Nearly 400,000 women experience pregnancy and maternity discrimination at work each year, with just 1% filling a complaint with the Employment Tribunal. For those that do, the process can be extremely stressful and intimidating, as they face a battle against organisations who often have the resources to afford the very best solicitors. We’ve heard from many women and parents who have shared the impact Tribunal claims have had on their mental health, with the process leaving them feeling burdened, alone and frightened.

We are looking for volunteers who have been through the Employment Tribunal process before, and would like to use that experience to support others during their claims. 

Our Tribunal Mentors give around 1-2 hours a week of their time to offer peer support to their mentees for 12 weeks.  They offer a listening ear through regular calls, and kind, empathetic support to help build the confidence to face an Employment Tribunal claim. Tribunal Mentors are not legal experts and can’t give advice on claims, however they are willing to share learning and insights from their own experience. To find out more about the Tribunal Mentor programme, click here. 

About the role

Role Title: Tribunal Mentor
Location: Home-based (UK)
Reporting To: Head of Support Services

Time Commitment

We ask that all new Tribunal Mentors can commit to at least six months of volunteering for approximately one hour a week.

Mentoring matches offer 12 weeks of support, this is usually through weekly one-hour calls. However there is some flexibility available depending on both the mentee and mentors needs.

Main Role Purpose

To offer Tribunal Mentees peer support and regular check-ins for 12 weeks. Mentors should be comfortable discussing their own experience of the Employment Tribunal process and offering emotional support to their mentee as they navigate the system and their claim.

Essential requirements

• Experience of filing an Employment Tribunal claim.
• Able to commit to at least six months of volunteering, for approximately one hour per week.
• Access to a mobile phone/laptop/tablet to receive calls. You will not be charged for calls and your number will not be shared.
• Access to a reliable and secure WIFI connection.
• Excellent active and empathetic listening skills.
• A kind and welcoming telephone manner.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

Key Responsibilities

• Communicate with your mentees regularly for around 12 weeks. This is usually done through a weekly one-hour call.
• Listen actively, empathise, and provide guidance and support for mentees.
• Signpost to further information and other support organisations if necessary.
• Connect with and support other Mentors on the programme, usually through our Volunteer WhatsApp group.
• Record all mentoring calls on our CRM system.
• Maintain professionalism in all interactions, adhering to all Pregnant Then Screwed guidelines and policies.

What we do

BoB helps build the “social capital’ of people who are on a journey of recovery from histories of alcohol, illicit or prescribed drugs. Many of our service users and volunteers across our fourteen London and South-East projects have associated mental and physical health problems, along with histories of homelessness and unemployment.

We largely operate a structure where we recruit volunteers from our service users, and our managers from our volunteer pool, once trained. Our CEO, most managers and some members of the Board have lived experience, and many have been through the drug and alcohol treatment system. This ‘unique’ structure, we believe, gives a high level of peer led understanding of needs and responses

What you will be doing

Purpose of the Trustee Role & Hon Treasurer

The role of a trustee is to ensure that the organisation fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries and delivers on its vision, mission and values. The board of trustees are both jointly and individually responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the probity of its activities and developing the organisation's aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

The Hon. Treasurer plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the financial integrity and sustainability of the organisation. Their primary responsibility is to maintain strategic oversight of the organisation’s financial affairs, ensuring that it remains viable, compliant, and well-positioned to achieve its charitable objectives. This includes ensuring that robust financial systems, accurate records, and effective procedures are in place and consistently followed.

The Treasurer works closely with, and is, actively supported by the CEO and Head of Finance & Central Operations, collaborating on both strategic and operational financial matters to ensure sound governance and effective delivery.

Time Commitment

Trustees are expected to attend bi-monthly board meetings (Tuesday evening) at Earls Court and participate in ad-hoc task groups and occasional on-line meetings.

BoB Trustees are Required To:

Uphold the charity’s mission and ensure its effective governance, strategic direction, and legal compliance. Their responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership

· Ensure the charity pursues its stated charitable objects as defined in the Memorandum & Articles of Association.

· Establish and maintain a clear vision, values, and strategy, ensuring shared understanding among trustees, staff, volunteers, stakeholders, and associated personnel.

· Ensure operational plans and budgets align with and support the strategic vision.

· Define organisational goals and evaluate performance against agreed targets.

· Advise on and support fundraising efforts and project engagement.

Stakeholder Engagement

· Regularly seek and consider the views of external stakeholders and service users, staff, and volunteers.

· Uphold the good name and values of the organisation in all interactions.

Governance and Compliance

· Ensure compliance with the Mem & Articles of Association, charity law, company law, employment law, and other relevant regulations.

· Ensure resources are used exclusively to further the charity’s objects.

The Hon. Treasurers Role

Strategic

· Assist and advise in the formation of the charity’s financial strategy, ensuring adequate resources to deliver services and that funds are spent on furthering charitable purposes.

· Advise on the financial implications of strategic and operational plans.

· Advise on the funding strategy and ensure alignment with the charity’s aims.

· Ensure the Board receives regular and appropriate financial information.

· Review and present the annual financial statements to the Board.

· Recommend appropriate accounting procedures, controls, and policies consistent with financial and regulatory legislation.

· Oversee the appointment and regular review of auditors.

· Work in close partnership with the CEO and Head of Finance & Central Operations to support strategic goals.

· Ensure appropriate investment and reserves policies are in place.

· Monitor the performance of investments.

· Ensure all assets are adequately maintained and accounted for.

Governance

· Maintain effective governance of the organisation’s financial affairs, ensuring viability and proper processes for financial records, decisions, and delegations.

What we are looking for

Our Trustee Board comprises people who have good skills and experience in, corporate strategic marketing and communications, health care, HR, information technology, research and legal matters. 

Our current Honorary Treasurer is standing down after seven years, and we are looking to replace him. The role of Honorary Treasurer is an important one, being the key person colleague trustees look to for professional advice about all things financial.  We have a Head of Finance & Central Operations who manages the day-to-day financial management and reporting systems.

This year we have introduced two systems to underpin our growth to a nearly £2m business. These are Xero and PLEO, with PEOPLE HR for our associated HR functions.

If you’ve experience of senior financial management and leadership, then you could make a significant contribution to our development.

Essential experience & qualifications sought

We are open to a variety of professional financial backgrounds and qualifications with, ideally but not necessarily only, charities and including current registration as a member of the:

About the Role
We are seeking a volunteer Chief Operating Officer (COO) to provide strategic and operational leadership across our national and local operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the COO will play a pivotal role in ensuring effective delivery of projects and research, maintaining ethical and operational standards, and driving continuous improvement across all organisational systems and processes.

This is a senior voluntary position ideal for an experienced operations or strategy leader who thrives in a collaborative environment and wants to make an impact in the not-for-profit or research sector.

Please note: This is a voluntary and unpaid role. There is no direct financial compensation or future paid opportunity attached.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide executive oversight of Policy, Ethics and Research Reporting, National Operations, and Local Operations (including projects and research).

• Oversee operational delivery to ensure smooth, ethical, and effective implementation of all projects.

• Lead the optimisation of systems, structures, and processes to maximise organisational efficiency.

• Ensure resource allocation is effective and aligned with strategic goals.

• Support and collaborate with C-Level colleagues to drive organisational progress.

• Attend high-level meetings and provide regular operational updates and recommendations.

• Act as a key decision-maker in operational strategy, compliance, and performance management.

• Support and coach department heads and senior managers to strengthen internal leadership capacity.

• Step in to provide hands-on support to other C-Level officers and direct reports when needed.

• Significant experience in operations management, project delivery, or organisational leadership.

• A hands-on, solutions-focused approach with the ability to balance strategy and execution.

• A collaborative, supportive leadership style and openness to learning and adaptation.
• An understanding of the not-for-profit, research, or policy sectors (advantageous but not essential).

Description

Youth Advantage UK (YAUK) is seeking a Volunteer Senior FOI Researcher. The successful candidates will be allocated to lead our FOI Team which supports our research projects nationally and locally by submitting and progressing Freedom of Information Requests. They should have excellent writing and speaking skills, IT literacy, and the ability to work well independently and in a team.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and oversee a small team in drafting, submitting and following up FOI requests in addition to supporting the research projects that require such data.

• Ensuring of ethical compliance and high ethical standards

• Coordinating the needs of various research teams with regards to FOI requests as support is required

• Drafting FOI requests: Write precise, legally compliant requests that maximize the chance of disclosure.

• Tracking submissions: Maintain a log of requests, deadlines, and responses to ensure timely follow-up.

• Analyzing responses: Review disclosed information, assess its reliability, and extract insights relevant to the research project.

• Appeals and reviews: Prepare internal review requests or appeals to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) if disclosure is refused.

• Collaboration: Work with other teams to align FOI requests with broader research goals.

• Reporting findings: Summarize obtained information and provide the data for progress by specific research teams

Requirements:

• Knowledge of FOI legislation: Understanding of Freedom of Information requests and proven experience in submitting them.

• Communication skills: Excellent writing and speaking skills, with the ability to explain complex findings clearly.

• IT literacy: Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite for drafting, tracking, and reporting.

• Collaboration and independence: Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

• Leadership: Experience of leading a small team, fostering motivation and accountability.

• Attention to detail: Strong organizational skills and accuracy in drafting requests and analyzing responses.

• Time management: Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple deadlines effectively.

The Plateful Café works to relieve poverty and isolation amongst refugees, asylum seekers and ethnic minorities in Lewisham. Our commitment is to reach the most vulnerable people in our community and help them access the support they are entitled to. The refugees training or employed by the Plateful Cafe will benefit from workshops, training skills and knowledge relevant for the catering industry. 

As a small charity, it is important to share information and updates through our communications and social media content, to help us fundraise and grow. We are looking for someone to assist us on creating copy for our blog as well as help with creating content for our newsletters, social media, print media and other promotional material over time.

With the launch of the physical Plateful Cafe taking place soon, this summer is an exciting time to join us.

Requirements: 

• Excellent communication skills in fluent English

• Has 1+ years experience of social media, copywriting, journalism, blog content creation, interviewing or similar skills (this does not have to include published work)

• Able to create interesting and engaging content

• Good computer skills

• Good time management skills

• Engaging and friendly

• Good team player

Desirable:

• Basic digital photography and editing skills

• An interest in supporting refugees and contributing to the work of Plateful Cafe

• Experience of working with refugees, people seeking asylum, vulnerable groups or lived experience
