The Financial Accountant will be a key member in our Finance and Performance team, part of Corporate Services, which supports the capabilities and programmes to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

It is an excellent opportunity to join our small and dedicated finance team. We are looking for a strong technical professional, whose financial expertise and specialist knowledge are a given. The main purpose of the role is to provide technical financial accounting support, with a focus on VAT and HMRC submissions, preparation of statutory accounts and its related trading subsidiary to comply with regulatory and external stakeholder reporting requirements. The role will support the month end tasks to produce the monthly management accounts including the balance sheet reconciliation, working closely with the finance team.

You will: 

· Monitor, maintain, and improve internal financial controls

· Submit quarterly VAT returns

· Prepare the weekly cashflow and cashflow forecasting

· Prepare the balance sheet reconciliations working closely with the team to follow up any differences

You: 

· You will have strong knowledge of the Charity SORP, FRS102 and charity VAT

· You will have experience of general ledger and transactional accounting activities including exposure to the balance sheet, accruals, prepayments, journals.

· You will be someone who has strong attention to detail to avoid data errors.

· You will be able to work to deadlines and manage priorities whilst working independently

· You will have excellent IT literacy, with intermediate Microsoft Excel skills and experience of working with finance systems

Financial Operations Lead | Permanent | London - Hybrid | £43,941 + Benefits

For a well-known UK charity, we're recruiting a Financial Operations Lead on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Financial Operations Lead will oversee all processing and reconciliation of financial transactions, accruals and prepayments, as well as VAT returns, and all day-to-day banking, credit card and investment matters. The Financial Operations Lead is a key role, supporting staff queries, liaising with HR on payroll returns, and supporting the development of robust month-end processes across the team.

What you'll be doing:

• Financial Transactions - support AP processing, and approval of invoices on the AR ledger
• Prepare payroll journals and reconcile all payroll information
• Prepare accruals and prepayments for income and expenditure and support month-end accounts
• Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and VAT returns
• Support year-end with the preparation of note to the accounts including payroll, banking, fixed assets and investments
• Liaise with bank, investment fund managers and credit card providers
• Support wider teams with finance queries, and financial compliance procedures

Role Overview: Knowledge in grant-funding, capacity building, organisational support

We are seeking a proactive and collaborative Charity Support Officer to help deliver AWN’s mission. You will be the first point of contact for grassroots charities, supporting them to strengthen their organisations and improve their chances of securing grant funding by offering practical guidance, signposting, and building trusted relationships that help them grow in confidence and resilience. The role includes helping organisations strengthen governance and compliance, sharing information on grant-funding opportunities, and supporting them to identify challenges and develop practical solutions.
 
The non-profits you will support work across a wide range of areas for example: women, health and wellbeing, youth, homelessness and poverty, family services, sports, faith groups, crime and gangs, prisoners and ex-offenders, refugees and asylum seekers, drug addiction, older people and rehabilitation, and many more. 
 
Bringing a strong awareness of the barriers facing small charities particularly Muslim-led groups, will be key to helping them build long-term sustainability and impact. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Act as the first point of contact for charities and community groups, managing a varied caseload and balancing priorities. 

• Carry out needs assessments to understand organisations strengths, challenges, and funding needs, and develop clear action plans. 

• Provide tailored support, including health checks on governance, compliance, finances, and funding readiness, offering recommendations and signposting to specialist services (e.g., Cranfield Trust, CVS, Charity Excellence etc). 

• Advise on funding opportunities, strategy, and application readiness, with referrals to bid-writing support where needed. 

• Deliver workshops, webinars, events, and one-to-one sessions to build skills, knowledge, and confidence of UK grassroots organisations. 

• Work collaboratively with organisations and AWN colleagues (including via the triage and referral system) to identify challenges and develop practical, sustainable solutions. 

• Build and maintain strong relationships with charities, funders, and sector partners across the voluntary, public, and charity sectors. 

• Represent AWN at external events, conferences, and meetings, helping to organise and deliver events linked to your work. 

• Keep accurate records on the CRM, gather feedback, write case studies, and contribute to monitoring, evaluation, and service development. 

• Support AWN’s communications by contributing updates for the website and social media.

Alongside these personal qualities, you’ll bring a good understanding of the charity sector and the challenges facing small non-profits across the UK, for UK Muslim-led organisations. You’ll have exceptional knowledge of governance, compliance, and funding pathways, and the confidence to guide organisations towards growth, resilience, and long-term impact. 

Essential Criteria 

• 3+ years’ experience within the UK charity sector (domestic, not solely international). 

• Strong understanding of charity governance, compliance, and the UK funding and grant-making landscape. 

• Insight into the needs and challenges of small and grassroots non-profits, with awareness of the systemic barriers affecting Muslim-led organisations. 

• Experience supporting or advising charities, community groups, or local networks to build capacity and resilience. 

• Ability to work collaboratively with organisations, offering constructive and practical guidance. 

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with confidence in public speaking and engaging a wide range of stakeholders. 

• Strong organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities. 

• Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.  

• Comfortable working autonomously and as part of a small team, with minimal supervision. 

• Confident using technology to deliver support and manage work effectively, including CRM systems, Microsoft Teams, and other digital tools. 

• Experience in one or more of the following areas: 
  - Community engagement and outreach 
  - Event or project coordination (online and in-person) 
  - Delivering presentations, workshops, or training sessions 
  - Monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities 

Recruitment Process 

Interviews will take place early October 2025. 

The process will include two stages: one online and one in-person (to be held in the City of London).

Part time (4 days a week) pro rated salary range - £24000 - £27200 per year.

The role of the Central Charity is to facilitate member support and the successful operation of the Charity, lead strategic objects that work to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the global movement and to support the delivery of impactful work in communities that meet our aims. Like many membership organisations, we need to focus on turning membership decline into membership growth. This role is an integral part of an exciting opportunity to change and secure the future of the movement. 2026 is our 150th Anniversary, a year to celebrate and focus on growing the movement in Britain and Ireland.

The post holder will work directly with members and support the rest of the Membership Team. Focus will be on managing membership using our new CRM, supporting membership, faith and programme enquiries, initiatives, and operational delivery, supporting Communities of Interest (our member-based forums),

Main responsibilities

Membership Support

• Manage membership enquiries (average across team of 25 emails daily).
• Manage membership - using, inputting, and reporting via our CRM.
• Facilitate and coordinate faith and membership resources and content delivery.
• Support the charity’s Communities of Interest (representative membership groups).
• Lead the administration of national and regional events.
• Support national programme and membership engagement activities.

General

• To produce and provide reports and resources as required for the Director of Membership
• To work across the charity on supporting the incorporation of membership outputs and content in relevant areas of the wider work of the global charity.
• To undertake any other duties as requested by the Director of Membership.

Core Competencies

Skills & Experience

• Membership Management: Experience of using CRMs and managing enquiries.
• Membership Support: Experience working directly with customers/members.
• Event administration: Experience of working on the delivery of events and external activities.
• Committee/forum administration: Ability to organise meetings and take notes and actions.
• Computer and IT skills: MS applications. CRM experience, use and reporting. Zoom/Team meeting platforms. Survey software. Social media posting.

Work Location/Hybrid Working Pattern

This role will be based at our Head Office in central London. Mothers’ Union operates a hybrid working model. Staff are required to work an aggregate minimum of 90 days per calendar year (pro rata for part timers) at our Head Office, Mary Sumner House in central London. Tuesdays are our anchor days where every staff member is expected to be at the office. The 90 days includes anchor Tuesdays. In addition, Thursday is a core working day where part time staff are expected to work, either at home or from the office as needed.
