Role description

As our philanthropy coordinator, you will play a key role in building new partnerships with philanthropists and high-net-worth individuals, with an immediate focus on the UK, US, and Europe. You will design and implement a comprehensive strategy to build a robust portfolio of individual donors, Family Foundations, Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) and other personal giving vehicles.

You will steward Open Briefing’s first global development board, working closely with our CEO and director of development to engage members around a dynamic programme of activities designed to make Open Briefing more fundable and findable. 

Together with our director of development, you will drive forward a multi-year fundraising strategy to resource our work with activists and organisations on the frontlines of human rights, social justice, and environmental action. 

Your primary responsibilities will include: 

• Designing and executing our philanthropy fundraising strategy. Lead a strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) —including through Donor Advised Funds, Family Offices, Family Foundations, and other giving vehicles—with an immediate focus on the US, UK and Europe. 

• Prospecting and donor acquisition. Manage HNWI prospecting, generate new leads, develop solicitation plans, brief senior leadership in advance of meetings, and coordinate cultivation and networking opportunities.

• Stewardship and relationship management. Build strong relationships with existing and potential donors through tailored stewardship plans designed to grow income over time. Manage donor tracking and communication systems. 

• Nurture and grow our development board - Work alongside our director of development and CEO to identify and engage members and steward the Board through a 12-month action-orientated development campaign. 

• Budget Management. Manage a programme budget for cultivation and stewardship events and activities.

• Collaboration and Communication. Work closely with our communications coordinator, director of development and programme teams in the production and dissemination of donor-relevant reports, updates and other content; and contribute to the conception and organisation of donor-facing online and in-person events.

Essential 

• You will have extensive experience managing a HNWI or major gift portfolio. 

• You will have a proven track-record of personally securing four, five, or six-figure donations from HNWI and/or major gift donors in the UK, US and/or Europe. 

• You will have experience working within a nonprofit focused on human rights, social justice, and/or environmental action. 

• You will have excellent verbal communication skills, including English language skills, both spoken and written.

Terms and remuneration

About the role

This new role will be part of our Supporter Engagement team, which includes Special and Challenge Events Fundraising, Community Fundraising, Individual Giving and Supporter Care. Our Special Events programme has expanded significantly in recent years, and we
have ambitious plans as part of our new three-year strategy. As part of this, we organise a diverse range of fundraising events, including a Comedy Night, Garden Party, Sports Quiz, Carol Service and Gala dinner.

Working closely with the Head of Supporter Engagement, the Special Events Officer will play a key role in developing and managing our special events programme. This includes overseeing multiple aspects of event planning and execution, collaborating with the Marketing and Communications team to produce high-quality event materials and ensuring that every event runs smoothly. Key duties

1. Leadership

Experience and Knowledge

Casework & Training Lead Officer

Amicus provides representation for those facing the death penalty in the US.  We believe capital punishment is imposed disproportionately on the most vulnerable in society, violating their right to due process and to equal justice before the law.  Our aims are to provide better access to justice and to raise awareness of potential abuses of defendants' rights.

We are not primarily a campaigning organisation; rather, we believe we can make the greatest difference through frontline work, including via our extensive network of casework teams working on a variety of projects.

We’re seeking a Lead Officer to play a central role in the busy Amicus team, with the position’s focus being on casework and on training.  The role offers a great deal of variety: coordinating our busy casework programme of projects, including supporting caseworkers and teams; and leading in the delivery of training and educational events, especially those aimed at our casework teams.

You will be part of a small team, which means we all pitch in to help each other when necessary. Workload will be demanding at times, an ability to work across multiple tasks and to prioritise will be essential.  Given the critical and highly sensitive nature of our work, attention to detail, meeting deadlines and quality of work all are a high priority.  You will be interacting with law firms and volunteers all around the world, making communication skills essential for the role.

This is a hybrid role; there will be a requirement to be in our central London office, generally Thursday and Fridays, as well as for casework briefings at law firms as required within the working day, alongside some remote working. Office hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm with an hour lunch break. We run two major training events each year that would require weekend working. We would consider part-time/job-share working for the right person/people.

Key Responsibilities

Support of busy casework programme:

• Working closely with the Casework & Training Senior Manager, other staff and volunteers
• Coordinating with US defence teams, and with the academics involved in many of our projects  
• Supporting student casework projects
• Briefing teams of casework lawyers from the UK offices of international affiliate teams
• Keeping close links with the US affiliate capital punishment firms
• Support in recruiting new casework volunteer teams and in-house volunteers
• Taking a lead role in driving casework-focused training 
• First point of contact for general casework enquiries
• Monitoring casework teams; updating teams on the progress of cases; keeping the casework database up-to-date; and producing reports

Amicus operational work:

• Biannual training programme: Supporting directly the delivery of this programme, especially in relation to the casework-focused elements

• Events: Assisting with the preparation, planning and logistics of awareness-raising events (often arranged around visiting experts conducting training) and of fundraising events
