Our amazing team of vibrant & diverse volunteers helps us run over 600 shops. Our stores sell lots of great donated & new goods to help raise vital funds to make a real difference to disadvantaged children, young people and families across the UK.

Our retail stores are the face of our charity on the high-street and in local communities. We have loads of amazing stock donated to us every week, and this all needs to be sorted, tagged and put on the shop-floor for sale!

Making sure our shops look fantastic is another task you can get involved with. You may also be required to help out on the till too, but we will show you how that works during your time volunteering with us. We value the contribution of everyone who supports Barnardo’s.

You will be a friendly face of Barnardo’s by volunteering in one of our shops. It would be great if you could volunteer one shift a week (or even more if you want) but we’re always happy to be flexible to work around your availability.

All trustees are volunteers, with expenses available for travel to and from meetings and other incidental expenses where applicable. Please note that meetings are currently being held via Zoom.

This flexible home volunteering role is worthwhile and rewarding. Make a real difference writing letters. As a Volunteer Penpal Writer you’ll be a key member of the Letterbox Team. Your letters will cheer someone up and establish a trusting, supportive relationship with a client who might be lonely or socially isolated.

What tasks can this role include (some or all of the following):

• Writing letters to clients
• Building trust and companionship with a client through correspondence. Omega befriends a variety of people including: caregivers, the lonely, isolated or people with ill-health.
• Liaising with the Letterbox Team by email or post.
• Respecting service standards, appropriate boundaries and recognising the policies and procedures that are necessary when befriending adults at risk.
• Making suggestions to help us improve the service we provide to clients and Volunteer Pen pal Writers.

Enter and View Authorised Representative

Enter and view representatives are trained to visit health and care services, to see how services are running in action. They speak with service users and their families, and staff to find out what people think of services. 

As this role involves the provision of health services, all volunteers will have to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

‍Key tasks might include: 

• Preparing for visits to health and social care services by reading background information
• Taking part in visits looking at how the service is provided and talking to staff, relatives and service users about the service
• Working with the team to produce a written report on what was valued at the visit, and where improvements could be made
• Taking part in training sessions relevant to the Enter and View programme
• Contributing to the development of the Enter and View programme

Key Skills and interests for the role: 

• Some knowledge and understanding of health and social care services. This could be through working in a particular service area or a general understanding from experience as a carer or service user
• Commitment to improving the lives of others
• Good communication skills with the ability to work within a team
• Able to talk and listen to people from all walks of life
• Understanding of confidentiality and respecting this at all times
• Good written English skills to help with report writing
• Able to commit at least one to two days every other month

Key tasks

1. Training & Support
   • Conduct training sessions for volunteers on how to use Notion.
   • Develop and maintain training materials (e.g., guides, videos, FAQs) to support ongoing learning.
   • Provide one-on-one or group support to answer Notion-related queries.
2. Workspace Optimisation
   • Help teams structure their Notion workspaces to suit their workflows and case scenarios.
   • Assist in building and refining dashboards, databases, templates, and automations.
   • Provide recommendations on best practices for using Notion efficiently.
3. Permissions & Access Management
   • Set up and manage permissions to ensure appropriate access levels for different roles.
   • Regularly review and update access permissions to maintain security and efficiency.
4. Process Improvement & Documentation
   • Identify opportunities to improve organisational efficiency using Notion.
   • Document standard operating procedures (SOPs) and best practices within Notion.
   • Support teams in integrating Notion with other tools where relevant.
5. Ongoing Support & Troubleshooting
   • Act as the go-to person for troubleshooting Notion-related issues.
