HiDDEN is a dynamic and supportive network that champions Greater Manchester’s rare, overlooked, and underrepresented heritage.
This voluntary leadership role is a unique opportunity to shape the future of a dynamic, mission-driven network that champions the hidden stories of Greater Manchester — stories that deserve to be uncovered, celebrated, and preserved. As Chair, you will bring strategic vision, support strong governance, and act as a key advocate for the network at both regional and national levels. You’ll play a vital role in steering our growth, deepening our impact, and ensuring that inclusion, integrity, and collaboration remain at the heart of everything we do.
Key Responsibilities
- Governance and Oversight Ensure alignment with HiDDEN’s purpose, vision, and values.
- Oversee the adherence to the HiDDEN Code of Conduct.
- Facilitate the annual review of the members’ agreement and the Code of Practice.
- Meeting Facilitation Chair bi-monthly HiDDEN planning meetings, fostering inclusive and balanced discussions. Guide decision-making processes to achieve majority consensus in line with network objectives.
- Strategic Leadership Lead the development and refinement of HiDDEN’s strategic initiatives. Advocate for the network’s sustainability, identifying opportunities for growth and impact.
- Collaborate closely with Manchester Histories, the identified organisation for project management, to ensure effective implementation of strategies and initiatives.
- External Representation and Advocacy Represent HiDDEN at national and regional conferences, events, and within the heritage sector.
- Act as an ambassador for HiDDEN, promoting its mission and objectives to external stakeholders. Build and maintain relationships with key partners and funders.
- Conflict Resolution Mediate disputes within the network, ensuring fair and transparent resolutions.
- Provide impartial guidance and support to members to maintain positive relationships.
- Evaluation and Reporting Report on network activities and outcomes at planning meetings to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Lead the process for reviewing and adjusting network goals and strategies based on the needs of the network
Person Specification
Experience:
- You may have gained experience in leadership, governance, or planning through a variety of paths — including study, early career roles, volunteering, activism, or community engagement.
- A background in the heritage, cultural, or nonprofit sectors is helpful but not essential. We value lived experience and insight into the challenges and opportunities facing small or underrepresented organisations.
- Skills and Attributes: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to facilitate inclusive discussions and achieve consensus.
- Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to act impartially and mediate conflicts.
- Passion for heritage and a commitment to HiDDEN’s values of inclusivity, knowledge sharing, and environmental responsibility.
- Commitment: Willingness to commit 1-2 days per month, including participation in bi-monthly planning meetings.

Student Trustees
Are you a current University of York student with a passion for representation? As a Student Trustee, your knowledge of the student experience will be key in ensuring student voices are central to our strategy and that we deliver the best possible experience for all University of York students. We welcome applications from all registered students, regardless of year, study mode, or background. Whilst we ask that student trustees are available for a minimum of one academic year, student trustees can serve up to 2 consecutive terms of up to 2 years but must be a registered student throughout.

As our Trustees govern the organisation, and are registered as company directors with Companies House, there are a number of verification steps that we will need to comply with. These are unpaid volunteer opportunities; however, reasonable out of pocket expenses will be paid. The broad time commitment is for attendance (virtually or in person) at approximately 8 meetings/events per year.

East London Waterworks Park is looking for volunteers to lead social media and content creation for communications and campaigning for our community-owned park.
East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces.
We are looking for social media and content creator leads to participate in our community-led working group who are promoting public awareness and support of the project.
There is opportunity to lead on projects across communications, content creation, social media, PR, newsletters, film, podcasts or any other channels of interest, and facilitate the direction of the working group.
The Comms Circle currently meets fortnightly on a Tuesday evening on Google Meet and spends voluntary time outside of the meeting completing agreed tasks remotely.
You will be at the forefront of our digital strategy to create a huge new biodiverse park and natural swimming ponds. We’re looking for creative and strategic thinkers who can craft compelling narratives and visually stunning content. You should have a deep understanding of social media platforms and analytics tools to measure and optimize our campaigns. Your ability to build and engage with online communities is crucial, as is your skill in managing media relations. What will I be doing?

Help us grow our young charity to get more children learning about germinating, nurturing, cooking and tasting food grown in nature, together with outdoor woodland activities. This important part of learning is not yet in the national curriculum and school budgets are tight, so we need to fundraise. We have three other trustees and three executive staff including the two founders. We hold at least quarterly virtual meetings which we'd wish you to attend.
Most of our work is in West London schools but we also plant large numbers of trees, recenty in a London Park, involving local community volunteers and children from the local schools..
