food redistribution sector.
Key responsibilities
Stakeholder Engagement: Build and manage relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government bodies, media, and academia, to advance FareShare’s policy objectives.
Policy, Research, and Briefings: Develop in-depth policy knowledge and produce well-researched briefings and reports articulating FareShare’s policy goals. Identify opportunities for FareShare to feed into Government consultations and Select Committees.

About the role
To lead the business development function within Providence Row, achieving agreed business retention and growth objectives to sustain the viability of Providence Row’s mission. The post holder works closely with the Executive Leadership Team and reports to the CEO.
Key responsibilities
- Analyse and distil trends and key drivers of change arising from the macroeconomic environment, regulation, politics and government policy. Adapt the business plan as required to intelligence from the market sector.
- Establish and maintain a network of influence within commissioning circles at local and regional level. Create and sustain external relationships in the interests of the charity and maintain a strong external presence/profile.
- Understand the organisation’s unique value proposition and competitive advantage, and how to maintain and communicate this.
- Assess the relative strengths and opportunities for the charity within the sector, identify peers and analogous charities, understand their value proposition relative to the charity and build partnership alliances in support of business capability.
- Leverage new partnerships to diversify sources of work, expanding the charity’s presence and extending the reach and influence of the charity.
- Lead negotiations achieving retention of prioritised contracts on favourable terms.
- Actively monitor tender opportunities suited to the charity’s capabilities.
- Prepare compelling and competitive proposals that consistently position the organisation in the finalists’ list, provide strategic input to increase the win rate of bids/tenders.
- Ensure pricing and costing is competitive, reflecting the charity’s commitment to the delivery of high quality service and care.
- Research, assess and understand all sources of funds and funding mechanisms.
- Promote the charity’s work and vision more broadly in the charity sector, tell the organisational story in an effective and compelling manner, using outcome data and evidence of impact.
- Help to shape Providence Row’s long-term service delivery objectives and develop plans to achieve them.
The ideal candidate
To be considered for this role you should meet the following criteria:
- Senior level experience in leading on the retention and growth of business in the charity sector
- Confidence and experience in networking, influencing and negotiating with senior external stakeholders
- Skilled in drafting and submitting business proposals, written tenders and grant applications
- Experience of successfully implementing strategic plans
- Knowledge of the commissioning landscape and funding trends
- Experience of working as part of a senior team

You will have exceptional communication skills across all audiences, including working at board level, and have an excellent understanding of financial planning and reporting. You will be a natural leader, who can engage, motivate and inspire the development department, and play a key part in building a strong and inclusive organisational culture, as part of our ED&I commitments.
