The Sociological Review Foundation, a registered charity that exists to advance public education on the subject of sociology and related disciplines, is looking to appoint an individual to join the Board of Trustees during an exciting time of organisational growth and development. We are looking to appoint a trustee with experience in fundraising, partnerships and marketing/enterprise development.

What We’re Looking For

We are inviting expressions of interest from individuals who bring experience in one or more of the following:

· Fundraising, philanthropy or donor engagement

· Corporate or academic partnerships

· Social enterprise or charity income generation

· Marketing or strategic communications in the non-profit sector

Your responsibilities as a trustee will include the following:

● To work with other trustees to ensure that the Foundation complies with its articles of association, pursues and works within its mission and charitable objectives, functions within relevant legal and financial requirements, and applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives

● To provide guidance on the Foundation’s fundraising, partnership and income generation strategy in collaboration with the Deputy CEO Fundraising

● To support the development of sustainable funding models and strategic growth initiatives

● To offer insight into market positioning and audience engagement

● To be aware of, and conform to, the responsibilities of a trustee and company director

● To participate in at least three Board meetings each year, as well as the Annual General Meeting. Some of these meetings will take place on Zoom, others in person (in London or other cities in England)

● To commit up to one hour per week on average to the role, including Board meetings

● To play an ambassadorial role and promote the Foundation

● To act in the best interests of the charity and to comply at all times with its policies and procedures.

This is not a paid position; however, travel and any childcare expenses while on trustee business will be covered in line with our expenses claim policy.

Previous experience as a charity trustee is desirable but not essential. You will receive training on the duties and responsibilities of trustees at the beginning of your appointment.

Founded in 2003 and originally named Andrea’s Gift and later Brain Tumour Research and Support

Across Yorkshire, Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC) is Yorkshire and Humber’s leading

brain tumour charity. Offering practical, financial and emotional support to both adult and child

brain tumour patients, together with their families.

We fund brain tumour research in Yorkshire; we hope this research, dedicated to identifying new

approaches to the discovery and treatment of brain tumours, will improve outcomes for patients.

At YBTC we are a small team who are growing to meet the needs of those affected by a brain

About this role

You will be supporting our Employer Engagement team to boost the number of roles we advertise for disabled people. This is an invaluable project for us as we grow our Job Board which offers employment opportunities for disabled people, which we can't do without some amazing volunteers! Please note, you must be 18 years old for this role.

Your role may include:

• Inputting data into our website content management system (Kontent.ai)
• Proof reading job adverts
• Working with the Employer Engagement team to ensure all data is accurate.

Where and when

• This is a fully remote opportunity so can be completed from anywhere in England or Wales
• We can also offer this role as a hybrid opportunity if preferred, if you are based in Manchester.
• We suggest a minimum of 8 hours a week but you're welcome to do more.
• Timing of volunteering is flexible and can be discussed on an individual basis.

About the Charity: Path To Prosper is a UK registered charity that provides professional training to vulnerable young adults in Uganda, enabling them to escape extreme poverty through gaining employable skills. 

Role Overview: The Finance Lead will play a key role in overseeing our financial management, ensuring the charity remains financially sustainable and compliant with all relevant regulations.

You will be responsible for overseeing the financial health of the charity, working closely with the CEO to provide strategic financial advice and support to the Board. You will ensure that our financial operations are transparent, efficient, and compliant with charity law, while reporting to the CEO and Board on key financial matters. You will be entrusted with the responsibility of managing the charity's finances, preparing financial reports, and ensuring that the charity is financially well-positioned to achieve its goals.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Financial administration

   1. Maintain accurate financial records, recording income and expenditure as per agreed categories.

   2. Ensure bank statements match internal financial records.

   3. Process all necessary charity expenses.

   4. Process all invoices received by the charity.

   5. Manage international transfers, and accounts held by international transfer providers. Responsible for transferring funds to agreed providers as per approved budgets and the annual operating plan.

   6. Maintaining charity’s financial signatures as directed by the Treasurer.

2. Financial Oversight:

   1. Lead the charity’s financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes in collaboration with the CEO.

   2. Oversee the financial tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring that funds are used according to the terms set by donors or funders.

   3. Monitor cash flow, ensuring that the charity’s financial position is healthy and sustainable.

   4. Advise the CEO and Board on financial strategies, risks, and opportunities.

3. Financial Planning

   1. To continually research and suggest to the CEO any changes to banking arrangements that would benefit the charities financial position, such as more favourable banking terms, international financial transfers or interest rates.

   2. To support the operations lead with any approved changes to banking arrangements

4. Financial Reporting:

   1. Prepare financial reports for the CEO, including income and expenditure statements, balance sheets, and cash flow forecasts, in line with the organisations agreed income and expenditure categories

   2. Ensure the charity’s financial statements are accurate and comply with accounting standards, charity law, and other relevant regulations. 

   3. Work with external auditors and independent examiners to ensure a smooth annual audit process.

   4. Maintain accurate records and respond to adhoc requests for financial information from the operations team.

5. Compliance and Governance:

   1. Ensure compliance with financial regulations; including the Charity Commission’s requirements and other applicable laws 

   2. File annual returns and financial statements with the Charity Commission in a timely manner.

   3. Advise the CEO and Board on financial governance and risk management.

6. Fundraising and Grant Management:

   1. Support the Fundraising Lead by providing financial insights and reports for grant applications and donor reports.

7. Team Collaboration:

   1. Assist with training or guidance on financial matters where necessary.

Person Specification:

• Essential:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) or substantial relevant experience in financial management.

  • Experience with accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks).

  • Understanding of charity finance; including statutory reporting, VAT, and charity-specific financial regulations.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to analyse and interpret financial data.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.

• Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a trustee or in a senior financial role within a charity.

  • Familiarity with charity fundraising practices and grant management.

RSBC are looking for volunteers to get involved with our range of online clubs for children and young people with visual impairments. 

Role: Online Activities Volunteer

Commitment: Currently, sessions are run both during the week (mostly in the afternoon) and at weekends (usually on a Saturday). What will I be doing?

Our amazing Activity Volunteers play a key role in supporting blind children and young people to take part in a variety of activities. These range from sports, creative (singing, performing, art), audiobook club and day trips. Our activities are designed for blind young people to meet new friends, gain confidence, learn new skills/sports, and become more independent. The skills you have developed in your career and personal life will be invaluable to our young people. 

Key Tasks and Main Duties

• facilitate the communication and social interaction between participants 

• encourage members of the group to participate and share their opinions 

Who are you?

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need to have volunteered or worked before as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow RSBC’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for RSBC. We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of sight problems.
