Trustee Opportunity – can you enrich our existing board of trustee volunteers in a rewarding role?

James Hirons is a registered dynamic charity focusing on providing exceptional care to our residents and their families to 'Make everyday a day worth living".  We are currently rated “good” following assessment by the Care Quality Commission.

We are looking for at least two trustees; ideally one with a legal background and one with a marketing background.  Other interested parties with different skills and knowledge are most welcome. 

James Hirons is a small but well-funded independent care home based in a pleasant area of Leamington Spa. We have been providing quality care since 1953. The Trustee team provide essential support to the Management and staff of the Home and this opportunity offers a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

All applications must meet the requirements of trustees in line with the Charity Commission requirements, and a full and detailed induction and training will be provided.

Key responsibilities 

• To play a key role in the strategic vision and direction of our charity.
• To understand legal and financial responsibilities of board members.
• To act as an enthusiastic and positive ambassador for the Home, advocating on our behalf and representing us within the local community.
• To proactively support our commitment to equality.
• To attend board meetings (normally 6 per year, held on a weekday morning) and take part in sub-committees as appropriate.
• To support, and in some cases lead, relationships with key stakeholders and partners and build network on behalf on the charity.

Person specification

• Be an effective communicator and able to work constructively in a small team.
• Have a commitment to caring, quality of care and services. 
• A knowledge and/or an understanding of what it means to be a trustee (training will be given to those who have not been on a board of trustees before)
• Experience on, or working closely with, boards or committees, is useful but not essential.

DIY Skills Advisers (DIYSA) Volunteer 

If you’re looking for a varied, hands-on volunteering role that makes a difference in people’s lives while supporting clients to learn new skills, then look no further than this exciting role. 

Shelter’s DIY Skills Advisers (DIYSA) help people to gain fundamental DIY skills to build a positive future in their homes after a prolonged period of homelessness, turning a house into a home. They also help people to improve and maintain their homes, often preventing eviction. Referrals to the DIYSA service can be received from both Shelter colleagues and support staff from local partner organisations. 

The DIYSA team works with individuals, sharing their skills to enable them to participate in home improvements, teaching them how to paint, wallpaper, build flat-pack furniture and gardening. As well as support for individuals, the DIY Skills Advisers run workshops across the country to bring communities together and upskill those who attend, providing clients with energy saving advice, educating them around cutting costs and improving energy efficiency in the home. 

This role is an opportunity to make a real difference to the households we assist. You’ll be developing your own knowledge and skills to assist local people and households with a range of housing disrepairs and challenges as well as providing practical DIY guidance You will gain experience of volunteering within a recognised national housing charity, while supporting your local community. 

Suggested Involvement: The role is flexible, however due to the nature of the role, requires you to be available for the day, in accordance with the DIYSA’s diary. 

Availability: This volunteering opportunity will take place within our working hours, Monday-Friday, 9am – 5pm 

Location: Shelter Birmingham, 38 The Priory Queensway, Birmingham, B4 7LA, however this is a community-based role, visiting people in their own homes in and around Birmingham so travelling will be required.

As a DIYSA Volunteer, you’ll be supporting the day-to-day work of DIYSA as they provide advice, guidance and skills to households in Birmingham.

Main Tasks include 

• Working alongside the DIYSA to provide DIY repairs, teach households DIY skills,

• Accompany the DIYSA, visiting people at their homes, and assessing the repair/skill need 

• Painting and decorating 

• Gardening work 

• Flat pack furniture assembly 

• Fitting curtain rails and blinds 

• Hanging pictures and shelves 

• Supporting the DIYSA with the delivery of community-based workshops in skills such as drills workshops, gardening, energy saving practices and help around the management of mould. 

Skills and experience required 

• Your main role is to support the DIYSA and help them complete jobs in a timely and effective manner 

• You don’t need to have a background in DIY for this role. We are looking for a willing learner who has excellent communication and listening skills

• An interest in supporting and motivating people to make positive changes in their lives through acquiring new skills and interests

• A strong team player who can take on instructions to complete jobs to a high standard 

• Enjoys working with others and contribute to delivering an excellent service 

• Ability to connect with clients and contribute to the community 

• Willingness to follow Shelter’s policies, including volunteering, health & safety, equality & diversity, confidentiality & data protection

Retail & Furniture Assembly Volunteers  - A New Volunteer Opportunity in Acorns Children's Hospice Superstore in Pershore 

Acorns have a network of shops across the West Midlands that generate a substantial level of income to enable us to care for children and their families. 

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Pershore Superstore. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between. The store is open - Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. 

What does volunteering involve?

Shop Volunteer

Furniture Assembly Volunteer

• Building and dismantling flat pack furniture

The Children's Book Project is a national charity on a mission to tackle book poverty. We passionately believe that every child should have the opportunity to own a book and have, in the last year, celebrated gifting our 1 millionth book! We are looking for some wonderful volunteers to help us in managing book sorting and packing with a range of amazing corporate volunteers at our three HQs in Birmingham, Leeds and London.

We gift beautiful pre-loved and new books to schools and we gift within prison settings in order to reach children who may not otherwise have access to book ownership.

We are looking for volunteers in Birmingham, Leeds and London able to help us in the running of our book sorting days at each of our three HQs.  Ideally you will be able to commit to 2-3 days per half term.  (We work term-times only).  Our hours are 10am - 2:30pm.

We work with a range of amazing corporate volunteer teams who come to organise, sort and then pack our books in preparation for delivery. These corporate days are always full of energy and fun and we are looking for energetic and passionate people to support these events as Volunteer Coordinators - helping to make sure that there is a warm welcome, a clear plan for the day and that our one-off visitors can contribute productively.

Ignite Youth Future (IYF) addresses Tanzania’s high youth unemployment by equipping A-Level students, university students, and recent graduates with essential skills to navigate the job market. Many young people struggle with career uncertainty, lack of professional networks, and limited access to mentorship. IYF tackles these challenges through career exploration workshops, résumé writing training, soft skills development, and networking opportunities. Additionally, we promote mental and physical well-being to ensure holistic growth. By bridging the gap between education and employment, IYF empowers youth with the tools and connections needed for sustainable careers, ultimately fostering economic resilience and reducing unemployment rates.

IYF tackles youth unemployment by providing career readiness training, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Resource Mobilisation Officer

BloodForce

We work in Ghana to eliminate the burden of blood acquisition on providers and patients in crisis by leveraging technology to galvanize the public to increase Ghana’s Blood Collection Index to greater than 10 by 2030, because no patient in crisis should die from unavailability of blood products.

Ghana at 5.6 per 1000 population, is significantly behind WHO minimum standard [10 per 1,000 population] required to meet a country’s basic transfusion needs. As a result, restrictive blood disbursement policies have resulted in delayed care for critical patients in Ghana and in many cases, avoidable deaths.

We believe that public communities can be mobilized to close gaps in health care delivery, particularly in developing countries. BloodForce plans to build an online blood donor community that can reliably and meaningfully increase blood donation rates in Ghana while helping patients and families navigate their blood product health crises. This community will also serve as a platform for advocacy and education, strengthening transfusion services across the country.

Willow seeks to appoint a new Board member as part of our succession planning. We are keen to hear from candidates who have skills or expertise in fundraising:

• Worked as a senior fundraiser in a charity with a range of public fundraising methods, and are used to setting targets and reviewing the effectiveness of different streams of income.  At Willow, you will help to scrutinise and enhance our fundraising strategy and may have experience of data insight and interrogation

You will be joining a dedicated team of Trustees. We currently have 10 board members with a variety of backgrounds and experience including finance, investments, fundraising, PR and communications, management consultancy, events, and legal.  Our trustees work closely with the Chief Executive, leadership team and senior members of the team.

The Bike Project’s mission is simple – we refurbish unwanted bikes and donate them to refugees and people seeking asylum, giving them freedom and independence whilst they rebuild their lives.

Most people seeking asylum are banned from working and many are forced to live off an allowance of £8.86 per day and those lucky enough to get refugee status still face high unemployment and isolation. Having a bike links people to essential services, including foodbanks and legal advice, as well as the local community.

The Bike Project has proved that a bike can make a difference. Not only is a bike a practical tool for tackling poverty, those who receive bikes from us report they are more connected in their community, happier and healthier as a result.

Alongside our core Bike Donations Programme, we support refugee women to learn to cycle through our Pedal Power Programme; provide ongoing support with bike maintenance through our Repair or Replace Programme; and offer the opportunity for connection and friendship through our volunteer-matching Bike Buddy Programme.

A number of trustees, including our treasurer, are coming to the end of their terms later this year and as such we are looking for a new treasurer and other trustees to join this dynamic group. 

You will be joining a highly committed group of trustees who give their time, expertise and contacts to support the charity. Our trustees are critical in enabling us to thrive. You will work together with your fellow trustees and the wider staff team to set our strategic direction and improve our work with refugees. • Basic IT skills to use Cats Protection systems - training and support can be provided
• Committee volunteers need to be aged 18+

Time expectation

Our fundraising team leaders usually spend three to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.
