Tushinde Children’s Trust, founded in 2010, believes the best place for children to grow up is in their family units. We work in the informal settlements of Mathare and Kiambiu of Nairobi, Kenya. Our targeted programmes and dedicated social workers provide tailored family care and access to education for the poorest families. We help families strengthen and stay together. We provide families with a path from crisis to independence. We support families to help children thrive.

Tushinde is a child-focused organisation and committed to child protection and the protection of vulnerable adults. All shortlisted candidates will be screened prior to joining the board and have background checks that may go beyond contacting referees. Every candidate, regardless of post applied for, will be expected to adhere to the principles of child protection and ensure that those around them do the same.

Tushinde is a UK registered charity, with a board of six trustees. Its programme is delivered through a Kenyan registered NGO of the same name, which has its own independent board of trustees. We are looking for up to three new trustees to join our UK board, to compliment and broaden the skills and knowledge of our existing trustees. 

The Board of trustees meets four times a year and is responsible for ensuring:

• We comply with our governing document and the law

• Act in the charity’s best interest

• Manage the charity’s resources responsibly

• Act with reasonable skill and care

• Ensure we are accountable to our stakeholders

In addition, we focus on:

• Oversight of the Kenyan operations, particularly safeguarding

• Fundraising to support our ongoing programme

• Potential partnership opportunities

• UK charity governance

Beyond the regular board meetings there are plenty of opportunities to support the organisation both in the UK and Kenya. All UK meetings are remote and are typically scheduled at 18:00 UK time.

We are looking for a flexible, committed and reliable individual who has an interest in child welfare in Africa. In addition, we would be particularly interested to hear from individuals with any of the following skills or experience:

• Fundraising, particularly growing or diversifying income streams

• Child welfare, particularly in low or middle income countries

• Risk and charity governance

• And finally, if you have experience of or a connection to Kenya or East Africa even better!

Do you have experience writing grant applications from the National Lottery Community Fund (previously The Big Lottery Fund) Awards for All, Reaching Communities, Partnerships, #iwil Fund, The UK Fund, and the Climate Action Fund in the UK, Heritage Fund and Arts Council? You will be responsible for the overall administration and management support of the Lottery-funded projects and actively contribute to preparing new Lottery project proposals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Proposal Writing

• Mapping of the Lottery Funding
• Conducting research, analysis and documentation.
• Design the Lottery Fund and projects.
• Partnership recruitment for the Lottery funding applications.
• Writing the Lottery fund projects including budgeting, deliverables, and planning.
• Submission of the Lottery Fund project application forms.

Required Skills and Experience

• Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Lottery Fund policy and decisions about health, education, climate change, social issues, human rights, democracy, technology, environment, territorial cooperation etc.
• Responsibility, consistency, and adherence to strict deadlines.
• Proven track record in drafting, writing, and implementing Lottery-funded projects, for at least 2 years experience in writing lottery grant applications.
• Intercultural awareness and sensitivity.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritise and work on own initiative.
• A drive to achieve quality in all aspects of the role

• Fluency in office software, email, web-based applications, and databases.
• Command of social media.

As a Volunteer Communications Officer, you'll be instrumental in executing our communication strategy, ensuring consistent messaging and timely delivery across various channels.

Responsibilities:

Content Management: Utilise tools like Hootsuite to schedule and curate engaging content on our social media platforms, driving visibility and engagement.

Copywriting: Assist in crafting compelling copy for social platforms, aligning messaging with our organisation's mission and values. Assist in crafting our newsletter for health professionals.

Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams to maintain messaging alignment and brand consistency across all communication channels.

Who are we looking for? We are looking for a dedicated and passionate Trustee - Finance Lead, with specific skills and expertise in small charity financial management, who can guide the Irise community through the next phase of our journey. With cuts to funding for girls’ education in the Global South and rising levels of period poverty in the UK, Irise is needed more than ever before and we want to deliver ambitious plans for transformative change, led by the people and communities who need it most.

 As Finance Lead, alongside the Treasurer, you will maintain an overview of the Charity's financial position and of the conduct of its financial affairs such that they can and do give well grounded advice to the Board of Trustees and CEO.

Key Responsibilities

• Actively participate as a key member of the Board of Trustees.
• Support the development of the annual budget and future trajectories in line with the aspirations of the Irise’s strategic plan and fundraising strategy.
• Advise on all financial matters, including regulatory compliance.
• Oversee the development and observation of financial policies.
• Keep the Board of Trustees regularly informed of key financial events, trends, concerns and assessment of fiscal health in addition to completing financial reporting in a timely fashion, making these reports available to the Board within reason.
• Have oversight of all financial transactions including monitoring developed systems for keeping cash flow manageable and efficient.
• Advise fellow Trustees on a regular basis of the financial status of the charity and where necessary recommend action.
• Arrange the compilation and agreement of Irise’s annual report, including the annual review of accounts by the independent examiner.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have sound financial knowledge and the time needed to comprehensively fulfil the role:

• Competent and experienced in handling finances, ideally within small charities (formal accountancy qualification preferred).
• Good understanding of the charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP)
• An understanding of the voluntary sector and previous experience as a Trustee

In addition, all trustees are required to fulfill the following duties as outlined by the Charity Commission. 

Before you apply, please consider:

Time Commitment: The Board meet at least every 3 months. All of our core Board meetings are held virtually on weekday evenings lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Board papers are circulated 1-week prior to each meeting to enable plenty of time to read through and ask questions prior to the meeting. In between Board meetings you may be invited to provide additional ad-hoc input such as providing insights via email or taking responsibility for researching and writing Board papers on particular issues. We also have 1-2 in-person meetings per year; where possible, we strive for hybrid access to enable inclusion of those people unable to attend in-person events. Trustees are also encouraged to participate in online and in-person events with our wider networks and supporters from the UK and East Africa, and to support our youth leadership initiatives, for example we ask one of our trustees to provide mentorship to our Empower Period Committee. In total, you can expect to spend an average of 1-2 hours per week on activities and meetings related to the role. The role is meant to be compatible with a full time job and caring responsibilities, and we always aim for trustee input to be as flexible and time efficient as possible. We are always open to new ideas to make our Board as accessible as possible.

Term: Trustees serve a mutually agreed term, usually of at least 3 years, as agreed by the trustee and the board depending on the needs and desires of the organisation and the individual trustee. As a Board we engage in a continuous cycle of reflection, and each year our Chair meets with each board member, one to one, to review and reflect.

Expenses: Trustees shall be reimbursed whenever possible for all reasonable traveling, subsistence and other expenses incurred in connection with their attendance at meetings or in carrying out any other duties or responsibilities of the role, but otherwise shall not be paid a remuneration.
