The Microbiology Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. It is one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools.
Our principal goal is to develop, expand and strengthen the networks available to our members so that they can generate new knowledge about microbes and ensure that it is shared with other communities. The impacts from this will drive us towards a world in which the science of microbiology provides maximum benefit to society.
We are looking for a part time Editorial Officer to join our friendly and welcoming team, who are based in Central London (currently working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions). This role will report to the Head of Journal Development and will have responsibility for of the Society’s journal development activities, from conception through to completion, as allocated by the Head of Journal Development.

The Engagement Communications Officer will develop and support all aspects of engagement communications for Spurgeons across the UK, working closely with the Head of Engagement and Spurgeons’ Executive Team. This role will lead internal communications, as well as play an important role working with others to further engage our church partners.
This will involve planning, sourcing, developing and delivering content through a range of channels to help engage our workforce and create a feeling of one team with a clear vision.
Demonstrating the ability to work confidently with senior leaders and other managers, you will have relevant experience of developing and implementing engagement communication plans and approaches, and monitoring the effectiveness of communications on our colleagues as well as key external stakeholders (e.g. chaplains).
Applicants will need excellent writing, editing and proof-reading skills, the ‘journalistic’ ability to source content from colleagues and a familiarity with information technology, especially digital and video means of communication, is essential.
Experience in internal communications, is essential, but experience of writing for a variety of different audiences is also desired.
This is an exciting new role created at a key time as the charity embarks on its future strategy and evolves its culture.

About the role
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team to take responsibility for the operational management of a wide range of education and careers activities for the BOA, including fellowships, courses (virtual and face to face), outreach to medical students/junior doctors, as well as our annual online examination for trainees (UKITE).
You will work closely with our Education and Careers faculty, committee and Policy and Programmes team to lead the delivery of current activity, alongside scoping and developing new projects to promote and support Trauma and Orthopaedics careers.

About you
- Articulate professional of graduate calibre with intellectual acumen and agility
- 5 plus years’ experience in an associated field
- Experience of scoping, options appraisal, planning and implementation of new/updated activities and the ability to take a project from initial idea to implementation
- Experience of managing online exams, through Ripley’s software, or similar.
- Ready to get stuck in and capable of undertaking multiple projects at any one time
- Comfortable with handling multiple issues and flexibility to adapt if priorities change or opportunities emerge at short notice.
- Able to establish good relationships with senior clinicians, expert advisors from the Council and subcommittees, and external stakeholders and organisations.
- Proactive and keen to make a difference while appreciating the importance of sound project management and an eye for detail
- Excellent organisational skills and a proficient communicator (both oral and written).
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to achieve high standards of work with minimal supervision.
- Confident learning and using IT and online systems, including CRMs

About You
You are a digital communications professional with demonstrable, hands-on, experience of working with the Umbraco content management systems; of creating new or updating existing content; have great judgement in dealing with sensitive editorial content alongside strong communications skills; and an ability to provide support and consultancy to a range of stakeholders. You’re experienced in working with external digital agencies; have an understanding of the key components of digital development, testing and delivery; and are able to report clearly on the progress of complex projects.

Working in our Communications and Marketing team, this role requires a candidate with excellent project management skills, who’ll be able to understand complex digital requirements, combined with the confidence and expertise to prioritise to keep projects on schedule and to budget.
Working closely with the Head of Communications and Marketing, colleagues at all levels within the charity and directly with the project manager and developers at our agency, the Digital Communications (CMS) Officer will keep all stakeholders updated on project progress, to help ensure the successful launch of four websites. Additionally, they will ensure all users of the CMS are confident in creating, editing and publishing new content and will create how-to guides for new users.
