Coping with a diagnosis of a terminal or life-limiting illness involves painful feelings, coming to terms with loss and making adjustments in life. 

We are looking for volunteers to offer emotional and/or bereavement support either in a group setting through facilitation of support groups, or on one to one individual basis. You will be helping people to explore their feelings and adapt to their new life after a diagnosis or the death of a loved one. 

This role is supporting patients and families who are over 18 only.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Provide emotional and/or bereavement support either in the hospice, in a small group setting, over the phone or at the person’s home, according to local resources.
• Actively listen to clients and explore their feelings around the diagnosis/loss with empathy 
• Pass on appropriate information to your line manager.
• Complete appropriate documentation as required in line with our confidentiality (service user) policy.
• Assist staff in the Patient and Family Support team when necessary 
• Adhere to hospice record keeping procedures 
• Assist with other related tasks when necessary

IHF is currently seeking pro-bono Graphic Design Firms and Individual At-Home Volunteers for our Graphic Design Team.

GRAPHIC DESIGN FIRMS and INDIVIDUALS will collaborate directly with the Director of Fundraising and Marketing. IHF materials are marketed towards multiple geographies, both locally in the communities we work with and on a global platform. 

An At-Home volunteer in this position will:

- Assist our Media Team in visual editing of content for social media platforms or website design. 

- Develop materials for our Fundraising Team such as posters, flyers, infographics etc.

- Create original volunteer recruitment campaign materials

IHF will provide all the necessary background and support for you to be successful in this position.

Video editing experience (specifically Adobe Premiere Pro) is a plus though not required.

IHF is looking for individuals who can commit to a minimum 2-4 hours per month with a passion for visual communication and ‘out of the box’ creativity.

At-Home Volunteers accepted to this position will also have:

Why we need your help 

Coping with bereavement involves painful emotions, coming to terms with loss and making adjustments in life. Many people find it a great comfort to have someone to talk to about how they are feeling during this difficult time.  

We are looking for volunteers to provide emotional support over the phone to adults who have been bereaved by a terminal illness. This role will be supporting individuals who have made contact with us through our national telephone Support Line. You will be helping them to explore their feelings and adapt to life post-bereavement. Training, support and supervision will be provided.  

What we need you to do 

Your role will include the following tasks:

• Provide short-term emotional support over the phone to matched clients for up to 6, 45-minute, sessions (normally 1 or 2 at any given time) 
• Actively listen to clients and explore their feelings around their loss with empathy and sensitivity
• Direct clients to relevant sources of information and support as needed
• Complete necessary documentation as required by the service (e.g. Confidential Working Agreement) and pass on appropriate service information to your supervising manager 
• Participate in one-to-one and or group supervision with an assigned contact on a regular basis (around once a month, by phone or skype) 
• Undertake both initial and ongoing training in line with the role, some of which will be face-to-face, some independent study. This includes attending a two-day (likely weekend) training programme.

What skills or experience do you need? 

• Ability to provide emotional support without judgement and within boundaries 
• Ability to deal sensitively with bereaved people and have an awareness of their individual needs 
• Patience, empathy and emotional stability 
• Commitment and reliability – able to keep to appointments and volunteer for the duration of a client match 
• An understanding of the importance of safeguarding and maintaining client confidentiality
• Willingness to learn and undertake required training and participate in support supervision 
• Basic IT skills and the ability, or willingness to learn, to use the calling system.
• Welsh speaking is desirable

Working requirements 

• A quiet and confidential space for working, away from distraction or interruption
• Access to a smartphone, laptop or desktop computer
• Available at the same time every week for up to 6 sessions
• Willingness and ability to travel within the UK once or twice a year for training and support – training will require a weekend, (overnight stay depending on location). Expenses will be reimbursed.

Volunteers will be supporting people remotely, in their own homes and in the community within Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and ideally, we ask all applicants to provide a minimum of 1 hour volunteering a week.

The companion service volunteer can choose to be:

• A companion telephone/video caller                                                               

• A companion within the person’s home

• A companion outside the person’s home

• Or a combination of all three.

Examples of the type of support the service offers include:

• Telephone / video calls for an older person/s on a regular basis at a mutually agreed time for a friendly chat. 

• Supporting an older person/s hobbies and interests or simply chatting with them in their own home on a regular basis.

• Supporting with digital access & building confidence skills & motivation to access the opportunities of the internet.

• Supporting the person outside of their home e.g., by accompanying them on a walk, to the shops, to a café, garden centre, theatre or cinema or other social activities / community groups. 

• Where appropriate, supporting the older person to access other services through information and signposting or referring to the Companion Service Coordinator for support.

We are looking for the following skills/interests:

• Individuals with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of older people who are committed to volunteering on a regular basis.

• Commitment to complete our Volunteer Report Form accurately and regularly. 

• Ability to travel for visits in the local community either by car or public transport for those volunteers who choose to participate in this type of activity.

• Digital literacy for those volunteers who choose to participate in this type of activity.

Please do note, however, that at the moment we are not looking for Volunteer Telephone Companions.

Could you use your social media, marketing and communications experience to raise the profile of a small charity? Help us to increase our social media presence and engagement, generate greatr content and help promote existing activities.

Our charity delivers a range of awareness campaigns and support services to patients, relatives, partners and carers who have been affected by a poorly understood pain condition; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). We are looking for 2 experienced social media and communications volunteers who are able to develop posts and campaigns from design to inception, create fresh and engaging content, increase engagement and to increase awareness of the charity and of the condition we represent.

Even though we are a small organisation we have big ideas and would like to draw on your experience in the communications world to help the charity deliver engaging content and communications to help us spread our aims and message to all our audience.

What Will You Be Doing?

• Help increase engagement, improve the number of followers/likes, create & execute a content calendar
• Produce fresh, branded and engaging content for our social media channels 
• Prepare graphics and text for sharing across channels 
• Engage with our followers and encourage interaction 
• Manage and maintain social media channels on a regular basis
• Support charity campaigns, marketing, events and fundraising activities by promoting them on our social media feeds
• Use your creative skills to devise games, competitions and other strategies to engage, grow, and widen our target audiences
• Develop publicity materials and communication techniques for social media to raise awareness of our chronic condition 

You will be working with the charity’s founder and Chair as well as with other trustees and volunteers who will provide an overview of our existing social media content, our brand and how we have approached our social media content to date. 

Experience
We are looking for a volunteer who has experience in:

• Different types of marketing and communications media, including electronic and social media
• Writing and editing marketing content for social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn
• Building strategies to increase social media following and /or build fundraising or awareness campaigns
• Developing a coherent brand voice for social media, from content creation to community interactions
• Using and setting up tools such as Buffer, Canva, Tweetdeck etc
• Creating and executing content calendars to help plan social media activity 

Skills Required

• Enthusiasm for communications and marketing and willingness to learn

Clinical Trustees contribute a plethora of skills, experience, and expertise to the Board of Trustees, assisting in the Charity's development to fulfil its mission and uphold its principles. The selected individual will utilise their understanding and proficiency in practice delivery and clinical governance to improve the board's oversight function in this area.
