From elderly moggies to energic kittens, every day across the UK cats and kittens are in need of a temporary place to stay, and lots of love and TLC! We need more fosterers like you to provide a safe, temporary haven for cats and kittens and provide them with everything they need before they get their chance to land on their four paws and make a house a home.

What we need from you 

• A stable, safe and compassionate environment in your home or in a purpose-built pen in your garden provided by us
• Enrich the cats’ experience in care including play, exercise and appropriate handling/interaction
• A willingness to complete some training in order to provide high standards of cat welfare
• Introduce cats to prospective adopters so they can find their forever home

Time expectation

Our volunteer fosterers usually spend around one and a half hours per day (around 10 to 13 hours per week) in this role, but this might vary depending on the number of cats or kittens in care.

This flexible home volunteering role is worthwhile and rewarding. Make a real difference writing letters. As a Volunteer Penpal Writer you’ll be a key member of the Letterbox Team. Your letters will cheer someone up and establish a trusting, supportive relationship with a client who might be lonely or socially isolated.

What tasks can this role include (some or all of the following):

• Writing letters to clients
• Building trust and companionship with a client through correspondence. Omega befriends a variety of people including: caregivers, the lonely, isolated or people with ill-health.
• Liaising with the Letterbox Team by email or post.
• Respecting service standards, appropriate boundaries and recognising the policies and procedures that are necessary when befriending adults at risk.
• Making suggestions to help us improve the service we provide to clients and Volunteer Pen pal Writers.

Citizens Advice Richmond is a local charity that has helped the people of Richmond since 1940. They offer generalist advice on any issue and specialist debt advice. Citizens Advice Richmond is a member of the national Citizens Advice service, a network of around 300 local advice centres.

The role What will you do?

● Complete an introduction for your role.

● Maintain an awareness of how the local Citizens Advice is operating.

● Read papers for board meetings and attend six board meetings per year.

● Work on specific projects with other trustees or staff within the local Citizens Advice to further the strategic objectives of the local Citizens Advice.

● Provide support and assistance to the Chair and the Chief Officer in carrying out their responsibilities, acting as a ‘critical friend’ and sounding board.

● Take on specific responsibilities delegated by the Chair, e.g., supporting new trustees with their induction.

● Carry out the Chair’s duties in their absence, with the acknowledgment of the board as being capable and suitable to do so.

● Be prepared to take over as Chair in the near future.

Do you have 1-3 hours every two months spare to become a Mencap befriender volunteer?

We support a gentleman who would like for somebody to visit him for company and friendship. He enjoys time at home, watching TV, playing board games and baking, but mostly enjoys being outside when the weather is fine. He enjoys taking walks, cycling, bowling and meals out and would love for a friend to spend time and enjoy doing this with him. He would like to meet a volunteer to get to know and eventually enjoy getting out and about.

We offer a lifelong befriending service for adults with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of the people we visit. Visitors visit six times a year to create a 1-2-1 connection, offer companionship, encourage people to do the things they enjoy and check-in on their wellbeing. In many cases, the visitor is the only person in someone’s life who isn’t paid to be there for them.

This is a Stop and stay, let’s get busy visitor role which means the person you will be visiting can communicate actively with you and take part in choosing or planning activities. As you get to know each our you may choose to ‘go out’ either with or without support from the staff that supports the person you visit. Your volunteer manager will be happy to help you with ideas and suggestions for things you can do. Visits will vary in length but tends to be around an hour or longer, depending on what you do.

In this role you will spend quality time with the person you visit and could do a range of different activities like: • Sitting and having a chat • Checking in on their well- being • Going out to a local café/pub for a meal/drink • Enjoying a walk • A craft activity at home • Reading a book/magazine together

Do you have financial oversight and enthusiasm to help an organisation that supports older people across in Berkshire?
You could be the next Treasurer for Age UK Berkshire, a local charity with a nationally trusted name.

With origins in the 1950s, and now a thriving £1m+ charity that works with and for older people across the whole county, Age UK Berkshire is looking for our new Treasurer, to support the Board and CEO in our financial governance for the future.

You won’t be preparing day-to-day financial statements, as these are provided by our outsourced accountancy firm. Rather, you’ll have a strategic oversight of our finances, bringing your analyses and advice to help us to strengthen and grow our services.

In 2023/2024, our total income was £1,736,856, and our Balance Sheet stood at £1,948,760, making all our trustees’ governance of these funds a highly-responsible duty.

The role and what we are looking for in a new Treasurer 

Our Board includes people with experience in working with and for older people, and we’d expect our new Treasurer to have strong empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries. 

You’ll have experience of financial management, possibly in a SME or charity. Having a financial qualification would be very useful but isn’t a requirement; similarly, an understanding of the charity SORP or FRS102 isn’t necessary but would be welcome.

The ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees, is very important. Support from our outsourced accountants will be available, as they produce our management accounts.

You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as full induction will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee including access to external training.

We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We want to expand the diversity of our Board, in all meanings of the word, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups. 

The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees don’t get involved in the organisation’s operations; however, regular contact and liaison with other trustees, employees and volunteers is expected.   

We ask for about six hours per month which includes all meetings, discussions, etc., probably more at year-end and at our AGM. You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business is run that way.
